It might seem overly basic, but this small hobo is just the type of functional handbag that we women latch onto and wear with just about everything.

Though small in size, the Elliott Lucca Padova Demi is perfect for typical purse necessities. You won’t be able to carry around nearly every posession you own, as with so many oversized totes these days. However, the interior is no smaller than what most of us expect from a practical handbag and maybe even a little roomier than you’d think because of its slouchy design.

In this brown, slightly pebbled leather, the Padova Demi is concurrently classic and casual. It’s not a showstopper by any means, but it’s certainly sensible, which might not attract everyone but definitely appeals to most.

My favorite detail of this Elliott Lucca handbag is the ruched bottom panel that helps create the relaxed body. The single braided shoulder strap with attached tassels is a nice addition, too. They’re the kind of features that keep the Padova Demi from being too boring or simple. This hobo bag retails for $168.

Lanvin is one of those lines that, for generations, has been creating heirloom-worthy garments that women love to wear. Same goes for their accessories line, which is a collector’s favorite.

This classic and sophisticated Reporter Bag is ever so slightly less than what I have come to expect from Lanvin, honestly. Or maybe I should say that it’s a little bit more than what I have come to expect from the line? In other words, I think this bag is lovely, but somewhat overdesigned.

The rectangular shape is the perfect showcase for the front patent zip pocket that perfectly replicates the shape of the bag itself. I love the way the gold-toned hardware sets off the textures of the bag, and I adore the grosgrain ribbon entwined through the chain strap.

Taken separately, I like almost all of the details. The big floppy bow adds another layer of texture that is really intriguing, but between the bow, the ribbon threaded chain, the logo medallion, the patent leather, and the exposed zipper, frankly, I’m just a little confused about where to look.

All in all, this is a classy bag with a lot of interesting details. I’m just not convinced that the bag needs all of them.

This adorable spotted Sonia Kashuk cosmetics case is the epitome of cheap and cheerful.

Like so many luxury labels, Burberry has felt the sting of the economic crisis, posting a £6 million loss for the last financial year. The loss stemmed from the cost of writing down the value of its Spanish stores, and charges for staff layoffs.

But it’s not all bad news for the British brand. Its sales are up 21%, as fashion fans flock to its iconic accessories.

“An accessory – a bag or shoe – is a more spontaneous purchase than apparel,” explained Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s creative director. “It’s not as big of a commitment.”

The company’s signature plaid pattern has been subtly revamped in its latest fashion items that are contemporary, yet timeless.

In the 1990s the plaid print was splashed over so many products it risked over exposure. The brand shied away from the design for a while, but now it’s back in creative ways, such as a suede purse where the plaid pattern peeks through a mesh exterior.

“It’s very intentional,” Burberry chief executive Angela Ahrendts explained. “Now we’re coming back with a renewed strategic use of the branding platform.”

“In this market, people want the reassurance of a familiar brand,” added Mr. Bailey.

By returning to its iconic plaid prints, Burberry’s giving its loyal customers just that. The brand now hopes to further boost its accessory sales and expand into growth markets, including the United States. These efforts will receive a boost next week when Burberry opens its new headquarters in New York.

“America is still one of the toughest markets,” said Ms. Ahrendts. “But it’s not getting worse, and we are not seeing the volatility and strong declines anymore. The business opportunities are probably better than they have ever been.”

Of course, this kind of luxury never comes cheap. Most of us will have to think long and hard before spending more than $1500 on a purse that’s strictly an after five affair. But it’s so gorgeous that I’m tempted nonetheless!

Ugh, this is exactly why I hate Juicy Couture. Pardon me if this bag is up your alley, but I can think of so many better ways to spend $190 that I can’t imagine why anyone would spend it on this.

First of all, this bag is made of terrycloth, which, as far as I’m concerned is only suitable for towels and sometimes beach rompers. But for a bag? I can’t think of anything less durable (maybe aluminum foil?) or more likely to hold stains. The color is the trademark Juicy Couture pink, which I like just fine in a sophisticated fabric, but honestly, I’m having a really hard time looking past the terrycloth.

And, by the way, could this bag have a bigger logo? It covers more than half of the front of the bag! Seriously, it might as well be a tattoo. If I didn’t hate the cheap looking dangly charms so much, I might be grateful for how much of the logo they obscure, but as it is, I just find the whole thing an explosion of cheesy sweatshop labor crap.

Really, I don’t know who they’re kidding selling this stuff in high end stores. This is the kind of fare you expect from tween boutiques, but, unfortunately, you can find this bag at a high end retailer near you. Admittedly, Juicy Couture has never really been to my taste, but with a lot of their things I can at least see why another woman might buy it. This I think is tasteless and aesthetically offensive.

There’s nothing particularly unique about the Macee Hobo. It’s not as if Nine West’s version of the hobo handbag is very different than other contemporary takes on the style.

Unoriginality aside, however, the Medium Macee is not a bad choice for an everyday bag with some nice details and a decently sized interior. The cinched top is decorated with delicate gold-toned studs, as are the two side pockets of the purse which have a smattering of the feature.

A tassel embellishment hangs from one of the handle rings that attach the single strap to the bag. For a more functional rather than decorative detail, this Nine West hobo’s single handle is adjustable for a slightly customized strap.

The leather is synthetic, which is to be expected on most inexpensive purses. This Medium Macee is very affordable, though, making it more attractive to many shoppers. At $85, you might even pick up one in each option: blue, brown, and this ivory color. Look for it in a larger shopper handbag as well.
