Joyce Winters is the designing force behind the Beverly Hills-based handbag line JJ Winters. With her trademark fringe and other boho-chic touches, she has quickly attracted a long list of upper-crust Hollywood clientele. This slouchy suede shoulder bag has been seen on the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale, and Paris Hilton.

But it isn’t the list of starlets carrying the bag that really makes it interesting. It combines retro design in the form of fringed and braided suede with an updated color palette that includes plum and camel. The slouchy suede exterior with its multilayered fringe look appeals to hippie chicks and rockers alike.

I love the combination of the generous 11″ x 16″ inch size and the super skinny, super long, braided suede 36″ strap. But, I am dubious about how comfortable that lovely little strap might be if it were full to capacity. So, you might have to rethink stuffing this bag to its brim if you’re in for a long day.

This large slouchy shape is very now, as is the eye-popping color. And, while I can definitely see this shoulder bag working with a lot of different trendy outfits, it may not work as an everyday bag for a more conservative woman. Purple fringe just might not be what some people consider office attire. That being said, the JJ Winters suede fringe bag is the perfect punctuation for many of today’s hottest looks.

I have to admit that I don’t think first of handbags when I hear the name Jimmy Choo. Like many other lovers of fashion, the designer’s name probably evokes images of strappy sandals and other fabulous shoes we drooled over on Sex and the City. However, Jimmy Choo has created many handbags that have become celebrity favorites right alongside his famous footwear.

One of the purses that has often been seen in photographs of celebrities is the Marin oversized clutch. Fans of the bag vary from classic Victoria Beckham to pop princess Hilary Duff. Because of the popularity of the recent oversized handbag trend, the Marin has quickly become a highly demanded bag inspiring Jimmy Choo to release it in a variety of colors and patterns.

Despite an abundance of options, the black leather with brushed brass hardware is my favorite. It just seems so classy in the basic color. There’s nothing overdone or fussy about it. This decently sized clutch will fit a lot and look great with so many outfits.

For storage, the Marin has a zippered compartment on the lower exterior of the bag as well as an interior zippered pocket. The top zips and folds over to create the clutch silhouette. If you’d rather not lug it around in your hands, a detachable wrist strap offers another option for carrying. A pretty brass ring adds some detail to the top and an embossed plaque displays the Jimmy Choo logo on the front.

The Marin is a tad expensive, in my opinion, for a clutch bag as it retails for $1250. However, this Jimmy Choo version of the typically impractical type of bag is at least large enough to wear everyday. You might be paying a little more, but you’ll probably get your money’s worth of use with this one.

Fringed purses are so hot, but I find the fashion a little hit and miss. We’ve all seen those handbags with an all-over fringe which look more like animals than accessories. The Botkier Morgan is one fringe purse which gets it right, proving that old adage that less is more.

The fringe details complement the buttery soft leather, giving this hobo a real Southwestern charm. The fringing is definitely the feature, but there’s plenty more to get excited about. The inverted pleat gives this purse a rich fullness, while the zippered front flap adds functionality and style.

The Morgan has a stylish slim profile, but a long zipper around the edge of the purse can change all that in an instant. When you need to overstuff just undo this zip for so much extra storage room. This practical touch is complemented by an organizational zip pocket inside.

With all that storage room on offer, it’s unfortunate that the single strap is so short. With a drop of only 4 inches, it’s really only appropriate for handheld carrying. The soft leather will feel great in your palm, but only if you remember to travel light!

Leave it to Fendi to make orangish-red look classic. Though it isn’t one of the warm colors we’ve been seeing this season, the bright Mini Mama is sure to make any outfit pop.

The patent leather that seems to be a recurring trend right now looks stunning on this little Fendi number. The fashion child of the popular Fendi Mama from the past, the Mini Mama is smaller than its parent purse but equally stylish.

It can’t be called practical due to its small size, and it certainly shouldn’t be an everyday purse. However, this Fendi would be great for special occasions where you need a little something to spice up a simple outfit. Be careful what colors you wear with it, though. A bright tone like this one needs a basic color palette to accompany it. This handbag should be the showcase of your ensemble and doesn’t need to compete with anything else you’ve got on.

The red is complemented by the gold hardware on the chunky chain shoulder strap and on the Fendi interlocking “F” that adorns the front flap. The wide base of the baguette-shaped purse is convenient for the times you, unfortunately, will have to set it down. Look for the Fendi logo stitched on the interior lining.

If the blend of tangerine and crimson isn’t for you, don’t disregard the Mini Mama. For those who prefer more traditional handbags, this one is also available in black or brown in Fendi’s signature Zucchino fabric featuring the Fendi logo. The patent leather Mini Mama retails for $805.

Nothing is more classically feminine than the Lady Dior line by Christian Dior. And while the Lady Dior bags may not stand on fashion’s cutting edge, they do have a hundred years of couture tradition behind their conservative good looks.

The Cannage bag takes its name from the quilted pattern in the patent leather, called “cannage stitching”, a Dior trademark. The tonal matte stitches show off the glossiness of the patent leather, and the intricate cannage pattern has a look that is both classic and contemporary.

The shiny, oversized silver hardware really pops against the backdrop of black patent, and the Dior logo charms are an eye-catching, but classy, alternative to a prominent logo. The rolled leather handles have a 4.25″ drop, comfortable for carrying by hand, but probably too short for most of us to fit over a shoulder. But, apparently, Christian Dior thought of that, too, and included a long, removable shoulder strap.

The high attention to detail is exactly what you should expect from the established House of Dior. The stitching is even and intricate, and all the hardware is polished to a glassy shine. Protective metal feet on the bottom of the bag keep your investment safe from scuffs and scratches. Even the interior has trademark Dior quality, with its jacquard logo lining.

The Cannage comes in several sizes, including an adorable mini-version favored by Hollywood burlesque starlet Dita Von Teese. And, Blair Waldorf, the preppy Upper East Side teen socialite on Gossip Girl, has been spotted toting this 9.8″ x 4.3″ x 8.3″ version on some of the most recent winter episodes. All said, you really can’t do better than a bag that the “Queen B” and the “Queen of Burlesque” can agree on.

In comparison to the bold Choose Juicy bag, the Flagship Shoulder Bag is quite tame. If we’re talking about your basic black handbag, however, it has a little something extra. Without the often-seen Juicy Couture logo taking over the bag, the Flagship seems more grown-up than some of Juicy’s other options but still stands out in its own category.

If it didn’t have any bells or whistles, this shoulder bag would just be a nice, slouchy handbag. For women who want more than an average purse, though, the Flagship has some interesting details and textures that combine to create a unique look. The distressed, glazed leather has a rugged quality that evokes a slight rocker vibe.

It’s not for someone who wants a simple bag, though. A grosgrain ribbon drawstring weaves through grommets around the top of the purse and comes to a bow that lays across one side of the bag. A contrasting vertical band runs from the back to the front creating the flap lock closure. It couldn’t be less simple. In the words of the fashionable judges on Project Runway, it seems a bit overworked. I don’t dislike the details, but they seem somewhat fussy when combined on the handbag.

However, if you love grommets and distressed leather, the Flagship Shoulder Bag is probably a great choice for a basic black bag. The gold-toned hardware adds elegance and displays the signature Juicy Couture logo and emblem. This leather handbag retails for $395.

London designer Zufi Alexander only launched her eponymous accessories line in 2004, but she is quickly racking up an fan base of A-list celebs. Katherine Heigl has be seen carrying a number of Zufi bags (including the Y clutch) and Alicia Keys carried her hot pink version of the Y to the World Music Awards in November. So, while Zufi Alexander may be new to the designer scene, she is quickly working her way to the top.

Unusual combinations of materials mixed with immaculate and innovative details characterize Zufi Alexander’s line of handbags and shoes. The Y clutch in eel skin fits well into the line, with its eye-catching bright color and smoothly textured eel skin. The long rectangular shape emphasizes the subtle vertical striping of the leather. I love the simple shape of the clutch, because it lets the natural beauty of the eel skin and the unnaturally beautiful color shine through.

The only thing I don’t love about the look of the Y clutch is the large, logo-embossed hardware plate on the front. The brushed silver hardware sets off the color and texture of the bag, but the crowded logo and framing on the plate make it an overdesigned distraction on such a small bag. The Y eel skin clutch retails for about $1000, and will be available in the US early in 2009.
