A pencil case may seem like a strange thing to buy from a designer like Kate Spade, but her pencil cases are actually pretty popular for a variety of functions. I know people who use them as business card or receipt pouches, or even cosmetics bags (though in canvas I might not recommend that). There’s no doubt this is a more affordable way to get your hands on something Kate that will look uber chic when you pull it out of your bag no matter what you use it for.

Kenneth Jay Lane embodies art deco style with its Eros clutch. It’s named after the Greek god of love and lust, and its inspiring equal measures of both in me!

The black patent leather finish is sleek and smooth. This sophisticated leather is lovely but basic, allowing the pale green stone accent to take center stage. This lovely gem is embellished with a smattering of rhinestones. Decorative bars flank the push lock closure, adding an extra dash of style to this simple design.

The slim profile looks chic, but it makes storage nearly impossible. I love the inclusion of a small mirror for make-up touch-ups, but I’m not sure where I’d stash my cosmetics! With little space on offer, I suppose the lack of shoulder strap isn’t surprising. Where would we hide it when we weren’t using it? Still, once a night wears on I long for this modern convenience.

There are a few practical setbacks, but the chic styling of the Eros makes me want to forgive them all. This is one little purse that knows how to makes a big impression.

Move over YSL Roady Tote, you’ve got some competition for the newest gotta-have-it handbag for Hollywood celebrities. Tod’s G-Bag is making its way around town and popping up on quite a few famous shoulders.

Although the G-Bag is not a brand-new design for the label, its popularity seems to have increased exponentially in recent months. Gwyneth Paltrow, a loyal fan of the brand, was first seen with the bag in Tod’s spring/summer 2009 ad campaign, and it has only gained momentum from there.

It makes sense then for Tod’s to keep bringing it back with a few tweaks here and an additional color option there. Although some of the celebrities’ versions of the tote differ a bit from one another, they are all equally enviable and chic.

Julia Roberts and Halle Barry have been rocking their classic khaki G-Bag for some time, while Jessica Alba spiced up the look a bit with a fun snakeskin material. This Tod’s tote might not be a financial stretch for well-paid celebrities, but $1,665 is quite  a chunk of change for the rest of us. I guess we’ll have to stick with more affordable roomy totes like the B. Makowsky Nassau.

Alexis Hudson has combined urban form and everyday functionality in its gorgeous fall 2009 collection. Tough metal hardware is balanced with buttery-soft leather throughout the line, which designer Rachelle Copeland calls “biker babe meets Sophia Loren.”

But it’s not all rock and roll. We see elements of boho chic in the Camille clutch, a tassel-enhanced purse which will transform even a business suit into a great date ensemble. The Charlie is a more basic clutch, with its chic everyday envelope style. Then there’s the Bohem, a slouchy bag crafted from lush lambskin or gorgeous graphite snakeskin. Finally there’s the no nonsense Jasper. Its multiple zipper pockets and generous space make this an ideal traveling companion for girls on the go.

The new Alexis Hudson bags are in store today. They’re reasonably affordable for designer handbags with such high quality fabrics, with prices ranging from $150 to $495. As an added incentive, the on-trend label is also offering free shipping for all online sales until September 30.

I’ve come to expect anything from retro to rocker to downright kooky from Betsey Johnson. When she’s not talking to the media about her desire to retire, this popular designer is busy creating styles to fit a variety of tastes.

Edgy rock-and-roll is definitely a look we’ve seen from Betsey Johnson before in bags like the Rock Star hobo. Although I generally like the vibe that a few well-placed, rocker-inspired studs bring to a bag, this Made In The Fade satchel seems more like the real thing.

The handbag’s lightly weathered leather material adds the perfect touch of nonchalant attitude to a somewhat traditional silhouette. The only obvious addition of rock-and-roll is the tiniest row of black studs on each of the handles’ decorative buckles, as if to remind us what style it is exuding.

In addition to the kind of edgy style that Kate Moss would probably wear, the Made In The Fade bag also has a hint of bohemian flair with its hanging tassel detail and perforated leather strips. It might not be dripping with fringe or made from crocheted bamboo, but I think it would still appeal to boho-chic women.

The Betsey Johnson Made In The Fade collection also comes in a bucket bag style or tote. This large satchel retails for $295.

Vintage materials are all the rage at the moment, as this patent purse with retro Pyrex handles from Stuart Weitzman goes to show.

In bright patent shades of magenta or yellow, this small clutch has an eye catching design. The handles are fashioned from a disk of stylish Pyrex, once the domain of the 50s housewife and now the latest designer material. To further emphasize the artsy handle, the patent leather is a graduated shade working towards the disk.

As with all handles like this, I worry that they may look good but be uncomfortable to hold. I also can’t work out whether I like the exceptionally glossy nature of the leather, although that is largely personal taste!

What I do like, however, is the coordinating patent trim that defines the shape and adds straight lines to a curved piece. I also enjoy the cream satin lining that adds an air of sophistication to the design.

All in all this is a cute and daring evening purse with a couple of interesting, if not practical, features.

This is a fantastic back-to-school bag for so many reasons. Kenneth Cole New York is a great youth brand; its bags are stylish and fun, and good quality for the affordable price. This is also a classic style that would serve a high school or college student well. Plus it has an exciting purple color and creative seaming and gathered details that take it a bit above a plain hobo, although it does also come in black and white for conservative tastes!

To some, around $200 may seem like a lot for a bag for a teenager (or a grown up!) but if a girl is coveting Coach or other brand name bags this may be a happy compromise that will probably last almost as long.

The best parts of this bag to me are the diagonal seaming and barbell-fastened gathers at the bottom of the bag. This is a great lesson in how to take a classic, traditional shape and jazz it up a bit. I also really like this purple.

The bag is small, but that can be good for school if you’re also carrying books or a backpack. It will certainly hold a wallet, keys and all the makeup you need to get through the day.

Cole Haan is known for its leathers, so it makes sense that the brand would create a Soft Collection designed to showcase its “supple leather fabrication.” And, as I always find it silly to make super soft bags too structured, a drawstring hobo like this one seems like the perfect shape for this line.

Do note that this bag is pebbled leather, which is not to everyone’s taste. But of course there are some people who prefer it, and it does lend itself to the “soft” idea.

The drawstring detail is the main feature of this bag. It allows for expansion of the purse if you happen to have a lot of stuff to carry that day. The string is laced through satin-finish grommets and secures with a tab. A signature logo tag hangs from the shoulder strap.

Inside find optical weave jacquard lining, a zip pocket, a cell phone pocket and PDA pocket. Hobos aren’t known for their organization, but this bag isn’t so large that items will get lost in the bottom and these pockets will help a lot.

As more and more consumers choose not to buy leather, it’s becoming more and more a fashionable and eco-conscious choice to purchase synthetic leather bags. But there’s still not a lot of them out there from brands you would typically go to for leather or “fashionable” accessories.

Nine West may not be the height of fashion, but many women have a shoe or bag or two from the mass-market mid-priced brand, so it seems like a good place to start a fashionable faux-leather bag search.

This Nine West Justine bag has the convertibility of a flap bag in its favor. You can use it as a taller tote with the double handles, or fold the top over and use it as a shoulder bag with the longer strap.

Beige cotton webbing decorates the handles, large flap pocket and smaller zipper pocket on the front of the bag. Those large flap pockets can be handy for receipts and last minute papers you’re stuffing in your bag, but I never find them too useful for actual organization. They’re too thin to put anything useful into without looking bulky and I tend to forget whatever’s in there until I clean out the bag. The small zippered pocket might fit a cell phone, but again it could look bulky. I’m not sure how functional these pockets are, but they look cute.

The interior front wall zip pocket and two gadget pockets are sure to be more useful, allowing you to grab your wallet and cell phone quickly without digging.

Shiny silver-toned hardware and contrast top stitching round out the style details of this bag, which is basic and versatile. White is always an issue for an everyday bag, but since this is faux leather it could be easily cleaned.

With price tags generally pushing $1,000 and beyond, Be & D is one of those fashion accessories labels that I love to covet despite the fact that it is decidedly out of my handbag shopping budget. In an industry where certain looks can sometimes start to pop up in more than one brand’s collection, this company seems to have a voice of its own.

Its styles aren’t shockingly different than other brands like Rebecca Minkoff or Marc Jacobs, but its handbags do tend to be quite unique. It seems that Be & D also like to stick to its favorites as well as bringing in some fresh looks, though, as its collection of fall 2009 handbags exhibits.

Although there’s some new flavors in the mix, we also see that it has revisited its one-of-a-kind Kan Kan tote as well as the Cosette satchel. However, there are a couple of trendy, unexpected additions including metal studs and leopard print. I’m not talking about a handful of studs on a shoulder strap; the Garbo tote in khaki is actually covered in them. I was also completely surprised to see the Woodstock hobo in full leopard print.

It’s interesting to see this injection of new style into Be & D’s handbags, though they hardly needed anything else to convince me to look at them.
