Coach is fighting back against the financial crisis with their new budget-friendly line, Poppy. As its name suggests, Poppy is a fresher, more youthful collection than its parent line.

“Poppy offers a different attitude that is younger in spirit,” said Coach’s executive creative director, Reed Krakoff. “It’s playful, with more prints, interesting fabrics and more experimentation. [These ideas] are always countered with a more classic shape or a more traditional construction.”

This glam red sequined tote is the perfect example of that philosophy. The Poppy collection will also feature pochettes, footwear, watches, eyewear, and even tiaras! What fun!

Coach knows its teen and young adult target market don’t have a lot of cash to splash around, so accessories will start from $198. You can snare some of the high-end items for just $598. With its geometric patches and original attitude, this Evans patchwork purse evokes all the color of the 1980s.

Some call it the decade that fashion forgot, but those crayon colors and shoulder pads were back in force at the recent New York Fashion Week. This purse may be a little loud for some tastes, but its right on trend.

If this handbag was covered in those angular swatches, it’d probably be a little overwhelming. The white suede-like body and chocolate brown trim provide balance, ensuring this purse doesn’t look like a tragic relic from the past.

This bag is roomy enough to carry plenty, but its slim-lined design ensures it never looks too bulky. I’d have preferred a few more pockets inside, but all the hard interior work is left up to one zippered compartment. Thank goodness for the front pocket cleverly hidden behind those colorful patches.

The design flaws and imitation fabrics are easy to overlook for the bargain retail price of just £20.

Miu Miu is almost always surprising. Their quirky, irreverent designs are the perfect complement to the more classic Prada line, and I always look forward to seeing what Miuccia will come up with next.

With the Miu Miu Large East West Tote, I find myself surprised, but not in a good way. I am surprised by the uncharacteristically bland design of this tote. The color is perfectly neutral, and I’m sure it will go with anything, but honestly, I just find it a bit boring. It might be a nice shade on a different bag, but on something so boxy and uninspired, the neutral tone only contributes to the overall blah-ness.

The shape itself isn’t bad, really. But the details take the boring rectangular shape and make it look clunky and over-thought. The pleats are oddly placed next to the cute pouch pocket, and the pocket itself looks less cute with the enormous hardware slapped onto it.

The dual rolled leather handles are durable and comfortable to carry, but they look awkward on top of the tote. Perhaps it is the squarish goldtone rings that attach the handles to the bag, but they just don’t flow with the lines of the bag. Also, they seem a little thin for a bag that you could easily pack ten pounds of stuff into.

All-in-all, I am deeply surprised and disappointed with this lackluster bag by one of my favorite lines. And for $1,295 retail, there’s just no excuse for being boring.

Miu Miu’s advertising campaigns usually spotlight some of the hottest celebrities that sometimes outshine the merchandise in the images. Stylish stars like Kirsten Dunst and Lindsay Lohan are among those who have been featured in the designer’s ads. Remember Katie Holmes surrounded by handbags for the most recent campaign?

Well, Miu Miu is justifiably proud of their popular advertisements and has created a special exhibit to showcase them. The images have been re-worked into pop-art style screens making them seem even more timeless.

Though the recent fashion weeks are concentrating on fall clothing and accessories, this pastel purple handbag from contemporary designer B. Makowsky really puts me in the mood for spring clothing.

The patchwork leather with tone on tone stitching is a subtle way to add some interest to a satchel. It’s not as overwhelming of a style as something like the Lucky Patchwork Tote but just enough to keep it from looking plain. The combination of patches includes perforated leather and croc-embossed texture.

I’m not a huge fan of the large, chunky chain handles that the shopper has. The part of the handles that sits on your shoulder has, thankfully, a piece of rolled leather for comfort. However, the rest of each strap is made from shiny silver chain link. It’s not that I always disklike chain handles, but these are particularly bulky. However, I suppose it does give the purse a little edge in contrast to the feminine color.

This B. Makowsky collection offers a variety of styles, but the shopper is the largest option. You can also get the Cairo in a square hobo, clutch, and crossbody, if the satchel isn’t your taste. Each one has a distinct purpose for a wardrobe, but all of them have the same modern style. The large shopper retails for $258.

The walls are lined with several slip and zip pockets to keep things in order.

The conservative cream and brown shades may disappoint bolder fashionistas, but everyone should have at least one bag in these tones in their closet.
