At first glance, one could easily accuse this handbag of being boring. It’s got no bows or buckles to attract our attention. Black is a color too conservative to wow us. And jersey-knit doesn’t have the same appeal as an exotic skin or even a high-quality leather.

Yet there’s something compelling about the simplicity of this handbag. The soft relaxed shape is everything a hobo should be. That gold thread-wrapped handle is sophisticated against the black fabric body. And in a world of overworked handbags, there’s something lovely about a purse that gets back to basics.

While the exterior is simple, the interior doesn’t follow the same minimalist philosophy. The opulently large space is kept organized with a zippered pocket and a couple of multifunctional slips. A snap closure doesn’t provide the same level of security that a zipper might, but it does help keep your girly goodies inside.

Jersey-knit may not be such a luxurious choice, but it does keep the price down to a mere $39. Just try to find another oversized handbag for that bargain price!

Ana Claudia Michels is the star of this sexy advertising campaign from Le Silla. The Italian label is attempting to sell its lush chocolate suede tote and sexy black heels, but is anyone really looking at the accessories?

The sight of Ana Claudia lounging around a New York apartment in her underwear, legs in the air, is a little … well … distracting. The artistic team of photographer Sebastian Faena, art director David Schnapper, and stylist Nicola Formichetti has created an ad that’s head-turning, if nothing else!

Le Silla’s creative director Monica Ciabattini is known for her chic and often eccentric interpretations of femininity, so perhaps this ad shouldn’t come as any surprise. While at first glance it seems like mere eye candy for men, there’s something powerful about Ana Claudia’s ability to captivate here.

While all that bare flesh may distract us from the fashion here, they do say that sex sells. If that old adage still holds true, I expect Le Silla’s new line to do very well!

Transparent totes are an affordable and easy-clean way to give any outfit a distinct look. This pony bag is Ralph Lauren’s attempt at the popular style.

As clear handbags go, this one is a little lacking in pizazz. The black and clear color scheme is a little conservative, and Ralph Lauren’s pony player screenprint is predictable. But for fans of the brand, the use of that iconic image alone will be enough to boost the bag’s sales.

The open top design allows for easy access, but security is a concern. The zippered pocket gives us a safe space to stash smaller valuables, but what about our wallet? Maybe that’s best left at home, or wrapped up in a beach towel away from prying eyes.

It’s not specifically marketed as a beach bag, but transparent totes always seem more suited to this purpose than any others. So it may not see much action outside of summer, but at only $48 this Ralph Lauren bag still represents good value for the label’s many admirers.

Is it just me or are handbag designers reaching new heights when it comes to crafting unique styles out of recycled materials? I mean, we’ve seen bags out of banana leaves, license plates, and now billboards.

Okay, so it’s not the very first time billboard materials have been used in handbag design, but it’s still worthy of a round of applause for environmentally-friendly creativity. It’s also not a new thing for L.A.-based design company Artecnica to be involved in sustainable production, but their new mini-collection of bags and attaché cases made from discarded advertising is quite impressive.

It was advertising giant TBWA who gave them the challenge to make something out of the old billboards destined to inhabit landfills, and Artecnica rose to the task beautifully. Fitting right in with their Design with a Conscience line, shoppers can choose between a mesh-like tote, perfect for days at the beach or maybe carrying around yoga gear, and a clutch-shaped cork case lined in billboard material.

The new line of eco-conscious handbags debuted at the New York International Gift Fair this week.

It’s time to dust off those fall clothes and get your winter wardrobe in order because the warm season is quickly fading away. With that in mind, I think it’s more than appropriate to start considering accessories that involved those delightfully luxurious winter fabrics like cashmere, velvet and suede.

If suede is your favorite, then chances are you’ll love this Ghibli tote in a crocodile-stamped version of the material. The thought of combining the two is somewhat ingenious since the two unique textures only enhance each other in the overall visual effect.

The choice of fabric and surface treatment isn’t the only clever thing about this Ghibli bag, though. It can actually be worn one of two ways. You can either keep its folded-down, slouchy tote shape, as shown in the picture, or flip up the top half and rearrange the handles to make an even bigger handbag. Either option is stylish, but it’s great to have choices.

The colors are neutral – beige suede with brown trim – but gold metallic flecks on the material make it more interesting and not at all bland. I’m not sure I’d call the bag completely practical since light-colored suede hardly ever is, especially when used quite a bit. However, it’s a lovely tote option for when the cooler seasons are upon us. It’s also not as much of a stretch as some designer brands as it retails for $329.

Alexander Wang has quickly developed a following with his edgy, rock-n-roll infused designs. I’m not a formal member of the cult or anything, but I happen to think the man’s a genius with black leather. In his hands, leather looks heavy metal hard, but feels buttery soft.

The Hilary shopper is a handbag sure to develop a strong following. It combines the basic shape of a shopper with the slouch of a hobo, resulting a in a soft but structured look. It’s 20″ x 19″ x 18″ size is big enough to hold basically every item you could possibly need for a day on the go, but because of its slouchiness it won’t look strange if you only throw a few things inside.

The stud detail on the front of the bag is what really seals the deal for me. There’s basically nothing more badass than black metal studs on black leather, and that hard rocker edge is retained even though the ends of the studs have been lopped off, resulting in a more wearable, not to mention more practical, look. Can you imagine what a zillion pointy studs will do to a silk dress?

If I had $890 to spend freely right now, I would gladly fork it over for this hunk of handbag deliciousness. I even think the price is semi-reasonable, due to the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. Alexander Wang, please make a diffusion line before I start maxing out my credit cards.

The Anuschka check book case is just the sort of high class handbag content that I am talking about. The print, you see, is too bright and garish to work as a full hold-all or tote, but works brilliantly as a feature conversation point to guard your check book from damage.

Whilst the colorful peacock feathers are very elegant and pretty, I do wonder why the designers of this sophisticated check book case decided to use three different animal prints. Thankfully the abstract style make it work more than expected, but it still would have probably been better with just one!

Complete with signature and a convenient ID slot, this is a functional item that will keep your important check book nice and safe. Subtle, it is not!!

Springtime may be long gone, but you can hang onto a little sunshine all year round with this Magid Florals tote.

The vibrantly colored blooms contrast with the white fabric, giving this tote a cheerful lift. It’s not the most contemporary design I’ve seen. In fact, I think my grandmother would love this bold floral. But with just the right amount of confidence, and a wide-brimmed sun hat, this tote could complete the casual outfit of a woman of any age.

This is a spacious tote, ideal for carrying daily essentials and a few luxuries besides. However, you may struggle to keep all those girly goodies organized. There’s just one zippered pocket and a cell phone slip. That’s just not enough to keep such a massive space in check. Whatever will we do with our iPods?

The straps are also a little disappointing. While the flat fabric design is made for comfort, they’re not quite long enough to easily slip over our shoulder. An extra inch or two would have made all the difference.

For all its limitations, this Magid tote is a sizeable bag with a distinctive design. It’s reasonably priced for a day bag too at just $62.00.
