Here’s a high-priced, kitschy bag for the upcoming holiday season. It’s an over indulgent handbag from Louis Vuitton.

Priced just shy of $2000, the Galliera Riviera, named after the French Riviera (how snobbishly appropriate), is a canvas hobo-style bag that features a rather vibrant illustration of the famed French resort locale, an adjustable leather shoulder strap and an open top with magnetic closure.

A plus for this special collection design is the large 20 x 13.5 x 8 size, yet its’ generous dimensions cannot make up for what amounts to a very pricey, one-trick-pony of a bag. Still, if you collect LV and have the extra cash to spend, I suppose it’ll make a rather cute, attention-grabbing day bag. Just restrict its’ use to a cruise ship or the French Riviera itself.

Rampage combined the slouchy profile of a casual purse with a contemporary checkered design to create the Thompson, a surprisingly versatile shoulder bag.

The chic gray and black geometric print reminds me of something we’d see in Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B collection. But unlike the L.A.M.B purses, the Thompson isn’t priced in triple figures. You can pick up this affordable purse for just $88 retail.

So what’s the catch? Well, you won’t get genuine patent leather trim or real silver hardware for this price. But eco-conscious girls won’t mind too much, as this shoulder bag is made entirely of animal-friendly products. From the slouchy fabric exterior to the glossy manmade trim, the effect is easy on the budget and the eye.

The generous interior is lined with a confetti-print satiny fabric which seems to celebrate all the space on offer. While it doesn’t skimp on storage room the organizational features are a little lacking. The zippered wall pocket is perfect for loose change and lipsticks, but I’d love some slip pockets for my cell phone and PDA.

The Thompson has the contemporary styling and space modern girls crave, with a price that’s entirely appropriate for these tough economic times.

Some of our favorite luxury bag designers turned their creative hands to Christmas trees recently, all in the name of charity. Around 44 designer Christmas trees were auctioned off at the Les Sapins de Noel des Createurs charity auction in Paris.

The chic trees included this golden beauty crafted with hundreds of LV emblems by none other than Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney’s eco-friendly tree created from cardboard tiers, and Jerome Dreyfuss’ unique umbrella and plastic bag design!

But the biggest seller of the night was a tree by Zaha Hadid, the British Iraqi architect who designed the recent Chanel Pavilion in Central Park. Her unusual tree, made of a white column of circling shapes, fetched €46, 000.

A total of €101, 000 was raised on the night for the Sol En Si organization, a group which assists children and families living with AIDS. Some of the proceeds will be used to create a residence in Togo for AIDS orphans. However, as the funds raised were three times the expected amount, organizers can do much more than that.

With a burst of beaded sunshine comes the Rafe Camilla tote bag, a purse that has us longing for warmer weather.

Just try to take your eyes off that playful beaded starbust. The combination of large white beads and smaller round silver ones is headturning without being too fussy. The pattern sits on bold colored fabric, available in basic black, sunny lemon yellow, and hot pink. The durable material is offset with white leather trim which completes this playful look.

A magnetic closure opens to reveal a spacious interior lined with fun striped twill fabric. The boxy rectangular shape offers easy access and ample storage room. There isn’t a lot in the way of organizational features, but the zippered side wall pocket will come in handy.

It’s very cute, but for $295 retail this Rafe tote might just be too casual for some fashion lovers. If versatility is what you’re after, you won’t find it here. But if you’re looking for a playful purse to tote to beach in summer, or to add a little sunshine to your casual wardrobe all year round, the Camilla might fit the bill.

Marc Jacobs seems to enjoy his offbeat reputation. His handbags are sometimes exemplary of his desire to stand out among a crowd of designers. However, the extremely popular designer always manages to create bags that appeal across the board to many personalities.

Though he is well-known for simple, fashionable bags like the Stam, it is in his younger brand Marc by Marc Jacobs that the designer usually displays his edgier designs. The Jelly Jacquard Groovee Satchel is one example of how the designer combines quirky and classic for a look that can only belong to him. Like the L.A.M.B. tie dye bag, it somehow ends up looking completely fabulous.

Though the version of the Jelly satchel in indigo canvas with lime green leather handles and trim is a bit over the top for my personal taste, I sincerely like the handbag in the talc color option as shown here. It looks classic at first glance but reveals some different qualities upon further inspection.

Case in point: the subtle, patterned material that initially looks abstract but is really a massive display of the brand name. The name Marc by Marc Jacobs scrolls horizontally across the entirety of the bag leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind from whence it came. I love the mod style of the letter font. It lends a slightly retro air to the Groovee.

The faux-buckled leather straps that encircle the bag break up the patterned, coated canvas. For an extra touch, the signature twist-lock closure appears on the front of the handbag with a padlock charm hanging from it. However, this common Marc by Marc Jacobs detail is only decorative not functional. Whether you prefer it in subtle gray and cream or in funky indigo and lime, the Jelly Jacquard Groovee is anything but ordinary. This satchel retails for $398.

The economic crisis has claimed another victim: the proposed Louis Vuitton store in Japan.

Plans to open an LV store in Japan’s famous Ginza shopping district are now on hold. The store was slated to be the biggest Louis Vuitton store in the world, with 12 floors spanning 12, 000 square meters.

Japan is considered the French fashion label’s most lucrative market, with one third of young women in the country owning a Louis Vuitton bag or item of clothing. But due to the credit crunch, most people are curbing the purchase of such luxury goods.

The decision to stall the store’s opening is thought to be the latest indicator Japan is heading for its worst recession since the Second World War. You know that times are tough when Louis Vuitton’s staunchest supporters can no longer afford their glamorous goods!

Hopefully once the global economy turns around the store will go ahead as big and beautiful as planned!
