Prada’s latest pop-up store is a tribute to the revered Italian art critic and writer Apollinaire. As he developed his career in France, it’s only fitting that the temporary boutique is in Paris’ Place Beauvau.

Apollinaire is famous for collaborations with the likes of Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. He was fascinated by the work of Cubist painters, and was regarded as one of the most active members of the Montparnasse arts scene.

Designer Robert Baciocchi created the space, which features a facade paying homage to the Mirabeau bridge. This bridge inspired one of Apollinaire’s most iconic poems. Its silhouette frames the store, which also features mannequins depicting a scene straight from the dawn of the 20th century. The historic theme continues with the building’s marble, which came from the very first Prada store built in 1913.

The Prada pop-up store will trade for the next five months. It sounds like it’s worth a visit if you happen to visit the world’s fashion capital!

One of my handbag ambitions is to own a Judith Leiber minaudiere. Their prohibitive prices and practical restrictions are a big stumbling block, but once I win the lottery I’m going to buy one of those gem encrusted beauties.

I’m not sure of the wearability of the eye-catching animal clutches she favors, so I’d probably opt for something like this leopard print minaudiere. Leopard print may be a little gaudy, especially in this candy pink, but it always seems to come back into vogue.

Swarovski crystals in varying shades of pink give this purse a graduated look. They’re offset by black and silver gems, which form the leopard spots. The vintage curved shape is enhanced by an old-style pushlock closure made of onyx. Gold framing completes the elegant design.

Minaudieres have their limitations, and this one’s no exception. Its petite stature and structured design doesn’t afford us a lot of storage room, although it’s significantly better than the oddly-shaped animal purses Judith Leiber often produces! The skinny snake strap doesn’t look made for comfort or harsh treatment, but it is lovely to have a hands-free carrying option.

This Judith Leiber minaudiere won’t be to everyone’s tastes, with its distinctive look and practical limitations. But for those with their heart set on it, those flaws won’t matter a bit!

Anja Rubik struck a dramatic pose for Gucci’s pre-fall ads featuring the Jackie handbag collection, and a few images of the label’s official fall 09 campaign shows a continuation of the same vibe.

Though we’ve already seen a quick preview of Gucci’s fall handbags, now we get to see at least one of those impressive handbags on the arm of Raquel Zimmerman. The model shows off the new Galaxy shoulder bag smack-dab in the middle of this particular ad. Now that’s how I like to see a bag in a campaign.

The ads were styled by Vogue Paris fashion director Emmanuelle Alt, whose resume also includes fashion editor for Gucci’s spring/summer 09 campaign. This time around, however, Alt opted for a simple, black-and-white setting with lots of faces and plenty of fall fashion. It almost reminds me of Christy Turlington’s stark set for YSL’s fall ads.

The other models in the ad are Myf Shepherd, Gerhard Freidl, and Gucci veteran Anja Rubik.

At first glance, this Elliott Lucca Napoli tote looks quite a bit like one of the brand’s other drawstring handbags, the Aruba. In fact, the shape and basic design of the two is nearly identical.

The unmistakable differences, however, make the Napoli as a style worth considering just as much as the Aruba. The most obvious difference to me is the weaving that covers the bag. It reminds me a lot of the signature woven look of fellow designer label Bottega Veneta, although the Napoli’s weave seems just a bit tighter than some of Bottega Veneta’s designs.

Another major contrast between the Aruba and this version of the Napoli is the color. Though the Napoli comes in a variety of standard and even a few surprising color choices, this dark metallic gray is quite unexpected. It’s a great option for women who love a bold handbag.

You won’t be short of storage with this drawstring tote considering its wide, open interior. It’s definitely not one of those thin, flat totes you can carry around without feeling bulky. The Napoli Draw handbag is not small by any means. However, it’s not supersized and unmanageable making it perfectly appropriate for everyday use.

After much hype and industry buzz, we can finally feast our peepers on the new Chanel ads starring edgy pop princess Lily Allen. She’s a self-confessed Chanel addict, but Lily’s cheeky style was never a natural choice for the sleek fashion house.

Yet somehow it all works, with Lily’s irreverent presence giving these ads a healthy dose of humor. Lily looks inspired by Audrey Hepburn circa Breakfast at Tiffany’s with her diamond tiara, dark sunglasses, and sweeping up-do. But despite her vintage makeover, Lily is far from demure and her vivacious spirit shines through.

The unstructured shape is pure hobo; boho chic to be sure but not so practical. The functional limitations are heightened in a bag of this size, although its large dimensions are bound to please fans of the oversized trend.

Practicality can be easy to overlook, but price rarely is. In these days of belt tightening and penny pinching, the retail value of almost $2000 is likely to make most of us think twice about adding the Rania to our collection.
