Muska Milano has recreated the look of prized crocodile leather with this beautiful satchel.

The embossed pattern mimics each reptilian scale so convincingly that no one needs to know you’re not carrying an authentic exotic handbag. This racy red purse is just one of many colors available. The palette tends to be a little conservative, but with shades including black, chestnut, orange, white, and burgundy there should be one to suit almost every taste. Chic belted accents at the side of the bag help to dress up the basic design.

The interior is inspired, with a large zippered compartment dividing the satchel into three parts. A zippered pocket and a couple of slip pouches further aid organization, offering a place for your cell phone, spare change, and other small objects.

The shoulder straps are less impressive. While they’re long enough, they’re so thin that they’re bound to leave marks on your shoulder. This satchel comes with a longer detachable strap, but it’s only marginally wider. If you’ve got a lot of walking to do I suggest leaving your heavy objects at home.

I could overlook the handles if I wasn’t running errands, but the price is another matter. I’m not sure Muska Milano has the profile to command $750 for a purse that isn’t really as exotic as it pretends to be. Personally I’d rather invest in cheaper contemporaries like the Nine West Great Find tote or the Jessica Simpson Delia. Or you could just save up for the real deal!

The fashion weeks are in full rage and have gone from one side of the world to the other without stopping for a breath. Milan’s runways are currently crowded with the newest fall fashions from bigwigs like Versace, Fendi, and, of course, Prada.

Prada’s fall 2009 handbag designs are a rush of textures. There’s also an overwhelming amount of work-ish doctor’s bag shapes, which seems to be an trend for the season.

If you’re thinking the collection sounds masculine, though, think again. After a handful of obligatory leather bags, picture a parade of bejewelled clutches and dyed fur. Yes, folks, handbags covered in fur and looking like an actual animal with a shoulder strap sticking out of it. I can’t imagine what PETA’s reaction is. Hmmm … something about the devil wearing it comes to mind.

I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. I don’t see Michael Kors as a particularly cutting edge designer who pushes the boundaries of fashion and makes people look twice. However, he’s got his niche figured out and always seems to give us classy styles that aren’t shocking but really can’t be criticized.

It was hard to put that thought from my mind when I first saw this Rehearsal Satchel. It’s not that I find it unappealing; it’s just not amazing. I don’t dislike it one bit, though.

Like all Michael Kors handbags, the Rehearsal is made from quality leather and completed with impeccable details that you’d expect from a designer bag that costs nearly $1400. I do like the bright, sunny yellow color, although this tote is also available in a few other colors too. If you’re willing to shell out close to $3000, you can get the Rehearsal in trendy python.

The top has that slouchy drawstring look that we’ve been seeing a lot from Michael Kors lately, as in the Harrison and the Desert totes. The square-shaped handle rings are a nice touch as well as the logo-engraved handle anchor plates. I find myself scratching my head a bit about the side zippered detail, but the tassels aren’t bad.

All in all, it’s not the best I’ve seen from Kors, but the Rehearsal is a classic style that will probably last you for years. Plus, Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham has been seen with it, which is enough to make some women pull out their credit cards faster than you can blink.

Miu Miu, the little sister line to the more recognizable House of Prada, is known for quirky, offbeat, irreverent designs that rival the quality of Prada for a much lower price point. Usually I adore most anything they come up with, and my yearly fashion wishlist is regularly dominated by their styles, but I have to say that I just don’t know what they’re going for with this one.

The Miu Miu Geometric Snake Bag is a snake-embossed material printed with a pixelated black and red checkerboard print. That’s certainly a mouthful, and it looks it. I am always a fan of adventurous texture mixing, but this is taking things a bit far. The pixelated design might be nice against a sleek patent leather, but against the snake embossed material, it gets muddied.

The overdesign of the bag only starts with the print. The dual leather handles that attach to the bag are too think to bring any elegance to the bag, and the removable shoulder strap is too thin to be practical.

To be honest, I might buy this bag at a thrift store for $3.99 to wear with my favorite 80’s geo-print sweaters and leggings, but $1,150 seems like a joke. You can get this look for a lot less, and I’m not sure anyone wants it that badly, anyways.

I adore this Badgley Mischka Platinum Label Kara Messenger Bag (shown in beige to the right). The fact that it’s priced under $500 makes me want it even more. It’s boho-chic, fashionable, surprisingly functional and quite versatile.

You can carry it on your arm, over the shoulder (if you’re very skinny) or cross-body. However, its’ roomy (17 x 14 x 1) size makes this bag more of a tote than a messenger bag.

The beige leather exterior can compliment almost any wardrobe staple, and the chain shoulder strap is detachable if chains are not your cup of tea.

The buckled, wrap-around straps and tassels are visually inviting without being design overkill. There’s a magnetic snap closure and interior pockets for added storage.

This Badgley Mischka design is a good investment and the price tag is its’ best selling point. Snatch this one up just in time for spring and even summer.

Lulu Guinness effortlessly mixes old world glamour with modern cheek in this Naughty & Nice clutch.

By now, it’s old news that Versace’s funkier brand Versus is coming back to life. And I reported last week about Christopher Kane’s collaboration with the company for an accessories line. Well, Milan Fashion Week has brought us a sneak peek of what’s to come for the revived brand.

Fashionistas, get ready for an edgy side of Versace because Kane’s line of bags, shoes, and jewelry for Versus will be anything but ordinary. Think structured, studded, tasselled, and embellished with lots of metal. The handful of handbags that I’ve seen (like those pictured here) look like something that could withstand a nuclear disaster … or at least a daily beating.

You can expect the price range of these new accessories to be somewhere between $800 to $2600. I’m not sure how this is particularly more affordable and “accessible to the streets” as Versus has been hailed, but the styles are definitely intriguing. However, I’ll withhold my full opinion of the line until all has been revealed.

Versace Handbags on eBay

The woven leather look is certainly nothing new for handbag fashion. The intricate technique has been done again and again for spring and summer collections. Though these basket-like bags are a dime a dozen right now, the Cole Haan Denney stood out to me with its simple design.

The Denney bag has actually been around for a little while and has been available in suede for the fall/winter months. This version, though, is from Cole Haan’s woven Genevieve collection just like the Triangle Tote I reviewed several weeks ago.

While the tanned leather material used on the two handbags is the same, the styles are very different. I actually prefer the Denney for everyday use because of its more practical aspects. Personally, I can see myself losing endless amounts of important things at the bottom of the Triangle Tote, whereas the Denney would have easier access to items due to its wide rather than deep shape.

I always appreciate side pockets, too, even though they’re not the most aesthetically pleasing detail. From a convenience standpoint, though, they are a great addition. My one complaint about this version of the Denney is the shiny metallic hardware that jumps out at you. Combined with the woven texture, it makes the purse just a little too busy, in my opinion. Maybe a brushed metal would’ve been less distracting.

The Cole Haan Denney comes in this large chocolate-colored Genevieve optical weave as well as a multitude of other colors and sizes. Look for it in solid leather and suede too. This large woven version sells for $595.
