Marc Jacobs does bright leather accessories like no other designer. Somehow they manage to be both trend-setting and modern, but also classic and ladylike. And this gorgeous new Fleet bag is definitely in keeping with that particular Marc Jacobs tradition.

The shape is so classic it’s almost retro. It reminds me of the cordovan leather Aigner bag that my grandmother carried in the 70’s and 80’s. My grandmother, though, never rocked the bag in grape colored crinkle patent leather. The contrast between the very conservative character of the bag and the shockingly bright color makes it absolutely fabulous.

The top flap of the bag fastens with the signature Marc Jacobs closure, which, in silver tone, complements the cool purple hue of the bag beautifully. The leather strap is nice and wide, just how I like them, and it fastens to the bag with adorable oversized silver-tone and grape enamel buttons.

This is a great bag for edgy women looking for a little more ladylike touch, or a lady looking to add a punch of color to her wardrobe.

We might be used to hearing the names Chanel, Valentino, and Versace when it comes to acclaimed handbag designers, but Handbag Designer 101 will be awarding some of the best unknowns in the purse world with their annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards.

The finalists for this year’s awards ceremony have been named. The categories include Best Student Made Handbag, Best Handmade Handbag, Best Green Handbag, Most Socially Responsible Handbag, and Best Handbag in Overall Style and Design. They’ve even added a shoe design category this year.

Some of the student made bags are impressive, especially one rounded tote by 22-year old Susan Jina Lee of Movement. Other standout designs in the list of finalists include the Canopy Verde “Freesia” from the “Best Green” finalists and Brenda Zheng’s handmade Peacock Shoulder Bag.

Cole Haan sure knows how to do a triangular-shaped handbag. We’ve seen them construct this style of bag in everything from nylon to their signature leather Genevieve weave.

It’s impressive, really, for the brand to have so many various, uncompeting looks in the same style. I suppose they want to make sure you need one for every occasion, whether it be sporty or summer casual. For the slightly less than casual event, though, Cole Haan has provided yet another triangle tote in the Raleigh Small.

Because of the Raleigh’s subtle off-white leather body, it isn’t a showpiece handbag like the Plaid Genevieve. However, it will stand out on its own accord mostly because it is entirely one color.

I can imagine transitioning the pebbled leather Raleigh from warmer seasons to cooler ones. For now, it would look pretty and carefree when paired with light, summery colors or florals, but it could look equally chic as a winter white accessory when cold weather hits.

The Raleigh Small Triangle Tote has a pair of braided handles with an engraved logo plate hanging from one side. When purchasing this Cole Haan style, however, you might be surprised to find that you’re getting a set. The Raleigh comes with a matching leather zippered pouch that attaches inside the tote. Two well-crafted, designer bags for $348 sounds like a good deal to me.

If you adore the oversized trend, you’ll fall head over heels for Bulga’s big and beautiful Adore.

The chic curves of the domed design are mirrored in the soft decorative seams. They provide the main focal point, along with the gleaming silver-toned nameplate. It subtly spells out the Bulga name without overwhelming the design.

As you’d expect from an oversized purse, there’s space for much more than essentials inside. The luxurious space is lined with practical plainweave fabric sporting an artistic signature print. The pockets will work overtime to keep you organized, so they’re trimmed with leather to last. The built-in ball-clasp change purse is a decidedly vintage touch for this contemporary handbag. I’m not quite sure why it works, but somehow it does.

My only gripe is with those teeny-tiny handles. With a drop of just 4.5 inches, they’re never going to sit over your shoulder. And you’re bound to struggle carrying this hefty purse by hand. A longer shoulder or cross-body strap would have allowed us to enjoy, rather than agonize, over the Adore’s size.

Australian firefighters saved a young woman from a major fashion disaster this weekend. The men went to extreme measures to rescue a clutch purse dropped down a drain in the Northern Territory capital of Darwin.

The six firefighters tore up part of the Peel Street walkway to retrieve the woman’s beloved purse.

Darwin Fire Watch Commander David Letheby said the unusual rescue mission was all in a day’s work.

“It was a community service,” he explained. “They were available for any emergency – they were just helping out … we get calls for all these sorts of things day-in and day-out.”

But locals are less impressed by the handbag heroics.

“The girl should be ashamed of herself,” said one witness. “It was an abuse of resources. I can’t imagine why they came at all.”

Personally, if the firefighters are happy to help I can’t see why it’s anyone else’s concern. I’m thrilled to know there are fireman out there who appreciate the value of a good clutch purse!

Hermès won’t let the financial crisis get it down. The French fashion label will open the doors of a new retail store in East Hampton this summer. But blink and you’ll miss it. Doors will close again when the weather cools on September 20.

“We have 22 of our own boutiques in the U.S. – East Hampton will be 22 and a half,” Hermès President and CEO Robert Chavez explained, adding that a permanent location doesn’t make sense in the global recession.

“We just weren’t ready to commit to a long-term lease, knowing that obviously the key selling period is in the summer months when most people are there.”

In keeping with the location’s laidback vibe, the Hermes store will be a relaxed affair with crisp white paint and casual accessories. The East Hampton’s store will sell Hermes famous handbags, although we can probably expect more beach bags than Birkins. It will also feature scarves, neckties, homewares, bathing suits, beach towels, and a selection of riding gear. I’m particularly intrigued by the one-of-a-kind white leather saddle, whose price is “available upon request.” Naturally.
