It’s all in the details for this season’s handbags. Forget your plain leather purses; studded and quilted bags are leading the way.

“Handbags have become the new statement accessories,” said Katie Frayard, manager of Kiki. “Clothes are a backdrop for bags.”

The fringe fad also hasn’t faded, although moderation is key. Keep it soft and delicate unless you want to look like you’ve stepped from a rodeo.

Chain shoulder straps may not be practical, but they’re right on trend. To protect your shoulders, look for handles with leather centers. And this season the longer the straps, the better. That’s right ladies: cross body bags are back. I love when practicality and style work in harmony!

As the leaves change on the trees, so do the favored handbag hues. Purples and violets are big, as are reds and deep pinks. Blue fans should look to lapis and navy, while gray is an “interesting neutral.”

It seems we may also have seen the last of the oversized handbags. While we still love it large, this season’s purses aren’t quite as overwhelming. Slouchy hobos are out and structured purses, including doctor’s bags and satchels, are in.

That’s a lot to take in, but Ms Frayard says it’s not hard to stay current this season. Consider modern classics like the Marc Jacobs Stam bags and iconic Chanel purses. They have the quilted finishes and chain straps you need to stay at the forefront of fall fashions.

If I had to pick out a brand that I’d imagine Maria Sharapova collaborating with for a fashion line, it would probably be something like Nike. Oh wait, maybe that’s because she already has a Maria Sharapova for Nike collection involving sportswear. The blonde, leggy tennis star with Nike is an easy pair to picture. Cole Haan and Sharapova is another thing.

I’m not saying the gal isn’t stylish, but I was definitely a bit caught off guard when I heard about the new Maria Sharapova Collection for Cole Haan. Sports and fashion don’t always go together well, but I’ll admit that I’m impressed with what the duo has produced.

In an interview with Style List, Sharapova elaborated on her excitement about the project:

“Designing has been a great new component of my life. I’m known as a tennis player, but collaborating with Cole Haan is an opportunity that I am excited to embrace. I love the creative process, from the initial sketches to seeing the final product.”

The mini collection of satchels, clutches, hobos, boots, heels and ballet flats is not overwhelmingly original, but I like what I’m seeing here. The prices aren’t too bad either. The bags range from $248 to $428, while the shoes are priced between $138 and $328.

The Maria Sharapova by Cole Haan line officially launches today but is already available for purchase on Cole Haan’s website. The items should be in stores this fall.

Tartan might not be a look that suits everyone’s taste, but I happen to love this checkered fabric when it is done well. It’s not a fabric pattern that you want to include in every outfit you wear, unless you’re part of a Scottish clan; however, it’s a fun addition to a wardrobe, especially for accessories.

Since we’re now nearly into September, I thought it appropriate to look at a bag in this checked-cloth. Although it’s not exclusively a fall and winter style, I think most people tend to wear it during the cooler seasons. It’s just one of those fabrics that calls to mind winter hats, cashmere scarves, and mittens.

Dooney & Bourke obviously had that in mind when creating the Tartan Erica Sac. Although the print is on a season-less cotton canvas, it’s the touches of suede trim that clue you in to when you would most likely carry this handbag. The bit of brown suede along the bottom and on the top corners is just enough to set off the multi-colored checks yet not distract the eye from the main focus.

With its large hobo shape, the Erica offers enough space for everyday necessities plus a few extra items. One great organizational feature, which I always appreciate in a purse, is the center zippered divider for storing those valuables you need to keep safe but get to easily. A few other pockets add to the amount of available storage, including a pocket specifically for your cell phone.

For $130, the Tartan Erica hobo might not take you through every season of the year, but it will get you through fall and winter quite fashionably.

For the past century, Halston has been on the forefront of refined elegance. They’ve dressed some of the most rich, famous, and fabulous women in history, and while the popularity of the label has waxed and waned, the quality of their designs never has.

To be honest, I’m a bit surprised by the eye-popping color of this clutch, and also by the plastic-y, excuse me, “plexi” closure. Not because Halston never veers from their particular brand of understated luxury, but because they’ve incorporated a major trend (neon) and a retro cliché (plexi) and pulled it off with panache.

The color of the clutch is a little off of your usual neon, which takes it away from that played out 80’s look and puts it in a retro class of its own. And the more minty green of the logo closure clashes in a way that seems just perfect, and totally 70’s. I also really dig how the shape of the logo plate mimics the overall shape of the clutch. It’s a geometric dream.

Under the flap, you’ll find a zippered pocket and neon green patent trim. Plus, the whole top of the bag opens up to one big pocket, so you can use this bag a lot of different ways. It would add the perfect punch to a slinky LBD or mismatch beautifully with a Pucci print dress.

In my humble opinion, there is nothing that makes a handbag seem more luxurious than some comfy luxurious padded quilting. With an elegant and classy diamond quilting exterior, this pretty clutch from Hobo international is ready for every party you can throw at it.

Whilst the burgundy cushioning is sexy and reminiscent of Chanel handbags, the design of this clutch is actually very simple. The silver hardware frame adds a touch of elegance, but if you are after something a little different? Well, this sophisticated clutch probably ain’t it.

Whilst I am a great fan of drawing inspirations from big brands such as Chanel, I am also aware that if a clutch costs $128, you want it to have a unique and convincing luxury characteristic. Whilst the outside looks may not be that special, the inside does have some great and functional touches.

One side of this Hobo international clutch opens out to reveal a sexy and useful red leather lined notes purse/wallet with space for your ID and everything you need. It then also opens with a sexy kiss clasp closure revealing a neutral floral interior. Classy.

All in all this is a posh yet different bag that is a lot more inventive on the inside than on the quilted outside.

Halston epitomizes chic urban fashions with this sexy Allen satchel.

The front reminds me of the night sky with its black suede finish dotted with tiny star-like studs. The dark fabric is complemented by buttery soft black leather panels on the side. The combination of black on black is classic, but I’m not sure that suede will look so pristine after a few seasons.

While it’s bound to show a little wear in time, when the suede is at its peak the silver studs and matching hardware really pops. The tiny studs we see on the body are mirrored with larger square studs on the strap’s comfy shoulder rest. It might look a little edgy, but its creature comforts like this that make a high-end bag like this so appealing.

The interior is generous without being overwhelming; just the right size to stash the things you need without dominating your look. But I wish there were a few more pockets. While the zippered pouch gives us a secure space for smaller items, some slip pockets would have made all the difference.

At $2,195, the Allen seems overly expensive for its leather and suede finish. But if you’ve got the cash to spare, it’ll look brilliant with black skinny jeans, some spiked ankle boots, and loads of attitude!

This fun Global Elements skirt purse is something dramatically different for this party season.

The floaty, flirty skirt shape is effortlessly eye-catching. The billowing body is offset by thousands of rainbow colored sequins and beads. I love the look, but I’m a little nervous about what will happen once the bag is full of your evening essentials. You’ll probably need to pare back the party gear if you hope to retain that lovely flowing form.

I imagine the inside pockets will help the skirt purse keep its shape. By stashing your goodies in the wall pouches, you’ll stop the base sinking down. If you’re not too concerned about the shape, the skirt purse has an awful lot of space so you could easily take it from day to night. Although you’re going to struggle to retrieve anything from those pointed corners!

I don’t like to spend a lot of money on my after-five accessories, so I think this skirt purse is perfectly priced. The $48 retail value seems a steal for a bag with such a unique look.

Who in the world is Joy Gryson? That’s what I found myself wondering when I recently came across multiple headlines involving her name. I must be way behind on my fashion lines, but this one was a new one for me.

This one-time director of design for Marc Jacobs Handbag and Accessories started her own collection of leather handbags and shoes back in the fall of 2006. With her own unique urban styling of high-quality Italian leather, Gryson is one brand I’ll be keeping in mind from now on.

Well, now this Korean-born, New York-raised designer is teaming up with established European luxury brand MCM, a company that has recently been working to make a comeback in the fashion world. The collaboration brings together Gryson’s edgy, downtown style with MCM’s longstanding reputation.

The advertising campaign stars new favorite in the industry, Coco Rocha. Sporting her recent hair color change from red to “almost black“, the Rocha models the contemporary handbags with perfect panache in a photo shoot styled by Kathryn Neale Shaffer.

The Joy Gryson for MCM collection of bags will hit Saks and MCM boutiques at the end of the month.

It pays to have friends in high places, and they don’t come much bigger than Simon Cowell. The X Factor judge recently flexed his considerable influence to get a Chanel handbag for last year’s winner, Alexandra Burke.

Simon wasn’t deterred by the demand for the hard to get bag. He made a few calls, schmoozed a little, and had the prized handbag in time for Alexandra’s 21st.
