Emilio Pucci has a reputation for creating bags that are bold and brassy. This purse may not have the colorful signature print we’ve come to associate with the designer, but it definitely doesn’t lack any personality.

The problem for me though is that it just seems a little too big. Gold leather is a statement all its own, a fabric that needs to be handled with care lest it overwhelm an outfit. It definitely doesn’t need all the embellishments we see here.

The bag’s body is covered with stripes of beads and rhinestones. The occasional bit of sparkle can add color, but when done to excess these features look overworked and tacky.

Another competing element is those handles. They’re so chunky, and the whipstitching clashes with the gold studs. The plethora of skinny leather straps which attach the handles are just another detail which fights for attention.

The result is a bag which is simply overworked. The busy design might appeal to those ostentatious divas out there, but most bagistas will pass this purse over for a much chicer, sleeker look.

Guess is famous for mimicking the looks of designer bags for a fraction of the cost. But now its biggest competitor, Gucci, has had enough. The luxury label is suing for trademark infringement.

The case seems simple enough. Both brands utilize the “G” logo and signature prints with the interlocking letter. The only difference in many cases is whether you’re buying embossed leather or vinyl!

Guess reps may claim its purses are homages to the designer originals, but Gucci’s words are a lot harsher.

The brand’s lawyers say the knockoffs are “part of a sophisticated and elaborate scheme to target Gucci, to create products that are similar in appearance to the most popular and best-known Gucci products.”

Gucci is seeking damages and a court order banning Guess from using the designs in question. They’re also calling for the surrender of all bags in the firing line.

Copying has become commonplace in the fashion world, but few replicas are as high-profile as Guess’. The biggest questions are no doubt how similar the bags really are, and whether they’re damaging the Gucci brand. Whatever the outcome, this will be an interesting case to watch.

The SAK is known for its affordable yet stylish leather creations. It’s abandoned its uptown girl image here for something that’s a little more hippie-chic.

This shopper is from The SAK’s eco-friendly SakRoots line. Its hand-crocheted body is crafted from an environmentally friendly combination of bamboo and viscose yarns. The rich colors come from all natural dyes made from non-toxic, azo-free pigments. My favorite is this deep sangria red, but if you prefer something a little more subdued it’s also available in black and taupe.

The soft body is tailor-made for overstuffing, so you’ll never find yourself short on space. The crocheted fabric is lightweight, so even when it’s packed to capacity you won’t struggle. The straps have the same crocheted finish, and en extra long drop, so they’ll feel heavenly on your shoulders too. That almost sounds like a license to splurge on a few more goodies at the mall!

It’s hard to criticize an eco-friendly bag, but I have to say the look is my biggest concern here. Matt & Nat and Nahui Ollin have shown us it’s possible to create really cute green accessories. But this looks more like something my grandma would make than a designer purse. At least the $79 price tag won’t break the bank!

With all the summer weddings and events coming up, you’re going to need a workhorse clutch that will match almost anything in your closet. I present for contention the Also Dororime Clutch.

The most important thing for being able to grab it and go – it will match nearly anything and the light taupe is perfect for spring and summer.

Despite its unassuming neutrality, this bag has some statement-making stylish details. Most prominent is the front exposed-zipper pocket with a heart charm that accents the segmented design.

If you like leather, especially Aldo leather, do note that this is made of synthetic materials. That could be good for vegans or anyone concerned with spilling a little wine at the cocktail hour.

I must have missed the memo about fashion and transportation partnerships being the next big thing. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like it’s collaboration station in the luxury designer world.

Versace teamed up with Lamborghini for the Murciélago LP640 Roadster and even created a special line of men’s travel bags to complement them. Also inspired by the fusion of fashion and wheels, Chanel started with the quilted bag-adorned Segway and has now moved on to uncharted territory to create a Chanel concept car.

The brand joined forces with car designer Jinyoung Jo, from South Korea, to unveil the Chanel Fiole. The ultra streamlined design of the vehicle was “centered on simplicity of lines”, something that Coco Chanel understood well.

The coupe is black and white and features a small interior with only three seats. The real icing on the cake, though, is the double-c Chanel logo adorning the front grille. I suppose anything with that emblem is sure to be a classic.

If there is one problem with totes or hold-alls, it that is that they look bulky. Stuffed with your treasured belongings, they are full of lumps, bumps and are unattractively bulgy. This bag, however, is here to put an end to all ungraceful totes. Dior once again offer a solution to an age old problem, providing spacious and elegant carrying for all.

Large bags like this always look best with simple designs, and this is no exception. You get the cushioned and textured quilted leather in a simple square shape. Even better, you get all the luxury and fashionable look of patent leather, without being overpowered by the sheen. I’m not saying that you don’t get a lot for your money; instead I’m saying that you get just the right amount. This bag, as the three bears would say, is juuuusst right.

I am glad that Dior have decided to use to silver hardware, and have dressed up the purse with a cute logo charm. If you were worried that people wouldn’t recognize your massive investment as the label it should be, then you don’t have to fret any more. This is cute, recognizable and above all is definitely designer. It screams it from its detachable extension handle to its cute stitching, from its strong supportive shape to its heavenly fabrics.

My final point about this is the interior. Totes most often concentrate on the look of the hold-all overall, and forget the interior. Thankfully Dior seem to have realized that paying skyscraper amounts for a bag means you deserve the chic look from the outside in. Here we have a smaller softer quilted interior, that wouldn’t look out of place alongside Chanel’s timeless classics.

I’m searching for a negative point, but simply can’t find one. The price (always painful) is high, but this bag beats others of similar value hands down. And it may not the the largest tote on the market, but that is the price you pay to keep it looking so neat. It’s lovely!

Of all the Matt & Nat handbags I’ve seen, this Avril Satchel is probably the most classic design of all of them. Styles like the Fifty-Five and the Portishead both have more of a contemporary edge, but the Avril does have a hard time being completely traditional.

Although the satchel has a nice A-line shape, the little details are what set the bag apart and make it distinctly Matt & Nat. Of course, the stand-out feature of the brand is the manmade, vegan-friendly material on the brand. Here, that vegan leather is in a bright garnet red that shows off the interesting texture.

If you’re familiar with Matt & Nat’s designs, you’ll also recognize the screw-shaped studs that secure ribbed panels to the front and back of the bag. This usually adds an rocker vibe to their purses. On the Avril, though, it doesn’t seem quite as tough but rather fulfills its decorative hardware purpose of adding some interest.

The Matt & Nat signature logo plate sits on the front of the satchel right between the double handles. A sturdy base on the Avril makes it convenient for setting down, as do the metal protective feet on the bottom of the bag. The vibrant red fits right in with color trends, but you can also get the Avril in cobalt blue, bright white, or basic black.

In the 90’s, every model you ever heard of (and some that you haven’t) was head-to-toe in Michael Kors. He somehow became THE designer for chic designer basics. Not that much has changed, except his public, which is now much broader due to the success of Project Runway.

With a more diverse consumer, the MICHAEL Michael Kors line has really taken off, retail-wise, and, I think, gone downhill, quality and design-wise. What used to be chic basics have become sloppily-produced and overexposed.

This yellow patent clutch plays right into my opinion of the line. Sure it’s cute enough, but it’s more like $12.95 at Forever 21 cute than $198 top name designer cute. Honestly, it strikes me as terribly pedestrian, the sort of thing a college girl grabs for 80’s night at the local watering hole. Definitely not the stuff of supermodels.

The glossy patent is sunny and welcoming, but the production quality keeps it from looking luxurious. Notice the uneven stretching of the fabric, and the slightly irregular shape. I assure you that these details were not purposeful. The buckles on the front look a little bit edgy, but more like halloween punk edgy than anything else I can think of. At 10.5″ x 5.5″ x 1.5, it is long enough, but wide enough only for those things you might carry in a wallet, rather than a clutch. 

So, to sum things up, this is a designer clutch that is not practical, shoddily made, and badly designed. Shouldn’t we be able to expect more from Mr. Kors?

It’s made from smooth boar leather in a sunshine yellow shade, accented with straw canvas. The canvas stripe has a unique curved shape and an earthy natural tone, which contrasts with the vibrant leather. The bucket shape is traditional, even if the finish isn’t.

A hidden leather bridge fastens along the top with a snap. I love that it’s tucked away, so as not to interrupt the purse’s sunny design. But it’s not the most secure choice. Should your handbag fall, your essentials are bound to spill out.

With security compromised, I’d expect to get plenty of use of that zippered side pocket. It’s not massive, but it should be large enough for your valuable cell phone and keys. The structured shape limits storage space, but that should help you resist the temptation to carry unnecessary luxuries.

This fun bucket bag won’t weigh you down or break the bank. That cheerful yellow shade may not last you until winter, but you’ll be itching to drag it out of your closet when warmer weather returns next year!

Former Jimmy Choo designer Jonathan Kelsey has joined forces with Belvedere vodka and British soul singer Estelle to develop the Belvie bag. The limited edition purse is tailor-made for all the divas out there with its gold accents and dramatic cross-stitching details.

Estelle has the rockstar cred to pull this look off, but I’m not sure us mere mortals would be so lucky. Those accents really pop against the white leather fabric, and there are so many of them. Barely a square inch has survived unscathed. A little gold can look elegant and rich, but here there’s so much that it simply looks tacky.

If you’re brave enough to carry this handbag, I suggest pairing it with neutrals like Estelle. It’s a purse that demands to shine in the spotlight.

The $1,400 price tag seems a little exorbitant in this current financial climate, but the limited edition status is likely to inspire sales nonetheless. It’s available at Jeffrey New York and at Belvedere Black Raspberry pop-up stores in New York and Los Angeles.
