Phillip Lim’s signature minimalism sure went out the window on this one. If he proved his versatility with the Doctor’s Bag, it just looks like he has something to prove with the Gwen, which makes all the standard mistakes typical of overworking: too many colors, too many textures, and too many styles, all badly coordinated.

The shape is simple enough, and the main color of the satchel is a lovely metallic bronze. If that was where the description of the bag ended, it would seem more in keeping with Lim’s classic, pared-down style. But, unfortunately, the front and back of the satchel is overlayed with a crinkled patent patchwork of red, purple, black, and tan. I love the combination of colors, and if there weren’t so many of them, or if there weren’t so much else going on, they just might work.

To add to the overdecorated exterior, there is contrast overstitching, which, I think, contributes to the bags overdesign and looks downright cheap on a handbag made of beautiful, high-quality leathers. On a simpler bag, the gold and black hardware detail on the handles would pack a stylish wallop, but on the Gwen, it is lost in the fray.

The 12.25″ x 7.5″ x 6.5″ size makes it a great medium-sized everyday bag, with enough room for your organizer, wallet, and cosmetic essentials, but not so big that it becomes too heavy to carry when filled. For a woman truly in love with the patchwork trend, the Gwen might be a great designer choice at under $600.

Like always, Mulberry has stuck to its apparent philosophy of clean lines and classic shapes with the Mabel satchel. The popular brand, which is based in London, has been toted by many celebrities including Naomi Watts, Sienna Miller, and Kate Moss. Naomi Watts particularly seems to be taken with her Mabel bag as she has been photographed with it multiple times, but it’s not hard to see why she’s fond of it.

The leather satchel comes in two sizes, small and large, offering shoppers two options for using the handbag. Both come with two exterior zippered pockets and large slip pockets on the front and back. This Mulberry bag also has a buckled front closure.

The small Mabel is perfect for daily use and easy, quick storage of items. The larger version of the Mabel, shown here, is significant in size and seems more appropriate for an overnight bag, unless you’re a fan of the oversized trend for everyday. The detachable luggage tag might be a clue to its best purpose.

Some women might choose to use it everyday, though. Though convenient for a long day, the oversized trend looks a tad ridiculous to me when not proportionate to the size of the woman carrying the bag. However, I do understand the appeal of having everything you need in one satchel. Perhaps the rule of thumb should be to limit yourself to one oversized item per outfit. Don’t pair a huge bag like the large Mabel with a knee-length sweater and sunglasses the size of California. Someone should tell Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

That being said, every woman should have a large satchel in her wardrobe for when the occasion calls for it. With the variety of colors and textures offered, the Mabel is a great choice. This multi-functional Mulberry comes in soft leather, patent leather, and leopard-printed calf hair. The ocean blue of this leather version looks stunning but it just one of many colors available. The large Mabel retails for $1195.

JJ Winters brings us another bag that is beloved by celebrities, but also affordably priced for us regular types. The blue hue is a bright as the sunny California sky on Rodeo Drive, where it has been seen on the likes of Beverly Hills celebutantes like Tori Spelling.

The large size makes it perfect for shopping or running errands in style. The open top makes the tote easy to get in and out of, which can be a major plus if you have a lot of errands to run, but a problem if safety is an issue. The flap strap top closes with a turnlock, which increases the safety factor somewhat, but won’t keep things from sliding out the open sides.

The crocodile-embossed leather has an gorgeously intricate pattern, and a subtle glossy sheen. I love the way the gold hardware adds a little bit more bling to this already bright bag, and the way the bold black and white printed interior adds yet another posh touch. But, since the croc is faux, all this luxury comes at a price below $400, which is not bad for a crocodile bag big enough to hold a small load of laundry.

All said, the JJ Winters Croco bag isn’t the best choice for carrying around your valuables, but it would be an extremely chic accessory for a day at the beach or a trip to the farmer’s market.

Large handbags are so hot right now, but this is one fashion fad you’ve got to be careful with. We all love those spacious interiors, but far too often these bulky bags can make you look a little frumpy. All too often big bags aren’t equipped with the organizational features girls really need. One side wall has a zippered pocket, while the other has some slip pouches to hold your cell phone and other accessories.

The District Tote is available in two chic looks. The metallic stripes of the bronze bag are glamorous without being too gaudy. However I prefer this glossy azure bag, which seems a little more appropriate for daytime carrying.

It’s got the look, it’s got the features, and remarkably the District Tote has the perfect price tag. This stylish genuine leather tote is a bargain at just $88.

A framed satchel is always a stylish look. The structured shape is a great canvas for fun prints and accessories. B. Makowsky has combined these elements to create the Oslo Dome Satchel. The Oslo is available in solid-colored leather in hues like terracotta, olive, brandy, and smoke. However, the zebra option practically begs for a review.

The classic silhouette renders images of old Hollywood stars like Grace Kelly, but the vintage vibe is contrasted with the funky print and shiny metal accents. Though most of the Oslo handbags come in soft leather, the zebra is made from polyester faux calf hair. I’m not generally a fan of animal prints, and this isn’t one of the best I’ve seen. However, at least it is somewhat subtle in brown and black and not as loud as typical black-and-white zebra print.   

That being said, the animal-printed Oslo is not a traditional handbag. The silver rings that attach the leather handles to the large satchel and the silver metal plates on the corners give this B. Makowsky a decidedly modern flair. Decorative buckles running down each side add to the interesting details.

Zebra print fits a very specific taste and might not appeal to you. However, don’t let it form your opinion of the Oslo. Be sure to look at all of the other color options before deciding what to think about this one. The maize and smoke colors, in particular, look stunning. The large Oslo Dome Satchel retails for $298.

The economic crisis has claimed a new fashion victim.
