Whilst autumn/winter trends may be here for the foreseeable future, I thought one last homage to good old summer was due. This vintage picnic basket is just the sort of fun yet functional summer item that makes those sunny days as fun as possible.

Built in typical retro straw bag style, this Goodhope tote is the epitome of kitsch with its patent red handles and cute gingham lining. At first glance it could be any of the vintage style straw bags that have been so popular this summer.

Of course when you look closer this pretty red tote has plenty of hidden functional extras. Around the outside is a strong outdoors-resistant canvas outer, with 6 pockets for plates and bits and pieces. It is a shame that the pockets don’t close to protect your china, and nor does the top seal with anything more than a bow.

That said, this is after all an amalgamation of handbag and picnic basket, with some features of one and some of the other. If you want a casual but pretty gingham bag with some added usefulness, then this brilliant excuse for a picnic will help you along. If you fancy a full blown family outing, however, you may want a bigger bag!

You may not have heard of Tina Maristela-Ocampo, yet, but her Celestina clutches are quickly becoming some of the most coveted accessories in the world. This superb Abalone Felipa clutch certainly lives up to the label’s reputation. The geometric shape that the abalone shells have been cut into brings out all their natural nuances, and their meticulous placement into the 3D design of the clutch emphasizes the dimensionality of the colors and textures.

The 7″ x 4″ x 3″ makes the clutch comfortable to carry, but not exactly practical for carrying a lot of things. But, then again, nothing about this clutch is practical: the materials are rare and fragile, the size is small, and the price is high. It is as much a work of art as a fashion accessory.

Nonetheless, as a fashion accessory it is exquisite. The green abalone has been diamond cut, and is edged with macassar ebony. The simple sleek design of the bag really allows the luminosity of the natural materials to show through. A smooth zip opens to reveal a generous lined interior, complete with a handy zippered pocket. I could use a few more pouches for my gadgets, but Fontanelli prefers a clean, uncluttered design.

This futuristic-looking suitcase rings in at an astounding $20,000. However, I suppose the price is justified by the handmade, completely unique and technologically advanced product you get. Its super lightweight design is compact enough to meet IATA regulations for carry-on luggage but with convenient features like retractable wheels and a central locking system. I guess all of this accomplishes Henk’s mission to “fulfil the dreams and desires of those who find space, money and time to enjoy the beautiful things in life.”

The options are practically endless for customizing your own suitcase. Besides choosing between things like glossy carbon fibre or ostrich-embossed calfskin for the outside, you can also personalize your Henk by adding a name, monogram, or even logo to the design. I guess that’s the benefit of each one being made by hand to your specifications. Talk about luxury!

It’s a completely different style from other designer luggage like Louis Vuitton or Tom Ford’s traditional alligator set but something that I’m sure will intrigue many a wealthy business man or woman with high demands, contemporary taste, and few grand to spend.

Payless ShoeSource will released this stylish charity tote as part of NYC’s Fashion’s Night Out, an initiative designed to promote New York fashion and retail and inspire consumer confidence.

The fabric bags feature the official cityscape graphic created for the Fashion’s Night Out campaign. The reusable bag is made to last with its rip-stop nylon finish and electric blue lining. $5 from the sale of each tote will benefit The National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center.

Payless will also host late-night shopping events on September 10 as part of the Fashion’s Night Out celebrations. Payless guest designers Christian Siriano, Lela Rose, and Patricia Field will appear at the stores on Lexington Avenue, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway in Soho respectively.

“Payless is thrilled to participate in New York City’s Fashion’s Night Out with an exciting program that is sure to help bring shoppers out on this special night,” said LuAnn Via, CEO and president, of Payless.

The Fashion’s Night Out tote will be available at almost 50 Payless ShoeSource stores in New York City from September 10 for $10.

Alexander McQueen is known for his punky, hard-edged irreverence. He’s one of those designers that most people either love love love or hate hate hate, but he’s so extreme that he garners very little in the way of wishy-washy.

I, for one, adore McQueen, and if I could walk around head-to-toe in his crazy clothes, that would be ideal. But I would settle for this clutch, because it’s bananas! It’s jewelry, it’s a purse, it’s sleek, it’s rock-n-roll, it’s freaking perfect!

I always love the smoothness of a patent hard cased clutch, but even more so when it’s topped off with a  knuckle ring handle. Each of the four rings is different: one is a giant crystal, one is a tiny skull looking sideways, one is a giant skull with crystal details, and one is a complexly engraved ring with a flower and skull motif. Of course, all these skulls are bound to chase away the faint of heart, but this bag isn’t for them, anyway.

The 7″ x 4.5″ x 2″ size is great for cramming with only the night’s necessities: keys, compact, and some bright red gloss. Of course, it isn’t exactly practical, due to it’s extreme edginess and small size, but, eh, who cares? The only thing that I don’t like about this clutch is the fact that I can’t afford it. At $1,595 in patent, it’s too rich for my blood, but I would be willing to draw blood to own it.

Everyone needs a good weekend bag. Even if you don’t travel on a regular basis, it’s still important to have at least one mid-sized duffle with space to fit everything you need for a few days away from home.

One of the great things about this Tommy Hilfiger Explorer duffle bag is that it could work for either a man or a woman. Though I’m sure there are some women who would scoff at carrying a blue and white striped tote, there is really nothing decidedly masculine about this bag.

It is probably best described simply as a nautical-inspired duffle bag. It’s nothing quite as overt in style as something like the Dooney & Bourke DB Sport Duck Tote, which has water-loving animals actually printed right on the bag. The Explorer, with its ticking stripe and dark brown trim, merely hints at that classic vacation-in-the-Hamptons look that Tommy Hilfiger often imbues into their creations so well.

That aforementioned dark brown trim is made from shrunken oil leather and outlines the top and bottom of the bag as well as connecting up the sides to the handles. Those two little straps are hardly convenient when carrying this size of duffle, though. The longer detachable strap makes toting the Explorer a less trying task and will suit you much better for quick runs through the airport.

Patent orange handbags are beautifully on trend and are great fun this season. They bring to mind vibrant mod clothing and Vespas.

But this particular orange bag made me do a double take. The Sofie looks an awful lot like Vitalio Vera’s Sofia. It’s almost got the same name! But there are a few fundamental differences which makes this worth another look.

The drawstring bow style remains, but it’s a little bolder and edgier this time around. Then there’s that finish, which is sleeker and more sophisticated. Of course it’s simulated patent, but Vitalio Vera fans know that the brand’s bargain basement prices come with some sacrifices. The studs on the handles are also gone, replaced with a cleaner and cooler image. Essentially the Sofie is the Sofia redone for 2009.

The practical styling is one consistent perk. Outside, there are the handy side pockets for stashing the goodies you need on hand. Inside there’s plenty of space, complemented by a zip pocket, a cell phone slip, and another open pocket for stashing your MP3 player or a small camera.

The Sofie also stays true to Vitalio Vera’s cheap and cheerful pricing policy. In fact, just like the Sofia, the Sofie retails for just $39.95. Who says you have to pay 2009 prices for an on-trend style?
