You’ve got to love an advertising campaign that knows who its real stars are. Iceberg Jeans may have enlisted the supermodel talents of Amber Valletta for this fashion photo, but this colorful satchel takes center stage.

Other photos do feature Amber’s lovely face, but the harsh lighting and shadows mean the model plays second fiddle to the clothes and accessories.

It’s a unique approach taken by fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, but I’m not sure this collection has the style to really pull it off. This bag’s bold fuchsia and green floral print and the daring metallic purple trim is obviously inspired by the 1980s. The vibrant design should give this purse a fun retro vibe, but the execution just seems a little messy to me.

I’ll try to reserve my judgment until I see the rest of the spring/summer 2009 collection, but perhaps Iceberg Jeans should have allowed Amber to take the focus away from these accessories!

Nothing makes a handbag a hit faster than a little celebrity support. Versace got it when Jessica Alba and Eva Mendez were spotted carrying the gorgeous Hit bag. That confident moniker probably didn’t hurt the purse’s popularity either!

The star appeal might turn your head, but the handbag’s high quality finish will capture your heart. It’s made from glazed grained leather trimmed with patent for a little extra shine. The hexagonal shape is so eye-catching, and unlike many unique purse designs it doesn’t compromise storage space. But I could have done without the polished silver nameplate, which doesn’t seem to really mesh with the Hit tote’s earthy tones. Yet I know so many fashionistas love to flaunt their name-brand bags, and it does that without appearing too flashy.

Two exterior zip pockets don’t provide a lot of storage room, but they are a convenient place for storing the goodies you want on hand.  The interior is much more practical with its large zippered pocket, roomy slip pocket, and handy cell phone pouch. The sides zip up for a little security, while the open top offers easy access to your mobile when it starts to ring.

The structured handles look chic, but I can’t imagine they’re too comfortable when your Hit bag is full. A tote of this size is so easy to overload, and those short handles are just another example of Versace sacrificing practicality for good looks. Of course the label gets those looks so right, so for all its flaws the Hit bag is still hard to resist.

When February is right around the corner, red and white accessories seem to pop up everywhere just in time for Valentine’s Day. The first thing I have to say about this clutch is: are you kidding me? It’s perfect. Every little black dress would benefit from the addition of this sophisticated snakeskin accessory. And, can you imagine it with tight black jeans and sky high stilettos? The magnetic pull of this bag is almost more than I can handle. It’s got all the rock-n-roll appeal of python plus the sleek sophistication of a streamlined design.

You might be thinking, “Yeah, but it’s just a plain old envelope clutch.” Sure, but the simplicity of the shape showcases the gorgeous details of the python leather. All the natural variations in color and texture that are the trademark of fine exotics really shine through. The top flap fastens with a hidden magnetic closure that opens to a beautiful suede and leather-lined interior. 

I also love the design for how flat it is. I know, it might not be the most practical item for stowing anything too big, but it fits so nicely tucked under your arm or held in your hand. How much stuff do you need on a night out with this bag anyways? Gloss and keys, and you’re on way.

The fashion world is abuzz with rumors that Olivier Theyskens has officially left Nina Ricci. These whispers have been around for more than a month, but with Grazia reporting the news they seem to be gaining a little credibility.

Just two weeks ago the designer and the label’s management reiterated their commitment to one another, even going so far as to expand the accessories line. But word has it that Nina Ricci’s spring 2009 collection is failing to sell, and Olivier still remains unconcerned about the fashion house’s bottom line.

This fundamental difference in approach has fueled speculation of a rift. Olivier is known for valuing expensive craftsmanship and creative vision above all else. It’s an admirable goal, but one that isn’t exactly practical in the current economic climate. Let’s not forget this high-spending approach was part of the reason he was let go from Rochas in 2006.

Nina Ricci has not confirmed the departure at this stage, but it might explain why the label’s owner Mario Grauso recently met with Louis Vuitton talent Peter Copping. I guess until that official announcement is made we’ll just have to speculate!

Treesje has given a little edge to the floaty, feminine boho style with its Audrey hobo handbag.

Most of us are familiar with Rebecca Minkoff because of the ever-so-popular Morning After Bag (a.k.a. MAB) and the famous Market Tote from the Sex and the City movie. The list of this popular bag designer’s celebrity fans is long and continually growing. Her classic styles combined with interesting details make for some of the best everyday or showcase handbags.

One of the recent additions to the Rebecca Minkoff family is the Devote bag. It is yet another large purse in an already crowded oversized handbag world. However, I do love this new tote for its traditional look with a twist.

The Devote has a typical tote shape but is more relaxed and slouchy than many similar purses. A leather panel on the bottom half of the bag keeps it from looking sloppy, though. The sunshine yellow is perfect for the upcoming season. This bright tone also makes the details on the handbag stand out.

The best features, in my opinion, are the buckles that loop through the top and grace the sides of the tote connecting to the shoulder strap. Without these interesting touches, the Devote is just a high quality yet typical purse. The loops and buckles give it some much-appreciated flair and maybe even a touch of vintage chic.

The single handle is great for toting around this Rebecca Minkoff handbag. You’ll find several pockets inside the large Devote. The top closes with a snap, and metal feet protect the bottom. This stylish purse also comes in fawn brown and peacock green and retails for $630.

Just try to resist smiling at the sight of this appropriately named Happy Clutch from Tory Burch.

Large colored spots give this suede purse a playful feel. This design could so easily appear childish, but the glazed leather bordering each spot helps make it a little more chic. The polished gold Tory Burch logo plate also helps to up the sophistication level. I love this vibrant red and pink spotted purse, but more conservative tastes could opt for the more subdued dark brown and tan clutch.

This purse may be slim, but a host of organization features do their best to make the most of the space on offer. Double zip pockets inside gives you a secure place to store coins and other valuables. The size is in keeping with the current trend for oversized clutches, but the narrow design ensures it stays manageable.

The gold-toned shoulder strap adds practicality and style. I can’t imagine the metal chain would feel too comfortable on your shoulder though, so if you’re wearing a strapless dress hand-held carrying is probably a better option!

For fans of the Chloe Heloise line, the Heloise Hobo is just another in a family of gorgeous Chloe bags. But, even if you’ve never heard of the Heloise, you’re going to love Chloe’s classy take on the ever popular hobo.

The light caramel brown color of the leather has both a bohemian appeal (I see suede boots) and a classic one (think Tory Burch slides). The braided leather detail on the flat leather handle gives the bag a dressed down vibe that contrasts beautifully with the tailored pleating on the front. I find the pleating design particularly lovely because of its simplicity. The wide, smooth pleats are sweet without giving the tote too much slouch.

The structured design, and overall squared-off hobo shape will definitely appeal to classicists, as will the remarkable sheen of the material. My favorite detail on the Heloise Hobo, however, is the fantastical designed and imminently practical mini-pocket at the top. I can’t get over what a quirky addition it is on this sophisticated bag, and I love the idea of knowing exactly where my keys are at all times.

Inside, you will find a lovely twill lining, a pocket for your cell phone, and a zippered pocket for all that extra little stuff. The high Chloe quality shines through in every aspect of the bag, from top to bottom, inside and out.
