I have always loved the combination of black and nude, especially when it’s a soft blushy nude, especially when it’s on a bag made of leather, and most especially when that bag is made by Chloe. When you combine it with the retro flair and everyday practicality of a shoulder bag like this one, I’m basically in love.

The contrast between the distressed black patent of the body of the bag and the smooth nude leather of the straps creates a sophisticated vibe on what would otherwise be a very rock-n-roll flavored accessory. The minimal pleating on the front pockets adds volume, and the rectangular shape with the smoothed-off edges gives the bag a retro look that is reminiscent of some of my favorite vintage 80’s accessories. 

The combination of the dual straps with the removable shoulder straps gives you options for how to wear the bag. I can see it as a very feminine touch held by hand, or slung low over your shoulder for a more casual look. The 16″ x 10″ x 6″ size makes it a great everyday bag that will hold not just the essentials, but also more than a few extras.

There isn’t much I don’t like about this Strappy Shoulder Bag by Chloe, including the adorable front pockets. The contrasting horizontal stripe across the bag allows them to blend in, and creates another interesting focal point on an already fabulous bag. At $665, it is a more than reasonable investment for a super-fashionable everyday bag.

The popular show Gossip Girl is a veritable hotbed of the latest fashions. The Monte Carlo Shopper is relatively inexpensive (especially for the GG fashion world) at just under $150. The PVC material is most likely the reason for the low price tag. While not a typical handbag material, the Monte Carlo is practical and durable and will even satisfy animal lovers who dislike the use of leather.

I love the spectrum of bright colors offerred by this Maxx New York purse. The electric blue is a natural standout, but the Monte Carlo also comes in equally eyepopping shades of silver, gold, orange, and a standard black. Each color has a slight sheen that has the appearance of patent leather.

The interior is lined in polyester for a little extra practicality. You’ll also find several pockets for organization. A zippered pocket on the front of the tote is convenient and cute, and studded panels on the sides are a nice touch. You don’t have to be a fan of Gossip Girl to appreciate the practical design and stylish touches on the Maxx New York Monte Carlo.

It seems everyone is feeling the pinch of the financial crisis, and that includes our favorite handbag designers. Marc Jacobs has already canceled its famous holiday party and Fashion Week bash, but desperate times call for even more desperate measures. So now the luxury label is slashing the guest list for its fall fashion show from 2,000 to just 700.

“This isn’t the time to spend the money to entertain the entire world,” explained Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs International.

“Everybody thinks it costs the same money to entertain 500 people as opposed to 2,000. It doesn’t. All those 2,000 people still need to be seated, they still need to check in, this one needs this, that one needs that, and you know what? It’s very costly.”

But don’t expect the elite to file into some dinky little dive to see the show. The fashion parade will still be held at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue, the same venue which has hosted the show for the past few years. Perhaps Marc Jacobs gets a loyalty discount?

Longchamp has everything from high-quality backpacks to classic satchels and everything in between. Miu Miu is the slightly quirkier expression of Miuccia Prada’s design genius. I love the line for its fresh, trend-setting, irreverent appeal. You could say that Miu Miu is what happens to Prada when it goes a little bit off-kilter, still clean and high quality, but, well, a little weird. In other words, Miu Miu is not your mother’s Prada.

The dual rolled leather handles are held to the tote with fabulous grommeted goldtone plates, and the Miu Miu logo is small and unassuming, just how I like it. With a 6″ drop on the handles, the Matellasse is a great bag to carry by hand, but the handles might be a little short to fit comfortably over your shoulder, unless you have a small frame.

The generous 16″ x 12″ x 4″ size makes it a great choice for an everyday bag, particularly if, like me, most of your clothes are black and you need something bright to perk them up. I also think that this bag is ladylike enough be an amazing choice for a girl with preppy taste who’s looking to add a a little touch of the surreal to her wardrobe.
