Well, it’s certainly no Chanel handbag. However, the Big Buddha Miranda is worth a look if you’re seeking a quilted purse with fewer numbers on the price tag.

At only $80, shoppers won’t be experiencing any sticker shock with this satchel. Of course, an affordable price like that means less than luxurious materials used. The Miranda has more than one faux feature. It is leather-like with a fake ostrich texture.

If you aren’t expecting designer quality, though, this Big Buddha bag won’t disappoint. The combination of quilted stitching with a dash of ostrich texture is really quite unique. It’s not something you see very often, yet it comes across as classic and even slightly neutral in this camel color.

The woven rope-like handles are an interesting detail as well, though I’m not sure how comfortable they would be. Thankfully, Big Buddha also endowed the Miranda with a longer shoulder strap for practicality. Look for this manmade handbag in black, beige, fuchsia, and lime green as well the camel color shown here.

Okay, I have a confession to make. I hate Juicy Couture. I hated those terrycloth sweatsuits, the shorts with words all over the butt, and when they came out with their accessories line, I hated the rhinestones everywhere and the ubiquity of their logo. But, all that being said, I love this bag!

The stark white of the smooth grained leather is enhanced by the seam details that follow the sleek lines of the bowler shape beautifully. The 11″ x 10″ x 6″ size is perfect for carrying all the day’s essentials without overloading you. It’s large enough to accomodate your wallet, PDA, and a good sized cosmetics case with ease.

The O-ring and leather details around the straps are a great touch. They bring a little extra attitude to this very sleek accessory. On one side, there is a small outer pouch pocket (perfect for your cell), and on the other hangs a variety of chains, a logo charm, and a leather tassel that create a balanced look.

The rolled leather dual handles are made for comfortable hand holding, although with only a 6″ drop, I’m not sure how comfortable it will be on your shoulder. Given the width of the bag, holding it so close to your body may be uncomfortable.

I am so surprised by how much I like this Juicy Couture bowler that I checked the label twice, and I’m still sure it’s Juicy. This may be exactly the kind of classy new bag that helps the brand cross over to a new audience.

The Sak, best known for crochet handbags sold at department stores like Macy’s and Dillard’s, is adding two new brands to its portfolio for Fall 09.

The company has been reinventing itself as more fashion-forward for a few years now, an effort which has included the addition of the more upscale Elliot Lucca collection. Now The Sak will be adding Free Bird and Lina on the lower end. Both lines will be crafted entirely of PVC.

“We’re bringing our textural heritage into PVC and engaging a more fashion-forward customer. PVC doesn’t have to be so plasticlike, it can be cool and hip and it can feel great,” said CEO Mark Talucci.

Both lines are targetted at a younger shopper. Free Bird will range in price from $50 to $100 and be sold at The Sak’s usual department stores. Stylistically the bags will be focused on details like handstitching and hardware. The line’s logo will be a Native American dream catcher icon, to highlight the brand’s spiritual message.

To be aimed at retail locations like Kohl’s and J.C. Penney, Lina will be sold at even more affordable price points in the under $60 range.

While the Elliot Lucca line has definitely improved The Sak’s fashion image, I’m not sure how going all-synthetic and lower market is going to help the company secure a reputation for being fashion-forward.

I am glad this bag is so simple. It is nice to know what you are getting and to have no high expectations that are disappointed once the bag is in your possession.

Here you have a simple and attractive clutch that does what it says on the bottle: Bright sexy colors, suitable interior pockets, and nothing to worry about.

As with many Hobo bags, there is a consistent level of quality materials. The leather is soft and luxurious, the zipper neatly colored to keep with the theme. You can also expect a good degree of wear and tear – handled carefully, this clutch could last for a good few seasons.

However, if hot trends are your thing then don’t get too worried. The bright turquoise blue of the elegant patent leather exterior is bang on the current color blocking trend. Pair this with a cute 60’s shift dress or bold contrasting shade, and you couldn’t be more high fashion if you tried.

It gets even better, the interior lining of this bright turquoise fold-over clutch is in two fashionably contrasting shades: Directly inside is an attractive black and white hounds-tooth fabric lining. Then take a peek under the fold of the purse and there’s a glossy yellow-gold shade that contrasts directly with the bold aquamarine color on the outside.

This clutch from Hobo International is also available in several other bold colors including a sun-bright yellow, poppy red, shiny white, a darker garnet brown and traditional black. Whatever the exterior color of the bag, bold and contrasting colors appear on the inside.

The downsides? You don’t get much space although you probably aren’t expecting much room anyway, otherwise you’d be choosing an oversized handbag with massive dimensions and the advantage of handles. Even so, it’s easy to forget to look past the minimalistic design and assess your specific needs; can this bag really carry your evening survival kit?

In addition, the minimalist design, while fashionable, gives the bag a level of blandness that fails to portray it’s designer quality. One woman’s minimalist is another woman’s no frills and at first glance this could be mistaken for a bag from Ikea!

Other that this nitpicking the bag is affordable and cool available for $150 and under. I would really recommend it to anyone who appreciates a minimalist and functional clutch.

B. Makowsky delivers another exotically named purse in the Copenhagen. It might not be Paris or Milan, but this fashion-forward handbag holds its own.

The traditional tone shape is spiced up with a smattering of polished gold hardware and glossy patent accents. There’s a large flap pocket up front, which draws the eye and gives us a practical place to stash our car keys.

A magnetic closure is hidden away, and it’s a good thing too. There’s so much hardware up front that a zipper or clasp could easily upset the balance. Pop it open to reveal another hidden secret: the wild leopard print lining. The ample space comes with all the zip and slip pockets you need to stay organized.

But not all Copenhagen totes are created equally. The basic black and white styles offer a unified look, but the multicolored bags are less convincing. They pay homage to the colorblock trend, but the combination of shades never quite gels.

Betsey Johnson is no shrinking violet, and that’s probably an understatement. When the spunky and popular designer has something to say, she usually just speaks her thoughts.

That’s exactly what happened when she decided that company needs to design a diffusion line. When approached by New York Magazine at the DKMS Gala the other evening, Johnson came right out with her idea.

“Hello! I’m ready. You know, QVC, HSN, whatever it’s called, yeah, I am ready for that,” Johnson told us at the DKMS gala last night. “I love volume, and as long as it can be fun and really me, I think it would work now,” she added.

It’s no secret that diffusion lines by big names like Isaac Mizrahi and Alexander McQeen at retail giant Target have done very well. Even Christian Siriano has worked with Payless Shoes for a collection.

If a budget-friendly line of Betsey Johnson designs makes it way into affordable retailers’ hands, I’d most definitely predict some of that volume that Johnson craves for her company. Lots and lots of volume.

Be & D generally has the market cornered on ultra-feminine, luxury designer handbags, in my opinion. The girly ruffles of the chic and expensive Chatterley and Kan Kan purses are proof of that.

I suppose that signature style is why I could hardly believe that this brown, somewhat bohemian-looking bag came from Be & D. It’s just not what I typically expect to see from the label. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised by the style, though, since it turns out to be very similar to the Cosette Hobo. Either way, it’s a welcome change.

Instead of frilly and elegant ruffles, the Catalina Hobo boasts an intricate pattern of woven brown and ivory leather. The result is unique and eyecatching yet somehow simple when paired with solid panels flanking either side of the patterned section.

Lest we mistake the Catalina for the design of another brand, Be & D made sure to add a hint of ruffling to the handles for a slightly feminine touch. Ruching is probably a more accurate description of the feature since it can hardly be compared to the more ostentatious and obvious ruffling of the Kan Kan.   

True to its luxury label pricing, the Catalina retails for a whopping $1,580, which is sure to be out of reach for many budgets. For a much more affordable boho-style hobo bag, you might try the Jessica Simpson Dreamcatcher instead.

The opposite of minimalism is called maximalism, and this is what it looks like. I’m honestly surprised that this look is coming to us from Marc Jacobs, as his designs are usually a little cleaner and more pared down, but I am delighted nonetheless. I have seen a lot of “ethnic” inspired boho designs lately, but this is on the more interesting side of new.

The gathered multiple flap top is composed of mustard suede, blue snakeskin, and zebra printed calfskin. This is not a combination I would have thought of, but the result is lovely. It strikes a precarious balance of textures and colors that is absolutely intriguing, and, I think, quite lovely.

The pouch shape of the bag really suits the style, and is lined entirely in smooth grained leather. The back of the front flaps feature metallic leather linings, a small luxurious detail for the afficianado. I’m not always a fan of dangling charms, but I like the ornately designed leather tassels hangng from the side. They complement the asymmetry of the bg beautifully.

The guitar strap inspired shoulder strap is a touch that I am not entirely sure about. One part of me loves this additional texture, and another part thinks that maybe a simpler leather strap would have been sufficient. In any case, this is definitely not a bag for the faint of heart, but I think it will find a lot of fans, anyhow.
