If a regular canvas beach bag is just too boring for you, then you’re bound to fall in love with Betsey Johnson’s “pimped out” version.

The Betsey’s Showgirls Tote provides an interesting spin on a nautical-inspired, striped handbag. Where you might expect to see navy blue stripes, Betsey Johnson has instead replaced them with rows of shiny gold sequins. It’s an unexpected combination of super girly and sporty at the same time.

Flashy and unexpected is what Betsey Johnson does best though. Occasionally her designs are a tad too gaudy for my personal taste, but I like the Showgirls Tote. Despite this one’s attempt to be completely unique, a striped canvas tote can’t help but be a little simple, though this one can hardly be deemed basic.

The other options for the colored stripes, purple and pink, are a bit much for me, however. I much prefer the gold sequins with light brown leather trim. The Betsey’s Showgirls bag is lined in the signature Betsey Johnson lace-printed lining and retails for $185.

JJ Winters handbags are a celeb favorite from Paris Hilton to Miley Cyrus. Another famous fan, Vanessa Hudgens, was recently seen carrying this JJ Winters Suede Zip Bag in brown.

This bag has a strong trendy style and you shouldn’t expect to carry it with the same aplomb next year. But if you like an accessory that immediately identifies of the current season, this is a great option. It takes the ubiquitous zipper detail one step further, and avoids veering too far into punk style with a bohemian silhouette and soft suede fabrication.

The calf suede bag features 11 gold zippers on the body and two on the straps, and a roomy interior with one inner pocket. A comfortable 18″ strap drop means you can really fill this up and lug it around.

I find it interesting that the back of this bag is plain with no zippers. Perhaps that would let you tone down the style if you purposely wore it with the zippers against your body. I would find it annoying to be constantly aware of which side of the bag was showing, whether I wanted to zippers showing or not.

There comes a time when every girl needs a bigger bag. Whether for a weekend away or to hold all your folders, sometimes the cute and trendy purses just don’t cut it. Instead, I suggest you go for a bowler bag, which gives you high fashion in combination with high functionality.

This bag is one of my favorites on the market. First off, I am impressed that such a kitsch and good looking hold-all comes in at under the $300 mark. Secondly, it is successfully channelling the vintage bowling look without looking either twee or out-dated. This, my friends, is a delicate balancing act, and one that many designers get terribly wrong.

So what makes this bag so successful, other than extensive space? It has plenty of pockets – your phone will have a compartment, as will your keys, wallet and more. As a fashionable accessory, the outer pocket is highlighted in vintage style by a curved section of black patent, that coordinates with the long flexible hands and reinforced corners.  Surprisingly, this hold-all is in a very soft leather, and the interior is in ribbed cotton which coordinates brilliantly.

This is yet another lovely example of Italian craftsmanship, and would do you proud on a weekend away. From the over-sized silver hardware to the off-white color, this bag is a sound investment.

Why blend into the background when you can be bold, and brassy? That’s the philosophy of the Harpo Lunch Tote by Guess, a bag which doesn’t do subtle.

This purse is a satiny synthetic covered in eye-catching cheetah spots. If the animal print wasn’t wild enough, it’s paired with bright red handles. The other Harpos aren’t a lot tamer. How does sand colored python sound, or raspberry crocodile print? Even the plain colored totes are loud, in vibrant orange and hot pink shades.

The synthetic fabrics aren’t exactly luxurious, but they keep the price down to a measly $45. The material may not be as chic as leather, but it should survive daily errands or life in a casual office environment. There’s certainly enough practical space to keep pace with your fast-paced lifestyle. Four interior pockets are more than I’d expect, and a real bonus for girls that love their gadgets. That’s one for your iPod, one for your cell phone, one for a PDA, and one left over for small change! If the handles were just a little longer I’d say Guess had produced one practical package!

While many of us are tightening our belts and spending less in these tough economic times, rich fashionistas like Victoria Beckham are still living the high life. A new report suggests the former Spice Girls’ collection of the status handbags is worth a whopping £1.5 million.

Apparently the artist formerly known as Posh Spice has 100 of the iconic handbags, which retail for $6,000 and $7,000. Of course, that’s just your run of the mill Birkin. Victoria’s favorites are made from more exotic skins like ostrich, crocodile, and alligator.

It’s easy to point fingers at self-absorbed celebs like Victoria, who prefer to spend money filling their closets than clothing the homeless. But I’m sure I’m not the only one who drools over those photos of Posh proudly carrying her latest purse purchase!

Hobo International has paired vintage styling with a mod sensibility to create this surprising Morgan shoulder bag.

The front flap compartment, with its large button detail and laid-back slouch, is straight out of the sixties. But the kiss-lock compartment and delicate shoulder strap hark back further than that, giving the purse a surprising vintage twist. The two styles could so easily clash, but strangely they seem almost at home together here.

The two compartments are perfect for keeping your life in order. The flap section has space for your cell phone and keys, while the back has more pockets and pouches for pens and a few more gadgets. There’s also a handy zippered pocket for stashing spare change and valuables.

The dainty shoulder strap might add to the Morgan’s vintage charm, but I can’t help having reservations about it. If you fill this purse, such a skinny strap is bound to dig into your shoulder, or worse. It may be high-quality leather, but I’m not certain such a narrow strap is built to last everyday wear!

Well, the expensive and ostentatious community projects just keep coming. Possibly in attempt to upstage Prada’s $10 million Transformer structure, Louis Vuitton has revealed something even more conspicuous.

The luxury brand has teamed with American artist Richard Prince for a new installation at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. As crazy as it sounds, the museum has been wrapped entirely in “enlarged replicas of pulp fiction novel covers.” It’s a familiar pairing since Prince previously worked with Marc Jacobs for the Big City After Dark and Monogram Joke Louis Vuitton handbag lines.

Inside the museum, however, the spotlight is on the fashion label with a soon-to-be-unveiled exhibit entitled “Louis Vuitton: A Passion for Creation”, which will run from May 22 to August 9. Click here to see photos of the flashy Hong Kong building.

Ah, Prada. It is a brand name that inspires lust and dreamy sighs in nearly all budding fashionistas. Without fail, its designs are crisp, clean and classic; simple enough to last not only for seasons, but for generations.

This large leather tote is no exception. They had no need to overdress the sumptuous leather and simple minimalist silhouette. Keeping it pure, white and elegant serves to emphasize the luxurious materials and the superior design. Here you have a spacious hold-all that doesn’t shout about its high-fashion origins, but instead murmurs delicately!

My only hesitation is that for your money, this bag doesn’t offer much in terms of extras. You have the space and the style, but only one interior pocket. I wonder if you could get a similar bag for less that abounds in practicality?

This isn’t much of a downside though. Prada has been more than generous with the space, giving you massive 14″ by 12″ dimensions. The hold-all also features adjustable handles and the obligatory Prada logo plate. I believe that once you fall in love with a purse like this, you fall hard and deep. You may never need a tote like this again!

Versace has always been the line of choice for high class beach-going babes from Miami to the Amalfi coast. The line’s sleek body conscious designs paired with their luxurious blinged out accessories just have an air of endless summer about them. 

Including this Kayla Perforated Tote, which is somehow simultaneously a practical beach bag, and a high-end designer piece. Okay, so maybe describing this bag as a practical beach bag is a little bit of an exaggeration, due to the sumptuous perforated calfskin, but it will definitely hold everything from SPF to chick lit to a change of clothes. 

The tote’s material is a perforated pearlized calfskin over another layer of fabric with crystal and gold details, guaranteed to sparkle in the sun. The gathered leather handles are thick enough to be comfortable, and sleek enough to be beautiful, although I’m not crazy about the gold toned bracelets. The flap top has a magnetic closure to protect your valuables when you prance off to take a dip. 

This bag has “sipping mojitos by the pool” written all over it, but, frankly, I’m not sure what else it would be good for. At 13″x 12″ x 5″, It’s a little unwieldy as a shopper, and too ostentatious for the office. And at $2, 960, this is one beach tote that lacks mass market reachability. It’s definitely for the woman who already has every other handbag she needs, and just wants something special to stow her bikini in.

Lauren Merkin is the queen of clutches, at least according to me. The designer has an undeniable knack for creating just the right size and shape for whatever event a gal’s got.

The recently released Tatum handbag is a perfect example. Similar to but less formal than the Lucy clutch, the Tatum is the ideal accessory for times you want to look snazzy and stylish but not overdressed.

Though available in many different colors and textures, I’m having some serious shopping cravings over the Tatum in this variegated raffia material. The woven blend of taupes, creams, and grays is absolutely superb. It’s just right to pair with outfits for dinner parties, bridal showers, and other semi-casual events.

This framed Lauren Merkin clutch is a decent size, even if it isn’t oversized like so many other clutches today. The interior is lined in the brand’s signature striped material and contains one zippered pocket.
