My eyes were instantly drawn to this block color B. Makowsky bag. The fresh color combination is great for this season but could work well in later months because of the dark trim.

The brown, baby blue, and light gray blend beautifully together. As always with the brand, the leather on the Portland handbag is high quality and ultra supple making it well worth its $198 price tag.

If the Portland were devoid of any metallic hardware, it could look very contemporary. However, gold-colored hardware gives this shoulder bag a classic, casual vibe and gives the stripes just a hint of a nautical feel. The carabiner detail on the front definitely adds to that effect.

It’s the kind of accessory that would look ideal with crisp, white pants and a button-down blouse. Of course, that’s not everyone’s personal style. For a striped bag that’s edgier and more modern, you might consider the Pemba Pouchette instead.

The Portland is the perfect classic with a twist style, though. It has a decent amount of storage, too, with an interior and exterior pocket. The inside is lined in B. Makowsky’s signature leopard print fabric. Look for the Portland in a larger tote or cross body bag.

Unusual shapes have always been handbag gold. Some priceless bags are shaped like miniature animals or well known landmarks, often encrusted in glitter. Personally, I once owned and loved a purse shaped exactly like a teapot! Brilliantly themed fun aside, ridiculous shapes do have less wearability than other more casual bags. This is why I suggest a subtle approach towards quirky shapes and retro design.

This disc shaped shoulder bag is just the ticket. The circular shape never goes out of fashion, and will always catch the eye of admiring passers by. It is both unusual and uncommon, but won’t shed glitter over your favourite outfits or frighten your friends!

Aside from the shape, I have another favorite feature that sets this bag apart from other retro leather purses. The interior is so functional that it is truly brilliant. Everything you need can slot into a perfectly sized compartment. It is gusseted and divided, with sections for credit cards, keys, phones, wallets and more. If practicality is your thing, you will find the leather trimmed pockets and luxury interior right up your street.

To make the practical attraction all the more powerful, Latico have realised that we are all individuals, with different body sizes and preferences. Consequently the long shoulder-strap is adjustable, allowing us to cross the bag over our bodies, or wear it drawn close… the choice is yours!

This boutique purse refers to its design as “belting”, reminiscent of hippy leather belts and metal links. The interlocking loops and spiralling pattern really draw your eye to the soft supple leather outer, and it has enough going on to keep looking good glance after glance. This glowing white feature is emphasised all the more by the delicate and neutral twill background upon which it sits. I do wish, of course, for more colorful alternatives. White is great for summer fashion, but not so good for the dark winter days!

With metallic leather and chrometone stud detailing, the Treesje London Boston Bag has style to spare. The gray color makes it more seasonally versatile than a black bag. But, is the shape as versatile?

At 16 x 8.5 x 6.5 inches it’s certainly roomy and you’ll be able fit a lot in here – a book, a water bottle – it could get pretty heavy. And when a bag can get heavy, I always think there should be a detachable shoulder strap. This bag does have handles with a generous 8.5 inch shoulder drop, but handles can rarely be totally efficient and comfortable while carrying your office around in your bag. So if you plan to use this as an everyday bag, keep that in mind.

Triple compartment zip top closures will keep everything organized for you. Makeup can all go in one section so nothing else will get damaged if something leaks. Wallet and keys can stay safe in the center and your phone, ipod and other electronics can go in the third so nothing scratches the screens.

The fashionable details are the best feature of this piece, though. In addition to all the studs and zippers, the leather has that subtle weathered look that’s so luxe and seaming in all the right places accents the shape of the bag.

Miss Sixty has unveiled its Spring/Summer 09 Lookbook with tons of handbags in punchy-bright colors. Seen above are two looks from the collection: a medium-sized silver clutch with a pink and black butterfly embellishment on the flap and a bright yellow over-sized shoulder bag.

Other pieces include a large, rich brown leather drawstring bag with lace-like circle details, a simple white clutch and a red shoulder bag with a ruffle silhouette and fringe. The styles would provide a great pop of color to a more neutral outfit.

The brand is definitely on-trend with bright colors that will draw the eye of summer shoppers. The large and oversize silhouettes may prove impractical to a recession buyer, though.

But, Miss Sixty is on top of that, too. The brand recently did a cost reanalysis and as a result lowered all their prices a bit. So maybe their over-sized bags will still have regular-sized prices. Here’s hoping!

Elie Tahari takes patent leather from the dance floor to the shopping mall with the Rory Shopper.

The glossy black fabric is usually a glammed up affair, but I’m not sure it really works here. The shiny patent body doesn’t look too difference at a glance from a common garbage bag. The fabric may be more luxurious than cheap plastic, but it really doesn’t look like it.

This tacky exterior is dressed up by some chic tortoise-shell handles. This is a curious choice too. The look is flawlessly retro, but I’m sure they’d hurt my hands. Can you imagine carrying those handles if the Rory was full to the brim with bargain buys? Long, wide patent leather straps would have been much more user-friendly.

At least Elie Tahari gets it right inside. The generous interior can easily carry a full day’s shopping. A cotton lining is a practical touch. I suppose Elie had to think of functionality at least once!

The Rory has a unique look, but ultimately the elements don’t quite gel. If you’re after a shopper to actually shop, this probably won’t be it.

Take one look at Bulga’s other bag styles compared to this new Bulgaette Clutch, and you’ll most likely be as confused as I am about it.

It’s just the sort of retro print and light-hearted design I’d expect from a designer like Emilio Pucci, but this clutch doesn’t scream typical Bulga to me like the label’s other leather numbers like Butterfly Bag and De Beber Satchel.

Despite it’s lack of what I consider signature Bulga style, the Bulgaette is one of the cutest, quirkiest clutches I’ve seen in a while. I’m really digging on the bold sixties mod print. It has an undeniable vintage quality, as if you scored it after days of vintage shop-hopping.

One of the Bulgaette’s details that does fit right in with many of Bulga’s current designs is the addition of silver studs along the border of the front flap. I also like how the stark white leather contrasts with the vibrant colors of the satin body.

Because of its diminutive size, the Bulgaette Clutch is one of the most affordable Bulga’s I’ve seen, ringing in at only $125. It’s not the kind of bag you’ll carry often, but you’re bound to get plenty of compliments when you do.

It’s obvious that Tory Burch is successful in her work life. The American designer’s clothes and bags have been flying off the shelves since she opened shop several years ago.

However, it is a pleasant surprise to learn that this highly-demanded designer, who has earned some well-deserved respect in the fashion world, has her priorities in the right order. Tory recently sat down with Stylelist.com to discuss how she balances running a global brand and mothering six (yes, that’s six) kids.

When it comes to staying sane with the demands of her three young sons and three stepdaughters, she says it’s all about time management.

My children come first and then everything falls into place around them. I love working, but being a mother is my priority.

They really have gone the whole distance on this sparkling beauty – the highly shimmering silver is highlighted and reflected by the luminous gems. The kitsch chest shape design harps back to the similar and iconic Versace Cluch, just with supercharged bling!

This is yet another updated and on-trend interpretation of a classic, a particular talent of La Regale’s.  It is an evening bag with attitude, designed to suit the most luxurious and elegant of occasions. With this sort of crystal on your arm, any red carpet will welcome you and you’ll have enough room for keys and money. You can even fit in a phone in order to ring up your friends and boast about your beautiful bag! To make your life easier, you have a long practical handle that can be hidden away when in front of the A-listers.

My hesitation? I struggle to see the long term success of a pricey bag coming from a not-so-pricey designer. No catwalk model or film star would see it as a serious attempt at luxury, purely because of it’s name. This may sound shallow, but all expensive bags rely on the name that goes with them – otherwise we wouldn’t pay such a markup. This brand just may not cut the super-brand mustard.

Conversely, if you aren’t bothered about brandnames, then this is a gorgeous and eye-catching bag. Just be careful to check if any of their cheaper models would do the job just as well, normally for less than $200!

When you’re combining retro and modern styles to create something new, your reference point has to be spot on. And with the mother of American sportswear and Coach accessories Bonnie Cashin at the heart of The Bonnie Collection, Coach tapped into an inspiration worth exploring.

The Olive Frame Bag seen here is a stand-out piece from the line for Spring 09. Fashion-wise it combines vintage frame bag elements with modern details like a leather-accented chain strap and zipper details you might not have seen during the style’s heyday.

Plus, the color combo is at once fresh and reminiscent. Seafoam pairs with lime here, and other colorways include coral/fuchsia and chalk/navy. These colors would have been used for frame bags in the ’50s or ’60s but maybe not in these combinations.  It’s another nod to Cashin that the combinations are so bold.

The practical side of the bag is just as innovative. Remove the chain strap and fold the top over to carry this bag as a clutch. So chic. The leather is lightweight – in heft and look – and perfect for spring and summer.

As fantastic a piece of handbag history as this is, it’s certainly not going to go with every wardrobe or every lifestyle. Frame bags are notoriously impractical and despite updates like a zip-out expandable bottom, you’re not going to be able to fit everything you would in a hobo through that silver-clasped frame top. It’s form over function, I’m afraid.

Is it a bowler bag or is it a satchel? Charles David keeps us guessing with this unique designer bag.

But it’s not just the Mackenzie’s shape that’s bound to turn heads. Snake-print leather swatches are stitched together to create an eye-catching patchwork design. It creates a look that’s less unified than a traditional python print, the kind that makes us stop and take a second peek. The brown and tan shades are muted, so the look isn’t quite as outlandish as it sounds. Yet it’s bound to have its critics, so it seems curious that a more subdued single-color version isn’t available.

A wrap-around top zip offers wide-open access to the luxuriously sized interior space. Something this roomy takes some effort to keep organized, but there are plenty of zip and slip pockets to help us out.

I can’t imagine wanting to lug around such a large bag every day, particularly when the handles are so short. But I can imagine the Mackenzie would make an excellent travelling companion for my next getaway!
