Fendi is handbag royalty. In a field full of mediocre purses, Fendi bags would be the grains of gold glittering between the rows. Awful overdone metaphors aside, they really are luxury items with a reputation that has yet to be challenged.

This bag uses the strong Fendi brand to its best advantage. In strong colors, this rainbow baguette features the “F” that makes Fendi so instantly recognizable, repeated in fine embroidery across the white leather surface. With the Zucca logo emblazoned all over, no-one will miss the bloodline of this exciting king of purses.

The luxury feel is continued by the gold-tone signature hardware, which stands out strongly against the angular logo background and matte shades. To avoid the effect being cluttered, the shape is kept relatively simple. There is nothing tackier for a classy brand like Fendi to try too hard, and keeping it calm is a true judge of character.

The interior doesn’t quite live up to the heavenly standards of Fendi. I doubt a king or queen would be happy with the bright yellow canvas, but that is all a matter of personal taste. At least the sunny colors will hopefully lead to a bright summer.

This is a lovely cheery bag, with enough Fendi trademarks to keep you happy for a long time.

If you happen to be in New York City on Thursday, you’ll be celebrating (along with the rest of the fashion district) “Burberry Day”. The mayor named the day in honor of the upcoming opening of Burberry’s new US headquarters.

In addition to the excitement of the opening, Christopher Bailey, creative director of the label, announced that the Burberry will return to its roots for a season. Their Spring 2010 collection for Burberry Prorsum will once again show in London during fashion week in September.

“It just feels right,” says Bailey. “There’s such great momentum and energy here within the brand.”

Unfortunately for Brits, the move from Milan to London for the upcoming runway presentation is a temporary situation for now. Other designers, especially promising stars like Christopher Kane, are hoping for more of the kind due to the wide publicity that Burberry’s switch brings.

“It’s really good for all of us,” says Christopher Kane. “The injection of attention again is great. Hopefully, they’ll come, and then come back again.”

I have to agree with Kane on this matter. It’s good to see Burberry getting some spotlight for heading back home. After all, they do owe their success to London.

Cross-body handbags are always practical, if nothing else. Thankfully, though, we don’t have to sacrifice fashion when choosing this convenient type of bag.

Designers are getting in on the popularity of the style and creating chic and cute versions of the cross-body. The B. Makowsky Los Angeles fits into that category with its unique look and stylish details.

Like many of the brand’s designs, the Los Angeles is crafted from soft, pebbled leather that belies its under-$150 price tag. One of the reasons for its somewhat affordable retail price might be its mid-range size. However, I can see the benefit of a smaller cross-body bag since the style can easily become cumbersome and bulky if a lot larger.

This violet purple color is certainly noticeable, which is great if you’re looking for something unique. For a more versatile handbag, you might opt for one of the basic black, white, or brown colors instead. The violet is lovely, however, and set off beautifully by the silvery metallic trim on the bottom, sides, and handle anchors.

The Los Angeles Cross-Body has a long strap that you can adjust to get the perfect fit. This B. Makowsky is lined in the brand’s signature leopard print material and has a magnetic closure.

Well, hello Upper East Siders, I spy a delectable leather accessory on the arm of Queen B. It seems that despite her romantic shortcomings, Blair Waldorf’s fashion sense is as on point as ever. If you don’t worship at the Gossip Girl altar like yours truly here then I may have already lost you, but it’s in your best (stylistic) interest to read on.

Gossip Girl may be intended for teens, but it has the best fashion out there as far as I’m concerned. A few episodes ago, Blair Waldorf was spotted touring Yale with this fabulous Jardin Rose Framed Duffel in lipstick red, and I had the very weird urge to reach through my television, strangle her character, and steal her purse.

Seeing it in purple, I realize that it would have been completely justifiable homocide. The supple nappa is luxurious and the smooth grain of the leather suits the detailed feminine design perfectly. The gentle rouching on the frame top moves into more extravagent gathering on the body of the bag that not only creates volume, but also moves the eye to the center of the bag with its beautiful leather rosettes.

The generous 15″ x 8″ x 7.5″ size might be a little too much for the dainty hand straps when full, but luckily there’s a removable shoulder strap. The gold tone hardware provides a subtle, but rich contrast with the cool purple hue.

I really couldn’t love this bag more. Unless, of course, I could afford it. But at $2,395 retail, this is one for the Blair Waldorf’s of the world.

If I had to describe this Etienne Aigner handbag in only one word, I would call it classy. Yes, it can be called classic, too, even somewhat timeless. However, it’s just so wear-to-Sunday-brunch chic that I can’t help but think “classy”.  

Images of Louboutin heels and summer hats aside, the Vienna Tote is a wonderful example of how to use linen on a handbag without resulting in a slouchy shape. Dooney & Bourke is known for its fun loving approach to life, and this shopper is no exception. Covered in a cute and retro duck print, this bag is light hearted and enthusiastic. It’s lovely to see a print that is so much fun, and its unconventional styling will have everyone’s attention.

The tote is nothing unusual in shape and size. Big enough to fit most of your needs, it is just like every other tote out there. Nice and spacey, in a simple square design. Don’t be put off by the fact it isn’t in an unusual shape, however – this hold-all does more than enough.

The thin leather handles are reinforced with square leather patches. With exaggerated stitching, this practical feature is turned into a pretty touch! To complete the effect of the leather trim, the tote has a cute leather tassel. Whilst allowing the bag to be tightened, this is mainly just an added extra to make this tote look good. It is the repeated duck pattern that makes this mid-range retro hold-all so effective in the end, however.

It is nice that this cartoon hold-all is available in so many color combinations, including green and pink, and oh-so-nautical red and navy. Everyone can have a pattern that suits them and their outfit. I just wish you could take these soapy wonders into the bath, or at the very least to a foam party!

The summer 2009 Kate Moss for Topshop collection launches in stores today, and so I thought it fitting to feature the only handbag in the collection, the Nouveau Liberty Print Bag. It’s a great piece to jump-start your Memorial Day shopping, be it online or in-store for lucky New Yorkers with their own new US Topshop.

The main draw of the bag is the print Moss collaborated on with ever-so-popular Liberty fabrics. It’s also used for a babydoll-silhouette sundress in this collection. The navy blue, teal, red and green color combination isn’t the easiest to work into a wardrobe, but I predict many ladies purchasing outfits around this piece.

The handbag would make a great tote, shopper or beach bag as it is 100% cotton and appears to have comfortably-long shoulder straps. Speaking of the straps, they nicely segment the print and keep it from becoming too overwhelming. Contrast seaming at the top of the bag and on the front flap pocket add to this affect.

It’s hard to find a cotton tote that isn’t too preppy and looks more high fashion. This will surely be a must-have for those searching for just such a thing. $100 is a lot for a cotton tote, but the Kate Moss collection should be collectible for years to come.
