Spring is springing up all over the department stores, and with it has come a new crop of woven handbags. Bottega Veneta is, as they sometimes do, leading the pack on this trend with their recently released purses in traditional intrecciato. With this Half Moon Clutch, Bottega ups the ante by combining specchio kid leather, karung, ayers, and nappa intrecciato detailing. If these Italian words don’t mean anything to you, just know that they are different kinds of leather, from shiny (specchio) to snakeskin (karung), and intrecciato is a style of weaving.

Complicated foreign nomenclature aside, this clutch is simple, classic, and gorgeously made. The combination of colors and textures is perfectly balanced, and while it makes me feel like Spring to see all this weaving, I can see this bag taking you right into Fall with no problem. The tones are light enough for summer, but rich enough to complement almost any color palette.

The 11″ x 6″ x 3″ size is great for stowing your evening essentials, although I think that the Half Moon Clutch would also be a great daytime party bag. Half moon shapes are always my favorite for handheld comfort, and I think this bag is only going to get better broken in with a lot of hand holding.

The only drawback I see on the clutch is the price. At $1,650, it isn’t really formal enough to use with a fancy evening ensemble, but it isn’t really big enough to become a great everyday bag. Still, if your tax refund comes in big, maybe you’ll feel like splurging on a bag that is definitely beautiful, but slightly impractical. If you’re like me, though, you might just admire it from afar.

Canvas totes are durable, lightweight, and affordable, but they’re often lacking in the style department. Hayden-Harnett do their best to dress up this summer favorite with the Erol.

Take one traditional canvas tote in natural white, navy blue, or sun yellow. Add a little tan leather and an ordinary canvas bag gets interesting. The leather accents give the purse a little extra sophistication. It makes the tote just as appropriate for a trip to the pool or a café lunch with the girls.

Givenchy dress up the traditional shopper with the royally titled George V.

The black leather finish may not be revolutionary, but it’s still worth coveting. The calfskin is sumptuously soft and subtly textured with a natural grain. Complementary black stitching runs from top to bottom and around the middle, creating a cross design. A tassel hangs from the side of the shopper, adding a little fun to this classic-looking purse. I adore this whimsical touch and think the tote would look a little bare without it, but if it’s not for you it’s easy to unclip.

Also easy to remove is the shoulder strap. Personally I’d do just that. The in-built handles are so long and wide, I’m not sure the single strap adds any extra value. In my mind, leaving it on just makes the George V look cluttered.

And don’t we all hate clutter! Thankfully we won’t have to worry about it inside either. Purses this size can so easily become disorganized, but the George V has enough pockets to keep things in check. With a large zippered pocket and two smaller slip pouches even the messiest bagistas can keep their essentials in order.

At $1,595 retail, the George V is more guilty pleasure than recession-friendly accessory. Thankfully it’s got the classic looks to help us justify the splurge.

I might be using the term “retro-futuristic” a lot lately, but I’m pretty sure that Alexander McQueen invented the idea. His crisp lines and ingenious use of materials combine to produce a handbag that is modern with a vintage flair.

Never has patent leather ever been so lucky (or shiny) as it is on this tote! The leather has been molded to showcase its unparalleled sleekness, and layered to create volume and depth. The bag looks almost trompe l’oeil, but there is no trick, the geometric face of the bag really stands out a full inch from the body of the main compartment.

The shape is classic and reminiscent of the ladylike satchels of film noir, and the glossiness makes it the ultimate accessory for your favorite femme fatale. Either Versace hasn’t felt the effects of the recent economic downturn, or the luxury brand saw a need to offer more variety in their style and prices.

The popular design house has decided to re-launch their sister company, Versus, which originally made its debut in 1989 but closed during a company downsizing. Our current fashion recession seems like the ideal time to bring out the Versace line once more.

The rejuvenated brand will again offer younger styles at a slightly more affordable price point than older sibling Versace, just as Miu Miu provides the same function for Prada. Its comeback will start with a new spring/summer 2010 clothing collection. We’ll see a handful of accessories at the Milan Fashion Week. Bring on the handbags!

It remains to be seen if Versus will create the revenue Versace obviously expects. As just one of many with a lighter wallet these days, I’m predicting popularity for the brand as long as the prices are relatively affordable.
