Truthfully, Roberto Cavalli has never been one of my favorite designers. His baroque, super embellished style is usually just a little bit too over-the-top for me. But this black suede clutch really defies what I’ve come to expect from Cavalli.

It is embellished, of course, but it’s not overdone. In fact, I’d say that Cavalli is following through on the stud trend with a much lighter touch than most. The black suede resonates with a lot of today’s 80’s styles, and will look great with the soon to be ubiquitous suede over the knee boot.

The collection of studs on the front of the clutch gives it variety. It isn’t just the same old row after row of silver studs. And the snake chain strap is gorgeous all on its own. Plus, it’s set close to the bag so it’d the perfect clutch strap: too short for the shoulder, just right for holding the clutch in the palm of your hand.

This badgirl chic bag may be the perfect complement to this fall’s styles, but I think that it’s elegant enough to transcend the trends and outlast the fall.

The Mademoiselle collection from Guess has the kind of easy bags you can wear on a regular basis knowing that they’ll go with most casual, everyday outfits.

I wouldn’t carry the Mademoiselle N/S Shopper to a night at the theatre, but this handbag has plenty of other practical uses. Guess isn’t the only brand to offer this type of convertible tote, though. The affordable Nine West Justine Tote and sophisticated Ghibli Croco Stamped Tote are just two other examples of the popular and practical style.

I love the way Marc Jacobs interprets trends, old and new, and then reinvigorates them in modern downtown designs. Bags like this perfect pony skin bag are just what I’m talking about.

There has been a major rush lately for quilted bags. All those Chanel caviar bags have been making a comeback in a major way, and spawning rip offs from Bergdorf’s to Kmart. This quilted bag, though, looks more like its doing its own thing. I have really never seen quilted pony skin, and certainly in not in an eyepopping shade like this fabulous fuchsia.

The square shape of the bag works perfectly with the square quilted pattern, and I also really like the way the square push clasps in the corners of the top flap mimic the overall square theme. The exposed zipper around the bottom of the bag is pure genius. Not only does it look good, but it allows you to expand the size of the bag, for days when you need just a tad more room. And, all the bright gold tone hardware accents and chain strap contrast beautifully with the cool hot pink hue.

I’m just crazy for this bag, and part of the reason is that while I can see elements that Jacobs has borrowed from the past and present, he’s combined them in a way that looks uniquely of the moment, not to mention uniquely Marc Jacobs.

Rebecca Minkoff is applying her contemporary design flair to the bridal industry with the launch of her “I Do” collection. Rebecca obviously believes in the range, as she carried one of these very bags on her own wedding day in June.

The most exciting part is that all bags can be completely customized. Brides can send the designer their choice of lace and satin. This ensures the accessories will coordinate with the bridal party’s attire. That makes the prices – between $195 and $215 – seem incredibly reasonable. Especially since, unlike so many other wedding day indulgences, these designer bags could easily be incorporated into your everyday evening essentials.

But there is a catch. Brides must place a special order of at least four pieces. Still, they’d make fantastic bridesmaids gifts for your gal pals if your big day budget can stretch that far. Wedding Bags on eBay

Handbag makers seem to be getting more and more creative when it comes to using recycled materials for their designs. We’ve progressed from recycled bottles (still a favorite) to billboards and now to deck chairs.

In a headline that made me do a double take to make sure I read it correctly, London’s Royal Parks Foundation has decided to find a second life for the canvas on their deck chairs, which reside at their various parks throughout the city. The charity is going green with the material by enlisting designer Bill Amberg to craft it into limited-edition tote bags.

Amberg is no stranger to working with unique materials, though. The designer is well-versed in applying innovative techniques to creating sustainable handbags.

The canvas isn’t what you might expect from deck chairs, though. As part of a previous “Deckchair Dreams” initiative, the foundation enlisted artists and celebrities to design their own pattern depending on their personal significance of the park. The canvases have been cleaned and restored by the charity and will now have their chance to shine again.

All proceeds from the sales will benefit the Royal Parks Foundation. Get your own deck chair canvas tote bag online for around $90.

My deciding factor for considering the purchase of an expensive designer handbag is to find something one-of-a-kind or one that I simply can’t live without. Personally, I can’t imagine spending $875 on a gray leather messenger bag. However, if you find yourself shopping for bags in that price range and you’d get quite a bit of use out of it, this Bally Regis Messenger is a great choice.

The unisex look of the Regis makes it appropriate for men or women. Perhaps men might prefer the clean lines and practical appearance of this messenger, but I can also imagine women carrying it for a safari or military style accessory.

The Regis’ practicality is its best quality, however, and what will probably attract people most. There are quite a few organizational pockets inside and outside of the bag. An adjustable strap with a significant drop allows for the perfect fit whether you prefer to wear it on your shoulder or across the body. The front strap buckles down, although this is more decorative than anything since there’s also a snap closure.

This Bally messenger’s kidskin leather is uptown quality mixed with a downtown design. I suppose the caliber of material is what justifies the price more than anything else. The Regis might be out of reach more many budgets, but it’s worth it if you can afford it.

Marni is one of those young, hip labels that is known for having its finger on the pulse of cutting edge fashion. Which is why I was surprised when I saw this tote. I thought to myself, “Isn’t that whole furry, Uggs-y thing kind of over?” Apparently not.

I have to admit that despite my initial dismissal of the bag, there is something appealing about it. How can there not be? It’s furry and soft, like a little pet or something. Personally, I’m not sure I want to carry a gremlin for a handbag, but I know this bag will find a lot of takers. It’s too “bohemian decadence” not to.

What I do love about this bag is the strap. The leather and chain combination is spot on, and I love the combination of the rich brown leather with the soft gray fur. The huge size of the bag will also give it an audience, as it’s basically the size of my overnight bag.

Overall, I think this Alpaca tote has a semi-mysterious charm that a lot of women will find irresistible. If, that is, they’re willing to swallow the $2,440 price tag. You could have an actual pet for less. Maybe even one that looks just like this bag.

I can never make up my mind about Jimmy Choo handbags. The iconic brand and legendary status make their evening bags exciting, and the materials are luxurious, but sometimes they forget to produce something a little “different.”

This bag is a great example. Taken as a generic handbag, the slouchy shape and buckled handle are quite cute. It is once when you add the Jimmy Choo name and the astounding price tag that things start to look a little unreasonable.

All the complaining out of the way, however, and what you have in front of you is a pretty black evening bag, a staple for any wardrobe. Much like the famous little black dress, a simple design and luxury feel will accompany you for any occasion. With the little decorative clasp and Swarovski crystals you have real class and a purse perfect for an evening out!

All in all this is a comfy and spacious shoulder bag with luxury crepe exterior and an expensive crystal front. It still costs a lot at $537, but at least it is Jimmy Choo!

Marc Jacobs, king of the West Village, oh how many Carrie Bradshaw wannabes he has spawned. Personally, I think the man’s a genius, and one of the few American designers to make others across the Atlantic take notice. But, this bag has got to go.

It’s a lot more Elle Woods than Carrie Bradshaw, and I do not mean that as a compliment. Seriously, it looks like Juicy Couture. On a a bad day. The combination of hot pink sequins and the loosely fastened gold pyramid studs looks cheap and haphazard, and while I guess the attached leather wallet is practical, the rest of the bag completely distracts from it.

$595 for this baby. No, I’m not joking. It’s on the low end, price-wise, of Mr. Jacobs’ designs, as well it should be, but it still seems high for something that looks so cheesy. It looks like the design team shook up a bunch of bag trends – 80’s styles, pyramid studs – and out came this monstrosity.

This is really a first for me, as I can’t think of a single nice thing to say about this Marc Jacobs bag. Except that maybe he’ll just pull it from the shelves ASAP and we can pretend it was just a bad dream.

It’s difficult to resist the retro charms of this patent leather Leah purse from Elaine Turner.

It’s called a minaudiere, but it’s a lot sleeker than the other purses that share its name. While Judith Leiber and Kathrine Baumann cover theirs in jewels, this one is all polish and poise. The retro red patent leather features large quilted diamonds for that extra bit of flair. The leather rose accent might be a little too much flair for some, but I think it gives this purse a fun, flirty femininity.

The bamboo frame gives this purse a chic, structured look, but it also restricts the already small storage space. Most of us would always like a little more space inside a clutch, but the narrow profile and hard finish make this an even greater concern than usual. The lack of chain strap is another downside, although it’s not altogether unexpected considering this purse’s retro styling.

The lipstick red shade is entirely appropriate for this purse’s fun 50s look, but it may be a little loud for some. If you’re game though, this clutch will make a big impression with a flared black dress and sexy kitten heels!
