We can usually count on Italian designer Francesco Biasia to produce handbags that are on-trend, yet timeless, at prices much lower than the big-name brands. The Hip Colette feels so confident in its style that the moniker trumpets it, but I feel that ego is a little misplaced.

It’s not that the purse is bad, exactly. But there are a few niggling flaws that I find a little difficult to overlook. I feel like the designer was hoping to achieve a bold, brassy look with all those chunky details, but the result is a little unsightly. We need something to soften the thick handles, big buckle, and oversized side pockets, but nothing comes.

The handles’ thickness isn’t the only thing that irks me. They’re also incredibly short, especially considering this bag’s size. Over-the-shoulder toting is out, but I can’t imagine lugging this baby any distance once it’s filled to the brim.

I also wonder why these days white is the only color available. We know this color is the ideal neutral for summer outfits, but it’s also never the most practical choice. It shows age quickly, and requires careful handling to remain pristine. Some girls don’t mind that, of course, but it’s a shame Francesco Biasia didn’t consider the rest of us. It seems black ones were available some time ago, so if you’re really keen make sure you scour eBay.

For all its faults, the Hip Colette has space to spare. The generous box shape features zip and slip pockets on the side walls, the ideal accompaniment to all those compartments outside. If it’s storage room you’re after, this Francesco Biasia bag has you covered. For me that’s just not enough to justify spending $425 on.

Looking for some summer fashion inspiration? Take a gander at the Louis Vuitton cruise collection for 2010.

Marc Jacobs, the current Creative Director for the luxury design house, seemed to draw from a sexy safari/nautical theme for the collection’s overall look. If you take a look at some of the handbags, you’ll see what I mean.

The thick rope trim on the signature LV logo print is summer casual at its best. I love the oversized knots on the bag shown here. They look sturdy enough for a day of yachting but so chic when combined with the bag’s other elements.

With summer pretty much on the doorstep, I am currently loving plastic bags. Vivienne Westwood plastic shoes are dominating the market, and bags are starting to follow the same vinyl trends.

This Guess handbag is a particularly useful and pretty example.The plastic is glossy and functional, and avoids being tacky with the addition of high sheen colored patent leather, in two shades of blue. This theme is continued with the geometric leather central decoration, bright and vibrant.

The best feature of this spacious designer tote is the snap-in center lining. If you are heading to the beach, this bag can be a simple plastic number with no interior to worry about, meaning that the sand can only do minimal damage. For other occasions (though probably not for smart business meetings), the monogrammed interior simply snaps in, giving you added security and a whole different type of functionality.

It’s an interesting and useful bag, with a lovely design. As with all plastic bags, however, be aware it won’t look like the highest class tote, even with the big Guess logo emblazoned on the front.

This just might be the cutest Nahui Ollin handbag I’ve come across so far. Despite the busy barcode paper of which it is constructed, the overall result is somehow simple and pleasing to the eye … or at least mine in particular.

Though I’m fully supportive of creative, eco-friendly fashion, I don’t usually find myself ga-ga over Nahui Ollin’s candy wrapper bags. Sometimes I think one would be plenty for a wardrobe since the paper choices are a tad repetitive to me.

That’s why I like the combination of the barcode print and red manmade leather trim. It’s not what I’m used to seeing from the brand, but I’m liking what I see.

The flat envelope style of this messenger bag makes it lightweight and easily portable. My only hesitation is whether or not the jagged sides could be dangerous for clumsy women like me.

Lanvin is one the oldest couture houses, and as such, it has been outfitting the richest and most fabulous of the elite for more than a century. Its purebred roots result in designs that will remain as chic and timeless a hundred years from now as they were a hundred years ago.

This satin Pop shoulder bag would make a perfectly confectionary addition to any ensemble. It is the very definition of understated: simple and unfussy, but with gorgeous, swoon-worthy details.

The color itself is a mouthwatering watermelon-y coral red. The fabric is the highest quality satin with a soft sheen and a smooth hand. I love the contrast between the supple softness of the fabric and the hard, structured look of the hardware. The clasp is particularly engrossing. Made of metal and acrylic, it adds a modern touch to this timeless classic.

The dainty, feminine chainlink straps add a hint of sparkle and a touch of glam. Although I usually don’t go in for logos, the meticulously crafted Lanvin coins attached to the strap are gorgeous in and of themselves. Lots of labels could take a cue here, and think of their logos as works of art, rather than as abstract and unaesthetic branding devices meant to be mindlessly stamped on canvas.

This shoulder bag is chic and versatile. It would be lovely for day with jeans and a sophisticated cardigan, but would also be great for a pretty serious evening of dress up. The only drawback of this bag, as far as I can tell, is the price. At $850, this lovely bag by the age-old couture house just isn’t in my stratosphere.

They say that good things come in small packages. Diamond rings, pieces of chocolate, this Village shoulder bag from Cole Haan … they might be right!

It may be a small in stature, but this smart Cole Haan purse packs a real style punch. The structured classic shape and lush pebbled leather give it a timeless appeal. While so many modern bags appear overworked with hanging charms and excess hardware, Cole Haan keeps it simple. Pockets up front and on the side add interest, but if they weren’t practical they probably wouldn’t be there.

Those exterior pouches complement the jacquard lined space inside, giving you a little more storage space. It’s a good thing too, because that structured leather doesn’t allow for overstuffing. That might disappoint packrats, but I find it refreshing to pare down my goodies and step out feeling a little lighter.

This poppy red bag adds a little flair to the Village’s conservative design, but if you’d rather embrace the timeless style it’s also available in whiskey brown.

We knew Hermes‘ Australian crocodile farms were bound to anger PETA, so it’s no surprise to hear the animal rights group has hit back.

“The thought of purposely breeding and killing crocodiles for an outdated, overpriced handbag should make any fashionista’s skin crawl,” the group said in a statement. “If Hermes really wants to be a leader in the fashion industry, it should stop killing animals for cold-blooded vanity and use cruelty-free mock croc and fake snake instead.“

I’m sure all animal lovers would agree with PETA’s sentiments, but Hermes continues to defy the financial crisis, maintaining its net worth despite the economic downturn. It might not be politically correct anymore, but fashionistas still can’t get enough crocodile Birkins. With the prized accessories costing up to $50, 000, it’s no wonder Hermes is reluctant to can the croc bags! No one’s likely to pay the big bucks for faux reptile skin after all!

We all know Big Buddha as an affordable on-trend fashion label but this Katie bag seems more grandmotherly than glamorous.

If you thought environmentally-friendly fashion meant organic totes and recycled candy wrapper bags, Yves Saint Laurent is here to prove you wrong. The label has taken the idea of using recycled materials and gone in a new direction for couture.

Under the design direction of Stefano Pilati, YSL has released a new collection called “New Vintage” that constructed entirely from leftover cotton drill from past inventories. It’s a clever and creative idea for sustainability and something I didn’t really expect from the brand.

Within the classic collection, first unveiled at retail store Barneys, you’ll find simple dresses and trench coats as well as sandals and a redesigned version of the Downtown tote. The colors palette is pleasantly simple with earth tones and light pinks and blues.

Pilati explained, “‘New Vintage’ is my way to reflect our social and economic state by capitalizing on existing resources to translate sustainable ‘values’ into ‘forms.'”  

Though the fabric is recycled leftovers, don’t expect the price to reflect that. The collection ranges in price from $495 to $4,100.

Bruno Rossi is a slightly anonymous designer in the hugely competitive world of handbags. His range, however, does deserve some recognition. In bright primary colors featuring his signature rainbow trim, these are bold and stylish additions to the market.

This particular bag, a spacious and decadent hobo, it just the thing to keep you feeling the summer vibe even if it rains. My personal favorite is the bold bright yellow shade, but if yellow isn’t your thing then you can choose from blue, black, red, purple or lilac instead. That is a huge amount of flexibility for a luxury bag.

This is a huge oversized tote, measuring 17″ wide! It’s great to help you carry everything including the kitchen sink, but do bear in mind that the brilliantly coordinated handles only have a drop of 7 inches. This could be tough to carry comfortably when full.

Niggles aside, I am impressed with this bag. I am even more impressed with the fact that each bag is made to order, which is just the thing if you’re a luxury gal who likes unique items. From the signature lining to the gunmetal hardware, this is definitely a range to look out for.
