The name of this handbag might be similar to the the Silverlake Flap Bag also from The SAK, but the two styles are very different in appearance.

Whereas the Silverlake is made from a subtle dark leather material, this Dandelion bag is crafted from practical nylon. The funky, retro-style print on the flap bag was designed by French graffiti artist Gilles Jourdan. I really like the combination of black-and-white with a little pop of color here and there.

The print kind of reminds me of the LeSportsac Morgan just with a lighter background and larger figures of flowers and birds. This flap bag also has a more hand-drawn appearance that makes it more artsy-looking. The “Peace” patch on the front is a quirky addition as well.

Probably the best feature of the Dandelion handbag is the convertible aspect of it. You can carry this flap bag upright by the short double handles on the top, though to me they seem a little too short to be completely practical for everyday use. Most gals would probably utilize the extra-long strap to wear it across the body instead. The top of the tote flaps down for a compact style.

If you like the combination of quirky style and convenience, you’ll like this convertible printed nylon bag from The SAK. The Dandelion flap bag retails for $79.

When I saw Anya Hindmarch’s “Meat and Poultry” tote, I thought it was adorable and wished there were more like it. Well, sometimes wishes do come true. 

Here’s another in the new line of totes by Hindmarch. This one is printed in dark pink ink with an old-fashion milk bottle and half dozen eggs. I really like the homespun charm of the graphics on these bags. It makes them look retro and just a little bit cozy. 

Also, the size is just right for errand running, or, yes you guessed it, grocery shopping. At 7″ x 13″ x 12″, it’s big enough to hold as much as you would actually want to carry. And the natural canvas material is not only strong and durable enough to withstand the wear of daily use, it’s also totally washable for those inevitable spills. 

The leather handles, while also strong and durable, do keep the tote from being machine-washable. Or at least from being “technically” machine washable. I know you aren’t supposed to throw leather in the machine, but I probably would anyways. Besides, that would make the straps nice and soft.

Any way you look at it, this is a great designer tote at a totally reasonable price. For $98, you usually can’t buy much in the way of handbags, so I look forward to seeing all the designs in this new line of totes.

Whiting & Davis is a favorite choice for budget-conscious fashionistas looking for the glamor of vintage evening bags without the four-figure price tag. With the leather flowers hobo, the label abandons its usual after five focus to create a cute everyday accessory.

At least, that was the intention. This hobo might have an adorable casual look, but it’s still made of the mesh Whiting & Davis is so fond of. The metal finish is a little glitzier than most of us need, or desire, in the daylight hours. Of course some girls may argue you can never have enough flash, but I’d tend to disagree.

The metallic finish is dressed down with leather floral details. These modern blooms add a touch of whimsy, appearing feminine without being too fussy. The accent looks fab on this gold hobo, but seems to get lost on the black bag.

The medium size is refreshing in a world of oversized handbags. It won’t carry the kitchen sink, but it will hold what you need to get through the day without weighing you down. And when your handbag is made of metal mesh, that’s an important thing to consider.

This isn’t my favorite Whiting & Davis handbag, but you’ve got to admire the designer for thinking outside the box. Fans of the brand will probably love the opportunity to wear their mesh accessories in the daytime hours. I’m just not sure I have a place for it in my nine-to-five wardrobe.

VBH became a designer to watch when Michelle Obama recently stepped out in New York carrying the Ballerina Bag. While the brand may have the First Lady’s seal of approval, I find their bags a little hit and miss. The Glitter Clutch may have been a little uninspired, but this mother of pearl clutch is much more impressive.

Mother of pearl effortlessly gives an accessory a timeless, vintage quality. It’s sadly underutilized these days, but that just makes mother of pearl clutches like this all the more appealing. The raised oval panels of opalescent pearl really pop against the clutch’s smooth black finish.

The slender profile makes it easy to tuck this purse under your arm, but it doesn’t take a genius to know it will limit your storage space. As far as do-it-yourself projects go, this one takes the cake for me. Luxury brand Hermes has recently revealed their plans to breed crocodiles to keep up with their overwhelming handbag demand.

It’s slightly conflicting news since we just learned of the company’s recent postponing of store openings because of financial struggles. However, along with that information, we also learned that their leather-goods division hasn’t been dealing with the same problems and cutbacks as other areas of Hermes. I’d say that’s fairly apparent by this news.

Their famous (or infamous, in some opinions) classic crocodile-skin handbags are flying off the shelves faster than they can produce them. Hermes Joint Chief Executive Officer Patrick Thomas recently discussed the matter when revealing the brand’s big plans:

“We are now breeding our own crocodiles on our own farms, mainly in Australia. The world is not full of crocodiles, except the stock exchange. We cannot face demand. We have massive over-demand. We are limited by our ability to train new craftsmen.”

Considering the fact that it takes multiple crocs and tons of breeding cost to make only one bag, I guess it could end up being a smart business choice for the company. It’s an interesting one, to say the least. I can only imagine what animal-rights group PETA has to say about this one.

I hate to sound too negative, but this kind of handbag is exactly why Kathy Van Zeeland isn’t at the top of my favorite designers list. Though there are several exceptions like the Stud Muffin Tote, I tend to view the brand’s designs as flashy and a little overworked with hardware.

With its glossy purple-colored faux leather and numerous silver details, the Heartbeat Hobo is one busy bag. There’s so much going on with it that I don’t know where to look first.

There are individual features that I like very much. For example, the angled exterior zippers are fun and edgy as are the tiny studs that decorate the side panels. The synthetic leather material, though definitely not my first choice in shiny purple, can be great for achieving a designer style for a fraction of the cost. Even the logo-engraved zipper pulls are a nice touch. Each of these details can be great on their own. When combined, however, they’re a bit over the top.

It’s possible that the purple color is what’s throwing me off the most, though. I don’t always dislike a grape-colored handbag, but it doesn’t look terribly high quality on this faux material. I should mention that the other two color choices, black and white, are more appealing and much less overwhelming for this style.

If flashy is what you like, though, you’ll probably love this purse. The Heartbeat Hobo gets its name from the heart-shaped logo plate on the front. You can also get the same look in a belted shopper or tote bag. This Kathy Van Zeeland hobo is priced at an affordable $89.

Spiegel dresses up the traditional white tote with its Rosette bag. It’s those all-important details which take this wardrobe staple from drab to fab.

Spiegel cleverly skirts the line between feminine and fussy with this minimalist modern design. Burgundy PVC is used to great effect in the trim, dual handles, and pretty rosette which gives the tote its name. The color really pops against the white nylon, and gives the minimalist rose an edgy look. The effect is one of simplicity, ideal for summer errands and picnics.

No matter what you’re doing with it, you’ll have plenty of room to bring along whatever you need. The ample interior has enough space to hold a few luxuries too, and with slip and zip pockets the essentials won’t slide around.

My only concern is the handles. This is such a large tote, and the soft walls make overstuffing a tempting prospect. When packed to capacity, I’m just not sure whether those skinny straps could handle the strain. Thankfully if they don’t go the distance, this Spiegel tote costs less than $50 to replace.
