Sometimes I think you’re either a Guess girl or you’re not. High-end snobs turn up their nose at the brand’s love of PVC and embossed exotics, while plain Janes shudder at the bold colors and the rhinestones. While they never suit everybody, Guess is the arm candy of choice for many girls who love a bargain.

The Tabitha tote has all the trademarks of a classic Guess bag. Rhinestones? Check. Bright colors? Check. That affordable PVC finish? Check and check. Yet it doesn’t look as overworked as so many Guess handbags, so perhaps it might win the brand some new fans!

The first trick is keeping the shape simple, so the embellishments aren’t competing with anything else. Then the colors are kept complementary, so the reptilian straps add subtle interest rather than screaming. The rhinestone studded logo stands loud and proud, but the label’s fans would be disappointed if it didn’t!

Guess’ designs are so ostentatious, we often forget that its handbags are pretty practical. The Tabitha is no exception, with a large zippered pocket and three slip pouches helping the roomy inner space stay organized.

Guess prides itself on affordable prices, so it’s no surprise to see the Tabitha retail for less than $100. That should please fashionistas feeling the pinch of the financial crisis!

I’m used to seeing models looking spaced out, eccentric, or just plain bored in designer ad campaigns. It’s not a requirement, but it sure does seem to be popular.

The newest Marc Jacobs campaign, however, takes things a step further than a few looks of ennui. These models just appear to be flat out inebriated. I’m actually going to label this campaign as just plain weird.

The tripped-out models in the ads are Olga Sherer, Kamila Filipcikova, Natasa Vojnovic, and Ajuma Nasanyana. In comparison to Miu Miu’s recent stark fall campaign where the bags and clothes mostly outshine the models, I can hardly even separate the Marc Jacobs products from the acid-washed background. I mean, did you even notice the handbag tossed on the couch in the above ad?

If photographer Juergen Teller was going for shocking, I’d say he achieved that with flying colors. Most people have come to expect the unexpected from the quirky Marc Jacobs, but this just might be a new level for the label.

This isn’t the first Julianne to hit the pages of BagBunch, but it’s definitely my favorite. While the Madison leather version of the style is probably the more classic option of the two, the Coach’s Op Art fabric option is just too pretty to resist.

I can’t possibly call this sateen material practical by any definition of the adjective. An all-white handbag is hardly anything but a decorative accessory. However, it’s one that is sure to make a statement.

As with any of the brand’s logo-printed bags, this Julianne satchel is easily identifiable as a Coach. Its signature hardware on the front and the serial number printed inside identify the handbag as authentic.

The Op Art Julianne has at least one convenient feature. In addition to the double leather handles with a decent drop length, this tote has a detachable shoulder strap that allows you to carry it across the body as well. I suppose beauty can be at least a little practical sometimes.

Many designers have attempted to cash in on the fringed trend, but few have done it with the style and sophistication of Gucci.

The Babouska is a bag that stays true to the bohemian style synonymous with the hobo, while adding an injection of elegance. The traditional crescent shape and long flowing fringe give the purse the right amount of hippie flair.

But that’s when things take a turn. The addition of snakeskin panels is luxurious. The rows of round metal studs are a little bit rock and roll. These unexpected touches could easily have confused the design, and under the hands of a less capable design team they undoubtedly would. Yet here it all seems to work to create a look that’s unique and strangely cohesive.

As with so many Gucci bags, this one offers more polish than practicality. Such an enormous space calls for much more than just a couple of pockets. The slouchy design is also bound to make it a little difficult to get your goodies in and out, especially if you’re carrying it with the regular handles. At least a little versatility is offered with the detachable messenger strap, even if this does dress the Babouska down.

But snakeskin is never cheap, and that’s likely to be the greatest stumbling block for most fashion fans. Expect to shell out a four-figure sum even if you can snag it on eBay.

Viktor & Rolf are the latest designers to team up with Samsonite for a luxury Black Label luggage collection. The new retro line features suitcases, travel bags, and accessories for all jetsetters who want to make an impression.

Furla takes minimalist design to new levels with the Giselle Shopper.

The simplistic curved design is contemporary, yet too basic to appeal to everybody. It offers a very specific look, with large silver grommets the only respite from that plain matte leather. The Giselle may be a little boring for some, but I think the bold colored leather saves it from this fate. Purple, red, and orange are often too much, but with nothing else fighting for attention they work here. I can just imagine how striking this shopper would look paired with a black tailored suit or other neutral outfits.

While the exterior may be simple, Furla hasn’t skimped on the extras inside. A magnetic snap on the side walls complements the press-studded leather strap, which extends in the other direction for double security. It’s an inspired safety feature, but one which may be a little fiddly for day-to-day use. But we will find value in those pockets: one for your cell and a zippered one for small valuables.

The Giselle has such lovely leather, but the lack of real bells and whistles makes the $475 retail price seem steep. If you’re still interested I’d act quickly while Amazon has this shopper on sale!

Woven leather is effortlessly chic, which may be why everyone from high-end designers Bottega Veneta to cheap and cheerful brands like Aldo have gotten in on the act. Somewhere in the middle of these extremes comes Francesco Biasia’s Caroline satchel.

At first glance, I didn’t realize the Caroline was woven at all. My eye was instantly drawn to the dramatic black and white stripes, so it wasn’t until I looked closer that I saw the subtle micro-weave texture. The small weave is so elegant, adding depth without cluttering the design with large diamonds. It’s a good thing too, because those stripes receive enough competition from the belted accent up top.

The modern styling is a winner, but Francesco Biasia has never been a designer to sell us mere looks. Inside we see an interior which is more cleverly organized than most. The large zippered compartment in the center is the key, dividing this roomy space into three separate sections. It doesn’t stop there, with slip and zip pouches built into the sides to carry your loose change and girly gadgets.

Fans of the brand may be a little disappointed to see the $750 price tag, which is significantly larger than we expect from the label. Yet when you stop to consider the craftsmanship here, I think it helps to justify the splurge.

As if we didn’t realize that all handbags aren’t created equal, The Examiner has enlisted BagSnob.com bag experts Tina Craig and Kelly Cook to explain which styles are best for certain body types.

For example, you want to make sure that you find a purse with a wide opening if you have large hands. That one might be a tad obvious to most. However, you also should avoid small bags if you happen to be tall as they’ll make you look even bigger.

For example if a petite woman wants an oversized bag, make sure the shoulder strap(s) fit high and snug on the shoulder so it’s not both wide AND long,” offers Tina Craig, Co-Founder, Snob Global Media. “If a longer tote is being considered, it should not be too wide or bulky. Flat bags are best when small girls want the oversized look. Givenchy Sacca is flat (expandable with three compartments so it still fits a lot!) and wide with short handles, perfect for petite women!“

Another interesting tidbit they offered about appropriate handbag proportioning for your body is to find a handbag “at least twice as wide as your hand fully spread apart.” I guess I should go measure my bag collection in comparison to my hands now.

Fossil has gone back to the drawing bag and revamped its popular Weekender Duffel to create the Weekender II.

This is one of the louder designs, with fiery orange and yellow sunburst blooms clashing with a red and white diamond print pocket and tan trim. That look isn’t for everybody, or even most of us, so Fossil take things down a notch or two with conservative tan and black varieties and an abundance of other prints.

The look isn’t as important as what the Weekender II can do. It’s a practical package, as appropriate for weekend breaks or sleepovers with the girls. Yet you may look for something larger, or use this as hand luggage, if you hope to take a longer getaway. It’s a big bag, but it’s not going to accommodate many outfits or pairs of shoes!

Limitations aside, it does what it does well. The cotton canvas is lightweight and durable, if not as luxurious as leather. The handles come with comfortable cushioned inserts and adjustable buckles. It all comes at a very reasonable $138.
