Nina Ricci keeps it simple with this chic clutch.

It’s the antidote to all those overworked evening purses covered in sparkling sequins, glittering rhinestones, frills and frippery. Instead the lines are smooth, and the details are kept to a bare minimum.

Of course basic never means boring where Nina Ricci is concerned. The highlight is the asymmetrical flap top closure, which adds interest without overwhelming the design. The salmon suede is unexpected too. Pink could never be called conservative, but the pastel shade is just subdued enough to provide pop without dominating an outfit.

While that minimalistic approach gives this clutch a sleek look, it also sees us do without the little extras we love. There are no interior pockets, and no shoulder strap tucked inside either. What you see is really what you’ll get.

It looks so stylish brand new, but I’m not convinced of this clutch’s staying power. Suede has a tendency to look worn, and the pale pink hue isn’t likely to hide battle scars. I suggest treating this purse with kid gloves if you hope to carry it for a few seasons.

The quickest way to inject a little freshness into your wardrobe for a new season is a new accessory. With this Sonia Kashuk Valet Bag, it’s also the cheapest.

The print caught my eye while I was reading the Steals and Deals column on IVillage. These types of prints are seen on higher-end bags all the time (Pucci anyone?) and Kashuk’s line for Target is always of great quality. So, this won’t look like a $20 handbag the way one from Old Navy might. It probably won’t hold up as well as a designer piece, but it will certainly travel many miles with you. The soft-sided construction and included cosmetic bag are perfect for overnighting it in style.

The nylon bag is embellished with colored trim in case the bright floral/geometric print wasn’t enough for you. The handles are certainly a stylistic low point on the piece, but they get the job done. A detachable shoulder strap would have gone a long way towards making this more user-friendly, but you can’t have everything when something this cute is this cheap.

Fashionistas were out in droves the other night as designers, models, and more than a few celebrities gathered for the infamously exclusive Costume Institute Gala in New York City.

The event celebrated the opening of an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The theme for the evening was “The Model as Muse”, an appropriate choice since the new exhibit is entitled Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion.

Bag Bunch favorite and Louis Vuitton Creative Director Marc Jacobs co-hosted the event with supermodel extraordinaire Kate Moss, who is undoubtedly many a fashion designer’s muse. Luxury labels were everywhere to be seen that night, with more than a handful of people in Jacobs’ designs, including Moss and Victoria Beckham.

Don’t you love a fashion label with a great name? As any marketing guru will tell you, having a great name can move your brand from average to brilliant. Make Love Not Trash have done just that, with an environmental statement dressed up in trendy 60s philosophies. It is the main reason that this bag caught my eye, and as I looked closer I realized I liked what I saw!

The designers have produced a whole range of eco-totes, satchels and more, but this one is my particular favorite. Echoing the brand name, the shoppers encourage their owners to avoid making unnecessary trash/pollution. The first step? Giving up disposable bags in favour of multi-purpose (and highly fashionable) canvas hold-alls likes this.

I’m sure I am not the only one for whom recycling and global responsibility can be a balancing act with looking and feeling good. Thankfully this Fly Away tote manages to push all the necessary buttons, resulting in a cute and casual tote with a strong retro vibe. The cute stitched heart with wings completes a graphic and textual design, and I adore the bright blood red against the neutral background and black text.

Canvas bags like this will last you for years. They are reinforced throughout, and the natural cotton canvas means you can slam them about about with minimal damage. They are even usually washable! Be careful that the non-toxic eco-paint doesn’t flake off however, as this is the price we pay for friendly green materials! It’s not a huge price though, as this bag is only $38.

This hippie bag is great for making environmental and philosophical statements. It is even better, however, at looking cute and being functional. What a great shopper for the city girl with everything else!

At first glance, this Big Buddha Uptown bag’s shape reminds me of the Jessica Simpson Gotham Satchel. However, while the Gotham has a structured appearance, the Uptown looks a little more laid-back.   

It’s not a slouchy, boho-style handbag that you’d carry with very casual outfits. Instead, the style results in a combination of informal and dressy, making it a useful addition to an accessories collection.

There aren’t too many features on this Big Buddha bag that scream “casual”. However, the folded up sides keep the style a little relaxed. A slightly crinkled texture on the manmade material adds to the effect.

Of course, the most noticeable detail on the bag is the metallic color. Although it is technically labeled gold, there seems to be some silver in the washed-out areas of the synthetic leather. The unexpected color choice is a nice spin on the classic handbag shape of the Uptown.

At the end of the month I’m attending a ball to raise funds for breast cancer research. Naturally, the theme is black and pink. I considered finding a black clutch, but knowing my purse would be just one in a sea of conservative tones I decided against it. And so my quest for that perfect pink bag was born.

It’s not as easy as it sounds. Most pink purses tend to be excessively girly affairs, with frothy candy colors. This Maddalena Marconi clutch bucks the trend, with a rosy shade that’s feminine yet subdued. This soft tone is rendered on glam satin, ideal for any evening soiree.

The glitz is amped up by a smattering of white Swarovski crystals and polished gold hardware. I love the gems, but I’m less convinced by the brassy gold. Silver may not have looked so rich, but I think it would be a better complement to the blush satin.

Clutches tend to compromise storage space, and this one’s no exception. The frame design creates a chic profile, but it also doesn’t allow for overstuffing. This is strictly a purse for carrying the bare essentials.

Ultimately what makes me hesitate most is the price. For $615, I demand an accessory I’ll get plenty of use from. A pink purse is perfect for a breast cancer ball, but I’m not sure what other occasion might call for it!

Louis Vuitton has gifted British department store Selfridges with a very special birthday surprise. It’s this cake trunk, a miniature version of their legendary trunk designed especially for transporting birthday cake.

The unique one-of-a-kind piece was handmade in Louis Vuitton’s Asnieres factory. The exterior sports the famous brown on tan Louis Vuitton logo, while the interior is lined in yellow fabric as a tribute to the high-end department store.

The trunk was tailor-made to carry a cake and six table settings, including spoons, cutlery, and an all-important cake cutter.

The cake trunk will be displayed in Selfridges’ Personal Shopping section until May 15. After that it will be auctioned off to raise funds for a children’s cancer charity.

Wouldn’t this be the perfect piece to complete a special birthday party? I know it’ll fetch well beyond what mere mortals can afford to pay, but at least the funds will go somewhere worthwhile rather than lining Louis Vuitton’s coffers!

The Jordan is for those girls who love to look good, but don’t want to try too hard. It takes care of the style, so you can just grab and go.

The leather is embossed with a subtle snakeskin print and finished with a glossy sheen. The shiny fabric is paired with equally glitzy gold hardware. All that sparkle looks a little tacky for my tastes, but it will appeal to divas who dare to stand out. This ultraberry pink is perfect for that, but if you prefer something a little more subdued check out the azure, celadon green, or black bags.

The style may be a little bold for some tastes, but it’s hard to find fault with the practical design. The ample interior houses plenty of pockets, so the hardest part is remembering where you put what!

Of course with space to spare, the Jordan does tend to get weighty. If you’re packing it to capacity, forget about struggling with that short little handle. Just attach the removable shoulder strap instead for easy breezy cross body carrying.

I wouldn’t call $295 inexpensive, but it’s a fraction of the cost of genuine snakeskin. Add the Jordan’s practical styling and high-quality leather and you’ve got a pretty attractive proposition.

Dolce & Gabbana have been at the head of the trends for as long as I can remember, and there’s no mistaking why. It’s because they give fashionistas a high quality, fashion driven selection of designs.

Someone’s either got it out for Anya Hindmarch or has a real thing for her handbag designs.

A smash-and-grab gang burglarized one of the designer’s London stores on Monday. Unfortunately, this is the sixth time that the label’s stores have been targeted.

Anya Hindmarch said of the incident, “I am devastated that we have been broken into once again.  Whilst I suppose it is flattering to think that there is a demand for our product, to be targeted so many times and have had such a great volume of stock taken is a real blow and disrupts our business.”

I’m not sure I’d call it flattering, but it definitely seems inconvenient. The group of thieves has filched more than just Anya Hindmarch’s goods though. This scooter-riding gang, armed with conspicuous window-breaking sledgehammers, have raided Chanel, Gucci, and Mulberry stores in the past. Creates quite a mental picture, doesn’t it?
