Although these options are $50 less, the solid-colored leather, in my opinion, is worth the extra cash since patterned fabric can be somewhat limiting.

Like most shoppers, the Penelope provides ample storage when necessity calls for it. Interior and exterior pockets will keep you organized. Buckles and drawstrings seem to be big with handbag designers in recent collections. When I first saw this Michael Kors Desert satchel, I immediately thought of the Elliot Lucca Estella bag. The shapes are somewhat similar, but the front details are almost identical.

However, the overall style of the two purses couldn’t be more different. While the Estella is flashy with its metallic leather and bold hardware, the Desert bag is much more subtle. For everyday, I prefer the Michael Kors satchel with its casual, brown washed leather and tan stitching.

There’s a time and place for shiny, silver purses, but the Desert is great for toning things down and blending into a wardrobe. You could pair it with nearly any informal outfit you’ve got, which makes it a wise investment. Versatility is definitely something to consider when making accessories purchases these days. Although the Elliot Lucca bag is over $100 less, the Desert satchel’s price tag of $398 doesn’t seem too bad when you think of how often you’ll be able to use it.

The exterior flap pockets aren’t just for looks, but the buckled details are. Their snap closures make them easier to access than real buckled pockets. The drawstring is functional, but really just adds to the style of the bag as the interior magnetic snap is much less cumbersome. Gold-toned hardware brings a hint of shine to this large Michael Kors handbag. If you’re looking for something a little more funky, the Desert also comes in an embossed python tote.

The $1395 retail price is a little high, but not completely unreasonable for a handbag of this style and quality. But if you can afford it, make sure you handle the Ayler Rio with care. With no protective feet on the base, that soft nude leather is bound to show stains and scuffs.

Indie actor and musician Michael Pitt is trading in his grubby jeans and tees for a little Yves Saint Laurent. Michael is the star of a short film produced by the luxury fashion label. It will screen at the launch of Stefano Pilati’s new collection in Paris this week.
