Rebecca Minkoff isn’t the only one recognizing the hole in the bridal bag industry. The latest label looking to fill the gap is Fossati.

The brand looks to create “a limited-edition evening bag that would work for any special occasion but especially cater to brides on their wedding day.”

While Rebecca Minkoff may have the big designer name, Fossati’s accessories offer a little more luxury. Its wedding line is the result of a collaboration with renowned bridal and fine arts photographer, Laurie Tennent.

The Venice Evening Bag, a bridal favorite, pairs silver hardware with hand-picked lizard skin. The exotic leather is the ideal accompaniment for that big white dress, but after the ceremony it’d work just as well with everyday evening attire or even blue jeans.

“We wanted to create a limited-edition evening bag that would work for any special occasion but especially cater to brides on their wedding day,” explained designer Catherine Fossati Healey. “Every bride should have an exquisite handbag that compliments her wedding couture and is exquisite enough to pass on to her daughter.”

Anyone who’s ever planned a wedding knows bridal attire is never cheap. So perhaps it’s not so surprising to see the Fossati bags priced at almost $1000. That’s a big chunk of change, but unlike the ideal wedding dress we can at least use it after the big day’s done!

Jessica Jensen takes the hobo back to basics with its Artisan bag.

The style is simple and chic, without all the accents we tend to see. Forget fringing and studs: this is minimalism at its most pure. That might not suit the season’s taste for embellishments, but the Artisan isn’t about catering to fads.

The only accent is the single knot at the top of the handle. By paring back the design, we focus on the buttery soft finish of the leather and its subtle grain design.

But I think the designer may have taken the minimalist philosophy too far, forgetting practicality in the process. This is an enormous bag, so it really calls for more pockets than the lone slip provided. We also need some protective feet on the base to keep that super soft leather safe. With its timeless styling, the Artisan really needs the features to help it last for a few seasons.

My tip is to choose some of the darker colors to hide those scuffs and stains. Steer clear of white and taupe, and opt for more practical black or chocolate instead!

Pamela Anderson seems like an odd choice for a designer label ad campaign. When other brands are showing off their products on the waif-like bodies of supermodels like Kate Moss and Raquel Zimmerman, Vivienne Westwood is opting for busty and brassy with Anderson.

This actually isn’t the first time that the Baywatch babe has collaborated with the edgy designer, though. Pamela showed up in Westwood’s ads last season and even walked one of her runway shows, to the surprise of Fashion Week attendees earlier this year.

In the designer’s Gold Label ad campaign for this fall/winter season, the voluptuous blonde poses with Vivienne and Vivienne’s much-younger husband Andreas Kronthaler. The look is both raw and unstructured and even kind of random.

I’m not sure what the purpose or vision is supposed to be, but at least we get a great view of some Gold Label handbags in the front of this one. They might not be on full display due to the busy stuff going on around them, but I can spy a few nice shapes and details.

Kathy Van Zeeland cracks me up with her never-ending list of quirky handbag names. There’s the Delicious, the Sexy Back, and now the Hot Stud.

I’m not usually quite sure what it is about each bag that inspires the offbeat names, but this Hot Stud satchel is a little more obvious than some. Van Zeeland’s brand is right on trend with the increasingly popular studded detail that adorns the front and sides of this satchel.

The interesting thing about this use of the trendy feature is that it is not limited to one metallic tone. Instead, the Hot Stud mixes things up with some silvery and some brass-like tones combined in a random, almost-haphazard sort of way down the front panel of the bag. I keep thinking that there must be some hidden logo or other lettering in the positioning of the colors, but I’ve yet to find one. It appears that the detail is just random for the sake of being different, and I kind of like that.

Like many satchels in the under-$100 price range, this one is not real leather. The brown synthetic is a nice color, though, as well as the other neutral options. No Kathy Van Zeeland design is complete without a bold piece of logo hardware, though. There’s nothing simple or understated about the large heart and crown signature emblem on the front of this satchel. It’s even more expected for the brand’s bags than a unique name.

This Quilted Nappa Hobo is a great example of Miu Miu’s fashion forward design perspective. The quilted and studded leather is on trend, but in a way that seems refreshing. These tiny studs dot the bag and punctuate the quilted pattern in a modern, elegant way. The theme carries over into the rolled leather handle, which is sprinkled with rows of grommets on either side, and laced.

The gold hardware glitters against the black backdrop of buttery soft nappa leather. The triangular quilting pattern contrasts nicely with the soft, slouchy shape of the bag. The overall effect is extremely versatile, and I think this hobo will be a hit uptown and downtown.

This tote around town also has a practical side. At 15″ x 11″ x 5″, this hobo is generous enough to rock every day, and carry over into evening. There’s a detachable shoulder strap for those days when you need to fill this bag to capacity, and an interior zippered pocket to keep you organized.

Totally Tubular is right on trend with its colorful 80s design.

No matter which Uh-O you choose, you’ll be impressed with its practicality. That starts at the price, which is just under than magic $100 mark. The fabric finish might not be luxurious, but it’s heavy and hard wearing for everyday use. Two pockets up front and another two on the sides give you plenty of places for storing the essentials you need on hand. Each closes with Velcro, a fastener which balances your need for security and easy access.

With so many pockets outside, I was surprised to see just one inside. Thankfully though this zippered compartment is much larger than most. The generous space might be basic, but that pared back design does make it easy to transport bulky goods like novels and laptops.

It’s not for everybody, but fans of the brand won’t be disappointed with this versatile Harajuku Lovers tote.

British organization Bottletop is creating recycled handbags for charity.

The brand’s founders, Cameron Saul and Oliver Wayman, turn soda pop ringpulls into edgy eco-friendly purses. The bags are crafted in Salvador, Brazil, helping to generate income for the poverty-stricken South American area. The region’s homeless collect ringpulls for the label as a way of making some cash.

“It’s nice that they know they can get a bit of money from bringing them to the centre,” said Mr. Saul, who pays £3 per kilogram of metal.

Each bag uses about 1000 ringpulls, ensuring the metal tabs don’t end up in landfill. They are crafted by a Brazilian women’s collective, saving the employees from becoming maids or worse, prostitutes. Money generated from the sale of the bags, which retails between £30 and £70 in British outlets, helps to fund sexual health awareness programs in Third World nations.

The handbags have become a hit with socially-conscious celebs including Peaches Geldof, Annie Lennox, and Natalie Imbruglia. They are available online, or through Fenchurch’s  in London’s West End or the Eden Project in Cornwall.
