So far, I have been totally in love with every single bag in the new Marc Jacobs Collection for Summer. The theme of the season is something like “uptown girl on safari”. The combinations of unusual colors and textures have been ingenious and perfect. 

But, honestly, I’m not loving this one. Wait. That’s not exactly true. I love it for Grace Jones in a Kamali silk pantsuit in 1983, but other than that, it just seems a little costume-y. 

That being said, there are a lot of things that I do like about the bag. The simple drawstring shape is the perfect choice for showcasing a fabulous exotic material. And the material is, indeed, fabulous, a luxurious calf hair printed with zebra stripes as bold and striking as I have ever seen. And the tassels are a lovely touch of color against the fabric.

So, what is it that I don’t like? Well, for one thing, I just don’t think a drawstring pouch is the most durable or practical choice for most women everyday. They shapelessness can be intriguing, but in my experience, it’s really hard to stay organized in a handbag with no shape. And I also don’t love the strap. I mean, the balance between the hugeness of the bag and the slimness of the strap looks lovely, but who wants to carry that scrawny scrap of a strap around when the pouch is heavy and full? Not me.

So, on the one hand, I really like the look of the bag, but I just don’t see it working out for many women.

In addition to this very Tory Burch orange, the bag comes in sunny yellow, pretty pink, cobalt blue. And, yes, for the less adventurous, there’s even black. In all honestly, the black is probably your best bet bet for an everyday work tote, which this would be great for.

Matthew Williamson fans have more reasons to rejoice than just the designer’s second collection for H&M launching this week. His online store is now open as well!

“We wanted to launch the online store to offer easier access to collections for our customers. Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard impressed in the Eiffel Tower Lady Dior ad campaign this past winter, and now she’s back at it again with something a little different.

This time, she’s utilizing her highly respected acting skills for Dior’s new mini movie, entitled The Lady Noire Affair. The six-minute film makes it debut on LadyDior.com next Wednesday, May 20.

From the online preview, it looks like we can expect plenty of mysterious people, kidnappings, and other scenes similar to a 1940s spy thriller like Ingrid Bergman’s Notorious. I can’t help but see the similarities between the two. Dior’s version, of course, will also feature plenty of fabulous handbags for us to envy.

“We wanted to capture the glamour, the intrigue, the heroine and the mysterious allure that radiates around her,” said John Galliano, Dior’s creative director. “Marion has brought the Dior woman to life. She is incredible.”

Those woven handbags we’ve been coveting needn’t cost the earth. Forget about Bottega Veneta and their exorbitantly priced purses for a second and feast your eyes on the Marrakesh Hobo from Elliott Lucca.

The Marrakesh’ intricate woven exterior is every bit as impressive as the big name designer purses. The hobo lives up to its exotic name with a fun and flirty tassel accent. Unlike most hobos, there’s not a lot of slouch to be seen. The structured look lends itself to more formal occasions. Perhaps it wouldn’t suit a red carpet, but you’ll definitely look the part at any chic restaurant.

That structured finish does compromise storage space somewhat. The Marrakesh is nice and wide, but it’s got the sort of slender design which looks great but prohibits bulky cargo. You probably won’t need to leave any essentials behind, but you may need to use your Tetris skills to fit them inside.

The Marrakesh retails for a budget friendly $198. I’ve seen cheaper woven bags, but few utilize genuine leather. The price is impressive, but the color may turn shrinking violets off. Copper dares to be different. While other metallics like gold, silver, and pewter are almost considered neutrals these days, copper is a little brighter and bolder. I love the unexpected pop it provides, but I know many won’t agree with me. Sadly Elliott Lucca hasn’t considered the critics, because copper is the only color available.

Kenneth Cole has been working hard since he started his fashion label in 1982. The designer is now planning to focus on specific areas of developing the brand and bring in a new creative mind to join the team.

Former Hugo Boss employee, Ingo Wilts, is stepping in to fill the new creative director position. Wilts arrives with years of experience in the design world and new ideas for expanding the brand. “He is very creative, but he also understands the intricacies and the realities of the business,” Cole told WWDof Wilts. “He understands womenswear, menswear and accessories. Ingo has successfully helped navigate the growth of the Hugo Boss business over the last 10 years, globally and effectively.”

The incoming creative director will begin his new role with Kenneth Cole this August. Cole himself will continue a vital presence in the company as he continues as chairman and chief creative officer.

Be still, my beating heart. The new Marc Jacobs Collection accessories for Summer have me feeling faint. Despite economic hard times, Mr. Jacobs has combined some of the most striking and luxurious materials on the planet in this exciting new line.

The traditional shape of the stam bag looks amazing in this ingenious combination of colors and textures. Purple snakeskin has been woven with contrasting metallic strands of green and red leather to create the material. Honestly, I have just never seen anything like it, and I mean that in the best way possible. 

Although the Memphis Stam combines cutting edge design techniques, the effect is absolutely ladylike. The colors of the bag set of the gold toned hardware gorgeously, and I am completely won over by the combination of the dual rolled snakeskin handles with the removable chain link shoulder strap. The kiss lock closure and the charms dangling from the front exterior pocket are quirky and loveable touches.

Overall, I think this bag is so ingeniously designed that I have a hard time finding anything wrong with it. Except that, while I adore the look of the huge chain shoulder strap, I think its probably not the most comfortable strap out there. The generous 17″ x 9″ x 8.5″ size is big enough to accommodate the belongings of almost any woman.

With offerings like the Memphis Stam, I can’t wait to see more from the new Marc Jacobs Collection.
