The $295 price tag may seem hefty for such a small bag, but you’ve got to consider the quality. Genuine python never comes cheaply, but this shoulder bag is less expensive than many on the market.

Rumors are abuzz that Jean Paul Gaultier will be leaving his current post as creative director for French luxury giant Hermès. The highly acclaimed couture aficionado, who has been with the company for the last six years, will reportedly step down from the position following the release of the design house’s spring 2010 collection in October.

Gaultier has done well for the company since Martin Margiela resigned back in 2003. Though the company has faced a few setbacks here and there during the fashion recession, their overall numbers have been strong. Let’s not forget their recent foray into crocodile farming simply due to the high demand of their astronomically expensive handbags. That alone says quite a bit about their continued success.

We don’t know yet if the separation of creative director from label is a mutual decision or not. However, Hermès must be somewhat sorry to see him go after seeing good numbers during his stint. It is even financially invested in Jean Paul Gaultier’s personal designing with a 35 percent stake in his collection.

There’s no word yet on a possible replacement.  Whoever it is, though, will have some big fashion shoes to fill.

This LeSportsac Basic Backpack might live up to its name because of its simple book bag design. It has all the typical components of the style, but there are some signature details that make this backpack a step above others.

If you prefer understated colors, you’re probably better off opting for a classic Jansport backpack, which is more in keeping with the “basic” tag. However, for students who like a little twist on traditional, this LeSportsac bag fits the bill.

Typical of LeSportsac’s signature details, the Basic Backpack features a fun, whimsical print that is far from subtle but by no means overwhelming. The quirky pattern, appropriate called squirrely, is a mix of woodsy folk art figures on a light blue background. While some might think it a tad juvenile for their taste, I happen to find its playful design quite appealing.

The other expected LeSportsac detail is the ripstop nylon material inside and out that makes the Basic Backpack both durable for everyday use and convenient for keeping clean. Plenty of organizational pockets contribute to the bag’s practicality, as does the matching zippered pouch that accompanies it. Padded straps are just an added bonus.

I thought for sure that we were beginning to see the last of the neon color craze, but then I found this brand new canvas tote by Chloé. See by Chloé’s offerings are usually on the very edge of mass market trends, but this time they may be just a minute too late.

Not that a color should necessarily be relegated to trend fodder, but let’s be honest. Since neons were everywhere in 2008, I can’t help but think “last year” when I look at this. The graphic is quirky and cute, but the black on hot pink punk lite print only enhances its past tense appearance.

It does satisfy my personal requirement that a tote cost less than $100, but you’ll find it for sale for as high as $145, so be aware. It really shouldn’t cost that much, considering that it is unlined and contains no interior pockets or any other organizational features.

Also on my list of complaints is the horribly tacky chain hanging from the printed dog’s neck. It really looks like an accessory made for children. If it was made for little ones I might feel differently about it. The cutesy color and quirky details would all make a little more sense. But for grown women with the pocket change to fund a hundred dollar carryall? I don’t think so.

Christopher Kane is one busy 27-year old. This young fashion designer, who originally hails from Scotland, has been making big impressions on his own and with other major labels.

On the heels of his capsule collection of rock-and-roll worthy bags, shoes, and jewelry for Versace’s re-launch of their hip line Versus, the award-winning Kane is getting ready to release his fall collection for retail favorite Topshop. The preview for this much-anticipated line is sure to get shoppers even more excited for the items to hit the shelves.

The collection consists of mostly affordable apparel, shoes, and handbags. Though the edginess of the line is completely tame compared to Kane’s Versus designs, there is still an abundance of studs and other metallic details mixed in with some ultra-feminine dresses.
