We don’t all need a huge handbag for everyday use. However, these ubiquitous oversized bags we’ve been seeing so much of lately are extremely practical for quick weekend trips and other occasions that call for larger than your average bag size.

Michael Kors’ large Harrison Drawstring Tote is one such handbag that will serve you well when you need lots of storage space. With its interior and exterior compartments, the Harrison serves up practicality on a well-designed platter of a bag. The shape is familiar as we’ve seen it on other satchels, but I like this tote’s quality details like soft leather and bright hardware.

The drawstring around the top allows you to customize the slouchiness according to your preference. It also functions along with a magnetic tab closure to keep everything safe inside. The clutch-sized, built-in “wallet” on the front of the Harrison is surprisingly unbulky and blends in nicely with the rest of the handbag. I love the buckled details that add some extra detail to the front compartment.

This Michael Kors tote is definitely not the largest of large bags available on the market today, but I think it would function nicely as a traveling companion or even a casual purse if you require this much storage. The Harrison also comes in an attractive hobo version as well as a cute carryall that is strikingly similar to the exterior compartment.

When I first moved to New York City, I was disappointed. I expected that as soon as I stepped foot in The Big City I would be given a jetpack and a robot housekeeper, like on the Jetsons. I soon found other reasons to love New York, but my yearning for an ultra modern future perfect has never waned. I never thought my desires would be granted in the guise of a handbag, but I’ll take wish fulfillment any way I can get it. 

The complex and sophisticated geometry of the Neon Panel Clutch is what holds the design of the bag together. The three dimensionality of the clutch is created by pieced together slices of patent leather, and the hot pink and black combination is an Alexander McQueen trademark. I guess I don’t have to say again how much I love this super sleek accessory. Everything about it screams modern, and yet, it also has a vaguely retro flair, I guess you might call it retro-futuristic.

The only thing I don’t love about the bag is the opening. It opens with a gold zipper top, which is practical and all that, but I’d prefer it was some sort of off-kilter clamshell opening, to go with the avant garde look of the clutch. The 13″ x 7″ x 3″ size is big enough to stow away your evening essentials like keys and compact, but small enough to fit nicely in the palm of your hand.

I know this clutch is not for everyone, but on a girl who loves it, it would be the perfect way to liven up a simple black sheath dress, or even a jetpack.

The Maddie Tote Bag from Guess is a purse for our times with its stylish features and recession busting price tag.

This purple purse is no shrinking violet. Its large rounded shape is accented with croc-embossed stripes and a splash of silver studs. I love the way this purple shade demands attention, but if you want to play it a little safer the Maddie is also available in black and brown.

An oversized handbag needs organizational features to ensure it doesn’t become the Bermuda Triangle. Zip and slip pockets inside take care of that, so you’ll have no problems retrieving your ringing cell phone or spare change.

The dual handles are a little shorter than I’d like, but their braided finish looks stunning. Sadly the short drop makes over-the-shoulder carrying awkward unless you’re a skinny Minnie, which is a shame considering this tote’s size.

By crafting the Maddie with imitation calfskin and croc, Guess keeps the cost down just $69.50. At that price you could snare a purple purse for day wear, and a dressier black bag for after five!

Givenchy’s Pumpkin hobo manages to walk that fine line, offering quirky styling that doesn’t look over-the-top. No wonder indie actress Liv Tyler is a fan!

The crescent shape and slight slouch is typically hobo, but this purse’s appearance is far from ordinary thanks to the adorable front pockets. Their gathered design looks just like little pumpkins, and that’s what gives this Givenchy handbag its unusual name. Each pocket’s drawstring has a long tassel, completing this purse’s cute quirky look.

The drawstrings might look sweet, but they make it fiddly to open and close the pockets. Personally I’d save them for show and store all my essentials inside. The narrow design does limit storage space, but there’s ample room for your daily must-haves. Just don’t expect to carry too many luxuries!

Fabulous! This Lanvin Jaismal handbag (pictured right) is utterly, unconditionally and indisputably brilliant! Lanvin keeps on busting out inspired, elegant designer purses with just the right amount of modern edge.

Plus what a difference a strap can make! The other version of this chic bag had a not so desirable chain shoulder strap, but this rendition, with its’ dual top handles, is spot on.

I’m the first to admit that Marc Jacobs is practically a diety to me. And judging by the slew of stores he has opened in the West Village alone over the past few years, I’m not the only one that feels that way. Sometimes when an artist becomes overexposed like this, their work suffers. And while I think that the Marc Jacobs Collection retains its ineluctable charm, sometimes the Marc by Marc line just seems like cute, overpriced stuff that looks like other stuff, only with a Marc Jacobs logo slapped on it.

That basically sums up how I feel about this tote. It is, indeed, adorable. But, adorable in a fifty bucks sort of way, not in a $170 sort of way. Since the handles are leather, I would even go $100, but I simply think that this bag is too expensive for what it is.

Other than the price, there isn’t much to dislike about the tote. It has a fabulous graphic print, a subtle palette of rainbow strips with clouds superimposed on top. At 20″ x 15″ x 4″, the size is fabulous for a beach bag or for running your daily errands. The 7″ drop on the handles makes the tote comfortable to hold by hand or over your shoulder. Personally, I think the handles are a little thin for the size of the bag. If you really want to carry this bag running errands, you’re going to have to skip some of the heavier ones.

All said, the Big Tote Print bag is a cute bag, versatile and utilitarian. I would definitely use it as the bag for stowing my bikini and sunscreen, but I might like it more if it were priced a little more reasonably.

These purses have so much personality, but it’s a shame I can’t say the same thing for the models. Sure they’re attractive specimens, but it’s all surface with little substance. Their vacant expressions and slow, languorous movements might be sexy to some, but I think they’re just snoozeworthy. I understand wanting the fashions to shine, but a handbag should never have more life in it than a human being!
