If you covet Hermes Birkin bags but don’t have the dollars to splash around, this Shiny Croco-Leather handbag from Fontanelli is a more affordable alternative.

There are plenty of Birkin imitators out there, but this Fontanelli purse does it better than most. The greatest drawcard is the quality. While you don’t get real crocodile skin for the $595 retail value, you do get real calf leather. The patent skin is embossed to replicate crocodile scales, recreating the exotics good looks without the massive price tag.

The shape is unmistakeably a homage to Hermes, but the details are a little different. That helps the Fontanelli distinguish itself, ensuring it doesn’t look like just another knock-off. The flash of gold-tone hardware shines, contrasting with the glossy black fabric.

A long leather strap is a particularly inspired addition. While Hermes makes us struggle with the skinny handles, this detachable shoulder strap adds convenience and comfort.

Hermes who? While Birkin may inspire envy, I think I’ll set my sights on this Italian beauty.

We saw a hint of Gucci’s newest handbags in the Anja Rubik ads where the model nearly outshines the handsome Jackie bag. Well, now the purses can stand out all on their own as individual items.

The fall/winter 2009 collection includes plenty of typical Gucci style, like the well-known interlocking G logo print, with a few twists thrown in. For your iconic look of the label, you’ve got the Boston bag complete with horsebit details. Actually, there are quite a few horsebits in the collection.

If you prefer the unexpected, though, you’ll probably prefer styles like the Galaxy and Jackie. There are plenty of texture options like metallic green python, ostrich, and bamboo.

Stunning French actress Marion Cotillard made such a splash in Christian Dior’s Lady Dior spring advertisements, she’s back again for fall.

This time around the glamorous globetrotter has left Paris for another fashion capital: New York. Iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz captured this image of Marion and a slouchy Lady Dior quilted purse. Marion’s face is the mirror seems to suggest that double life we saw in Christian Dior’s short film, The Lady Noire Affair.

These ads will grace fashion mags in August before being plastered about Paris during October’s Fashion Week. The exposure’s sure to be massive, which makes me long for something a little more striking.

The Paris ads, with Marion perched atop the Eiffel Tower, were so dramatic. This time around Marion and the Christian Dior handbag are equally gorgeous, yet the ad itself still looks a little pedestrian in comparison!

Thankfully it’s only the first commercial in the series, so I’m hoping for something better to come.

Rampage seems to lean toward creating or mimicking contemporary styles for women who prefer fashion with a bit of an edge. I can’t say they always succeed in offering the most original options, but occasionally they are able to take a trend and make an unexpected handbag.

This Michelle clutch is very unique with its striking front feature and pretty blend of colors. Whether intended or not, it has a sort of mermaid feel with the layers of round disks that adorn the front. They gradually descend from a full row across the top to just one at the bottom of the v-shaped feature.

Though also available in black with tones of gold, tan, and champagne, it was this neutral gray multi-colored option that first caught my eye. The variety of shades is lovely, but the result manages to remain very subtle. There are just hints of shimmer in some of the silvery tones to add a refined touch.

The Michelle handbag looks much nicer than its $68 price suggests. It is made from synthetic leather, though, which always helps with affordability. There’s also a handy chain strap in case you don’t feel like carrying this clutch in the traditional way.

With so much choice and so much practicality, I do find myself wondering why they don’t have more bold primary colors. That aside, however, this is a beautiful if pricey envelope style clutch.

Charles L Thomas has turned my head with the Cynthia Bowler and Sandy Shoulder Bag, but the brand fails to inject that same spark into the Donna.

Jungle Java, Forest Moss, and Jungle Moss sound exotic, but these deep green shades look a little drab on the oxford fabric. The snake embossed trim seems like it’s meant to glam things up, but it actually looks a little tacky. Perhaps it’s a case of overkill here: I don’t mind the straps and trim around the top, but the belted accents add unnecessary clutter.

The saving grace is the interior, which offers just what busy girls need. There’s so much space, and the boxy design ensures you can access every inch of it. One wall has a large zippered pocket, while the other has side-by-side cell and slip pouches. They’re all framed with leather to stand up to everyday use. If you’re still struggling for storage space, or simply want a place to store those goodies you need on hand, there’s another zippered pocket on the back.

But the underwhelming style makes me reluctant to part with $359 to snap this practical purse up. The clever design may win me over in time, but I’m looking for instant attraction instead!

Bulgari has channeled retro style with this fun Penelope hobo bag.

The cute color combo of pale pink and black calls to mind poodle skirts and jukeboxes. It’s feminine without being fussy, and the rest of the Penelope follows suit. The casual slouch we associate with hobos is gone, replaced with smooth, chic lines. It’s surprising really considering the canvas body, but the soft grain leather trim and corner patches add a lot of structure.

By ditching the unstructured slouch this hobo also loses out on storage space. Its medium size should be big enough to carry most everyday items, but girls used to oversized purses may still struggle. The sleek look also doesn’t lend itself to overstuffing, even though the soft walls could probably accommodate a little extra.

For just $750, the Penelope is a relatively affordable way to add a little Bulgari luxury to your ensemble.

In my books, Chloe is almost always fabulous whether you’re considering their clothing, handbags, or newly released ad campaigns.

I can’t say that their previous campaigns have made a lot of buzz in the fashion world, but I happen to love their new shots for the fall 2009 season. Situated among a very autumn-appropriate wheat field in Spain, a triumvirate of dark-haired beauties shows off the label’s chic outfits.

The models featured are Kasia Struss, Sigrid Agren, and Karlie Kloss. The campaign was styled by Marie Amelie Sauve and photographed by photographer Mikael Jansson.

Nahui Ollin has been cleverly weaving recycled paper into handbags for some time now. I’m not always a fan of her styles, but there are many designs that have such a great combination of colors and textures as to catch my attention.

The ER collection has a few different versions including tote, satchel, and this mini purse. On this particular paper option, Nahui Ollin used recycled Tootsie Roll paper for the main body of the bag. Surprisingly, you can hardly even tell until you really examine the material.

The Tootsie Mini ER satchel’s best feature is the cherry red trim on the handles and bottom corners. If you’re concerned about eco-friendly and animal-friendly issues, you’ll be glad to know that this design uses only manmade leather. It only makes sense since the label places high priority on using recycled paper.

If you like the look but don’t love the obvious utilization of candy wrappers, you might enjoy the other two options for this Mini ER purse. One is Sunday paper comics in color with black trim, and the other is an abstract print with orange details.

Obviously the Mini ER isn’t a large handbag, but it’s a cute little purse with tons of personality. It’s exactly the sort of thing I’ve come to expect from Nahui Ollin, but I think this might be one of the brand’s best yet.

Handbags have just become more high-tech with the advent of Bag TV. The purses are spacious and chic enough to carry almost anywhere, and the built-in television screens are sure to please jetsetters and daily commuters.

Bag TV may be a bit of a misnomer, because at this point you can’t use it to watch regular television at all. Yet it will play all your favorite DVDs, and there’s enough room inside to carry them too. It also comes with headphones so you won’t disturb your fellow travelers.

The addition of a remote control is a little silly considering how small the screen is, but girls who love their gadgets probably won’t mind its inclusion. I also wonder why such a futuristic bag wouldn’t include a basic zip closure to keep it safe from rain.

The style isn’t bad, but it’s also a little limited. This basic tote shape better suit you, because it’s the only one available. We do get a little more choice with color however, with glossy red and black and matte tan and pale pink amongst the options.
