When I think of an artistic director, a budding comedian isn’t exactly what comes to my mind. However, Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz apparently had a store opening crowd “in stitches” as he entertained with his quick wit and humor.

The designer for the long-running French design house was in London to celebrate the opening of a new women’s store, surprisingly Lanvin’s first for the city. Elbaz provided a show-and-tell presentation for the spring collection splashed with pithy side comments such as:

“I dress women. I don’t undress them — unfortunately. My mother would be happy if I did.”

Among the amused crowd were some of the designer’s fellow fashion lovers such as models Anouck Lepere and Yasmin LeBon and fashion photographer Juergen Teller. Though he might have a knack for stand-up comedy, thankfully Elbaz will continue his divine work with Lanvin as the company continues to expand.

The offshoot brand Moschino Cheap & Chic has a somewhat misleading name, depending on who you ask. Though definitely chic, I find Moschino’s term “cheap” to perhaps be a little tongue-in-cheek humor since the items offered generally retail at designer prices beyond what the average person considers to be cheap. Especially with the economy as it is now, I think most shoppers’ frame of reference for the word has shifted a little.

That being said, Moschino Cheap & Chic still has some noteworthy accessories crafted with high-quality materials and impeccable style. The Rosa shoulder bag is one of them. With a price tag of nearly $1300, this satchel is made to impress and accomplishes that task rather nicely.

The pastel goat leather has a hint of sheen to it, which highlights the material’s texture. Belted details abound on the Rosa with a buckled closure and decorative buckles on the front. Its silver hardware blends well with the shimmery lavender-colored leather.

Thankfully, this Moschino handbag was built for more than style, though. Equally as impressive as the quality, the Rosa could be extremely functional for busy women who need plenty of storage inside and out of a bag. The satin-lined interior with a zippered pocket will hold an acceptable amount of items.

The exterior, however, is where the Rosa earns its worth as being convenient. Although not exactly adding to the chic factor, pockets on either side of the bag provide easy access storage for small necessities. They kind of give the satchel a diaper bag look but not enough to count it out as a viable option for a stylish designer handbag.

Fendi is making me feel a little out of touch with reality right now. Because I know for sure that I fell asleep in a world that had sensible rules like gravity, and woke up to a world in which it is okay to cover a purse in what appears to be my sticker collection from the fourth grade and slap a $4,100 price tag on it.

I know, it’s Fendi, it’s supposed to be a little over-the-top flashy, but seriously, I can’t help but think that this is just too much. I think it’s really fantastic that the combination of metallic pastel leather and reptile stamping creates a fabric that looks holographic, but I don’t really want it to be part of my accessories collection. At any price.

And if the totally bizarre material wasn’t enough to do it, the stitching surely takes this bag over the edge. And if the stitching doesn’t do it, then what about the red contrast stitch closure? It looks like they sewed it up with cinnamon dental floss, and I, for one, find this completely unacceptable. (Not all the time, on something edgy it might make sense, but on this?)

The truth of the matter is that the Fendi baguette is iconic all on its own, and it really doesn’t need to be over-embellished to make a statement. Period.

It might not take you from nine to five, but the Potting Shed is a fun and functional daytime companion.

It’s been a long time coming, but Chloé’s Los Angeles outlet has finally opened its doors.

The Melrose Place boutique’s opening was delayed for years due to construction woes, but it looks like it was worth the wait. The new store feels more like a townhouse than a retail outlet with its crisp white walls, landscaped courtyard, huge skylights, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

It might be beautiful, but is this really the time for any new retail venture to succeed? Other Melrose Place boutiques like Marni, Carolina Herrera, and Oscar de la Renta have never really attracted large crowds. And ever since the financial crisis hit, budget conscious shoppers have been ditching designer outlets for vintage stores. Upscale designer stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks have also left the stand-alone stores in the cold by dramatically slashing the prices of luxury goods.

The odds are against the new store’s success, but Chloé is putting its best foot forward by hosting a star-studded opening party at Milk Studios next month. With style icons like Kate Bosworth and Chloë Sevigny set to attend, it might just provide the exposure Chloé needs in this tough economic climate.

This bag is dubbed the equestrian feedbag, a name which instantly makes me think of a hessian sack filled with carrots or hay for Mr. Ed. But in reality this Isaac Mizrahi handbag shows a casual sophistication.

Drawstrings typically make a bag look relaxed, but this leather one’s a little more dressed up than the average. It threads through eyelets sitting on oval leather patches for a casual-chic look. This laid-back sophistication is complemented by the soft leather finish. This makes the equestrian feedbag the sort of purse we can take to the office, and out for cocktails after we’re done.

Some might say that the thin leather drawstring reminds them of a horse’s reins. The front pocket has a fun saddle shape too. These quirky little details give the equestrian feedbag its name, but they’re not so obvious that they distract.

The equestrian feedbag is a little on the bulky side, which makes the choice of handles a little confusing. The overall shape of the bag reminds me of a backpack, and those long shoulder straps would have been a godsend here. So to find these short handles in their place is a little puzzling. With a drop of just 6.5 inches, they make over-the-shoulder carrying a little difficult for women with curves. But we’re going to struggle carrying such a hefty purse by hand over any distance.

Isaac Mizrahi’s Equestrian feedback is also available in almond white. This shade looks pristine brand new but is likely to show some battle scars in its old age.

Though some fashion followers were shocked by the recent departure of Olivier Theyskens from design house Nina Ricci, things are looking up for the company. With the sometimes edgy creative director out, the brand is marching full steam ahead to a style that combines classic and unique.

Fans of Nina Ricci won’t be surprised by this switcheroo and probably won’t be one bit upset either. By the looks of their latest handbag collection, recently launched at London’s Dover Street Market, the company won’t be slowing down any time soon. They’ve even devised a new horseshoe-shaped motif, which style accessories director Juha Marttila explained.

“We wanted to find a motif – a logo that wasn’t too obvious – that is how we developed the twisted bread shape,” Marttila explained. “This will be a motif we will carry on for the coming seasons, it will become associated with the label.”

I’d expect this new hand-crafted, classic look to go very well for them. In the days that shoppers are choosing timeless over trendy, Nina Ricci seems to know what a gal wants.

There’s something about 80’s retro-style nostalgia that I can really get into. Maybe it’s how decadent and over-the-top the best of the 80’s styles were, but I also think it’s that decade really redefined casual night-out dressing. It really wasn’t until then that you could wear jeans and heels to a nightclub, and who wants to remember a time before that?

Anya Hindmarch is not a designer I usually associate with retro styles, but this time she hit the nail on the head. This big blue patent clutch has “wear me with neon pumps” written all over it. Of course, it would also be fabulous as a pop of color to some more neutral tones.

The color of the Louisa clutch won me over immediately. This is the definition of electric blue. The shape of the bag is so simple, sleek, and voluptuous that it just begs to be held. And the giant blue gemstone on the front ups the glam factor a ton.

At 12″ x 5″ x 2″, the Louisa is large, but not oversized. There’s plenty of room for your essentials, and there’s even an adorable separate press-stud purse on the inside for those crucial items like your ID and subway card.

I have been trying to find some fatal flaw in this bag, but honestly, I just don’t see anything. The price, at $395, is high, but still reasonable for a well-constructed designer item.

Colorblocked accessories are so hot this season, but it’s sometimes hard to pull off the look without appearing like a 1980s reject. This Hayden-Harnett Clara clutch gets it right with its conservative tones and sleek appearance.

The predominantly black leather finish is embellished with a pale gray patch on the flap and plum piping. Turquoise and green tones are introduced in the art deco-inspired signature lock. So many shades could easily look hodge-podge, but by keeping them muted and classic the result is dazzling. It’s a shame that I can’t say the same thing for the other Clara varieties, which lose their elegance with such loud competing tones.

This clutch is a real statement piece, but when you open it up you’ll realize the Clara is so much more. It appears more like a wallet, with two cash compartments, a zip pocket, and plenty of credit card slots. These organizational features are complemented by a handy zippered pocket on the rear of the purse.

Ordinarily I’d expect to pay a pretty penny for such a gorgeous leather clutch. But we can always count on Hayden-Harnett to offer value for money. The Clara is available for just $220.
