I wouldn’t call a backpack a necessary accessory unless you’re a student or you find yourself hitting the trails often. However, when an event calls for such a practical means of toting your stuff, a backpack can be seriously handy.

The LeSportsac Morgan backpack in black and white, with just the tiniest bit of yellow thrown in, might be as classic as this style of bag will get, besides going for a solid leather one. The whimsical print, Delight, is slightly cutesy, but not nearly as juvenile as something like the Juicy Couture Puffed Backpack.

The pattern is full of flowers and other shapes, which could be busy in bright colors but manages to be somewhat abstract in this simple color combination. Although it’s a mini, the Morgan is still practical with its weather-friendly nylon exterior fabric. It becomes even more convenient when you realize the inside is lined in nylon as well. I can imagine how many moms, hikers, and maybe even messy people would appreciate that unexpected feature.

As you’d expect, the Morgan Mini backpack has a zippered pocket on the outside for storing small items that would normally be lost at the bottom of a bag. You won’t be able to tote around more than a few books and a handful of other stuff, but it’s a easy way to travel not to mention affordable at only $68.

Women all over the world find Jimmy Choo’s shoes totally irresistible. I’m only somewhat partial to them myself, but I have to say that, for the most part, I have been totally disappointed by his accessories line. It lacks the sophisticated simplicity of his shoes, and falls a little short of what I expect from a high-end designer.

The Lola Medium Slouchy Tote, unfortunately, is no exception. There are things that I really like about it, like the sleek white leather and the elaborate perforated design. But the things I don’t like about the bag outweigh the things I do like. The complicated braided leather and multiple clasp handle, for one, looks overdesigned and unwieldy. And the giant gold studs, I think, take something away from the delicacy of the cutout design. Plus, their star shape has sort of a country western appeal that doesn’t fit with the rest of the bag.

I know that blatant branding doesn’t bother that many people, but here again, I am one of the few, and I really don’t like that JIMMY CHOO has been cut into the leather. It seems a little tacky and obvious. Overall, there is just too much going on here for me to focus on the beautiful parts of the bag, and that is a major bummer.

This is the kind of stylish bag I can see easily making the transition from day to night. Of course with limited space, you may need to stop home to replace your daytime goodies with your evening must haves!

The financial crisis hasn’t tainted the allure of our favorite luxury handbags. US magazine Forbes says the top three designer labels have maintained their worth in the face of the credit crunch.

French fashion house Louis Vuitton is still leading the pack with a brand value of $19 billion US. It’s streaks ahead of second place getters, Hermes, which has a net worth of $7.8 billion. But it might not be the bag bridesmaid for too long. Gucci is nipping at Hermes’ heels with a value of $7.4 billion.

Financial experts say that high-end luxury brands have fared better during the global recession than their mid-market counterparts. They say bagistas would prefer to drop a few thousand dollars on a single investment piece than purchase many cheaper purses.

I’m not sure I agree with that, but I do believe handbag lovers are searching for quality rather than quantity. With newer brands like Botkier and Elliott Lucca creating luxurious leather bags for less, I’m just not sure you need to rely on those iconic labels for that quality.

The financial crisis hasn’t tempered our taste for exotic purses, but it has forced many of us to tighten our belts. Convincing alternatives like this Evans clutch allow us to have all of the glamor of these luxury leathers at a fraction of the price.

This sexy purse favors a simple design which puts the glossy mock croc finish in the spotlight. The slick patent fabric shines, emphasizing each and every scale.

I only wish the rest of the purse could be so alluring. The slender profile looks chic, but it’s entirely impractical for most evenings out. Your cosmetics and cell phone will fit inside, but they’ll make tell-tale bulges too.

There’s no shoulder strap either, which is bound to become tiresome towards the end of any big night. The slim design makes hand-held carrying easy, but it’s also a little restrictive when you want to dance with that handsome stranger or indulge in a few cocktails.

It’s called a clutch, but its flaws mean I probably wouldn’t use it that way. It’s not my ideal evening bag, but it could be a great wallet to stash inside a larger tote.

Natalia Vodianova is one of my favorite models to follow. She’s just so unique, sophisticated, chic, and seemingly unpretentious.

Considering that description, I really can’t think of anyone better to model for designer Nina Ricci, whose collections embody everything that Vodianova represents. The Russian supermodel is currently starring in Nina Ricci’s spring/summer 09 accessories advertising campaign in which she showcases some gorgeous new handbags from the label.

In light of their recent staff change, it appears that the company is trying to up their game and their image with the ads. From the looks of this sampling, I’d say they’re definitely on the right track.

Nothing says summer like a woven tote. And nothing says luxury like patent lambskin. Put them together and you have this delicious Dior Patent Lambskin Woven Tote. Can’t you just imagine stowing your cover-ups and SPFs in this babe of a bag? I know I can.

Dior takes the traditional tote shape and infuses it with luxurious materials and generous sizing. This 11″ x 10″ x 6.5″ bag is the perfect beach carryall for dedicated fashionistas, but it would also make a great everyday bag. For everyday bags, I prefer a full zip top for security, but I’ll take the magnetic clasp on this one in a pinch.

The variegated lambskin weave is tight enough not to have that basket-y look that some woven bags get. And, of course, it’s fully lined in leather for added durability. The base has small metal feet to protect the bag from scrapes and scratches, and the interior includes a zipper pocket and a cell phone pocket. The round patent leather handles don’t really do much for me, personally. I don’t like how smooth they are in contrast with the rest of the bag, but they are well-designed and sturdy, nonetheless.  

I can imagine this bag working for different kinds of women, or for one woman with several different styles. This is the kind of investment piece that can go from classic conservative to beachy boho seamlessly.
