Louis Vuitton has injected a touch of whimsy into its winter 2009 campaign. The French fashion house stays true to its classic image with these advertisements which pay tribute to Charles Perrault.

While you might not recognize the name, I know you know Charles Perrault’s work. The French writer became regarded as one of the greatest storytellers in the world after penning beloved fairytales Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots and Cinderella. He died in 1703, but these tales live on as generation after generation of children discovers them.

Louis Vuitton recreates the magical worlds of Charles Perrault, with vivid blue backgrounds, secret gardens, enormous spiderwebs, and plenty of tiny animal friends. Peeking through the keyhole here, I’m also impressed with some of the new bag designs with deviate from those classic shapes plastered with tedious brown and tan signature print. Perhaps there’s a little pixie dust in the Louis Vuitton factory?

Like the young teenage minx who inspired its name, the Christian Louboutin Lolita has come to tempt and tease us.

It’s hard to resist that softly pleated ivory design. The buttery soft leather falls so femininely, and there’s little to detract from it. The shape is simple, and the delicate gold Louboutin nameplate and complementary stitching are subtle enough not to distract.

And you tell yourself that it’s large enough to suit everyday use, and it is. The signature red lining helps to tempt us too, calling to us to make use of those practical zippered and open pockets.

But it’s a bit of a ruse really. This purse is nowhere near as practical as it tries to convince us. How quickly do you think that crisp leather will age if you’re carrying the purse every day? White hides nothing, and without so much as protective feet on the base you’ll really need to handle this delicate creature with care.

And then there are those chain shoulder straps. I love the way the golden links pop against the white leather, but I’d probably hate them by the end of the day. This is definitely a bag that would rather keep up appearances than save your shoulder.

Nevertheless, the Lolita is still calling to me and it’ll take some serious willpower to resist her!

It doesn’t seem like quite the right season to be discussing woven fabric handbags, but it’s definitely appropriate to bring up plaid during the fall and winter. Well, that’s what makes this Kate Spade Austin Small Coal Tote somewhat of an oddity because it actually combines the two elements.

By weaving together natural, cozy yarn material with manmade, patent vinyl, Kate Spade manages to create a patterned handbag that is as appropriate for the winter as it could be for the spring. Pair it with a solid-colored pea coat and boots, and you’ve got an unexpected accessory. Change that outfit to khakis and a button-down this spring, and the look is classic.

For a tote that has the word small in its name, I was surprised to see the actual dimensions of the Austin Small Coal bag. It’s not exactly what I’d deem diminutive, though there are larger totes available in the world of bags.

The rather roomy interior is lined in Kate Spade’s signature logo lining material and has one zippered pocket for storing small things. There is no closure, which isn’t completely shocking on a tote; however, some sort of magnetic snap or flap is always appreciated. This versatile woven carry-all retails for $345.

Etienne Aigner always manages to produce elegant and timeless designs despite the fact that the costs hover around the reasonable $100 mark.

This satchel isn’t at all cutting edge. Instead, the purse looks back towards a more traditional time, with stylish art deco buckles and classic leather lines. From the cut to the stitching, this looks like a purse that will last for years and suit any situation.

Whilst the disadvantage of this is a purse that isn’t at the forefront of fashion, that does mean that you can wear this same design for many a year and through many a trend. It will also transcend neatly from formal office wear to casual day wear, although I doubt you would want to lug it around a party or club!

As a functional purse this really cuts the mustard, equipped as it is with good length yet attractive handles, a nice supportive base, and a compartmentalized interior. These are the boring bits and pieces that can transform a smart good-looking back into a wardrobe staple.

Sure the materials aren’t the very best in the world, but this is a lot of classic bag for the money.

There’s something so frothy and fun about the Le Trente shopping bag from Christian Dior. But don’t accuse this purse of being frivolous!

Those girly looks come from the buttery soft leather, which gathers in pleats around the drawstring and bubbles over with the foldover cuff. The effect gives this purse the kind of flirty charm we don’t often see in shoppers.

But don’t think that Christian Dior has forgotten about functionality. The generous size makes the Le Trente perfect for a big day hitting the Christmas sales. I could probably use more than the single zippered pocket, but at least there’s the space for stashing our smaller purchases. The leather strip makes those double chain handles look much more inviting, although a few inches would probably have helped make them more manageable. And the protective metal feet might even save that lovely white leather from aging too quickly.

Like most Christian Dior purses though, the price is likely to be the real sticking point. At $1950, you might have to choose this or the family Christmas presents!

Despite their famous surname, brothers Guccio Gucci and Alessandro Gucci are going it alone. The grandsons of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci are preparing to release their own handbag label, To Be G.

“We are not doing this because our name is Gucci, nor do we want to replicate what the Gucci brand is doing. We have our own vision,” insists Guccio, who’s the designing drive behind the brand’s collection.

Their handbags may be new, but Guccio is not a newcomer to the business. He worked with his father Giorgio on the GiorgioG handbags collection and ran one of Italy’s main leather manufacturing centres.

To Be G bags are crafted from patent, cracked, woven, and buttery-soft leathers. Each displays the brand’s signature lily motif, a welcome change from the obnoxious signature prints and gaudy nameplates so many brands use.

We can expect to see the To Be G line in stores next spring. If this photo is any indication, the next generation of Gucci may just give the established fashion house a run for its money.

The Sandlin shoulder bag from Chocolate delivers a simple sophistication that we haven’t seen from the brand.

Chocolate is often all about the embellishments, whether it’s adding a strip of flowers or a quilted texture. There’s none of those trimmings here, which may disappoint long term fans but attract new ones.

The bucket shape is simple, with only two vertical zips to spice things up. At first I thought these long zippers helped the bag to expand, as they did with Diane von Furstenberg’s Carry On satchel and Lauren Merkin’s Stella tote. Instead, they open to reveal pockets. I must admit, I’m not altogether sold on the idea. They’re massive, so storage space won’t be a problem, but I’d hate to see the Sandlin’s smooth lines disturbed by tell-tale lumps and bumps.

I’d much rather take advantage of the luxuriously sized interior and the pockets inside it. Keeping everything stashed away in this secure zippered space should make your goodies more accessible and your look more stylish.

At $83, it’s no surprise that the Sandlin is synthetic but its pebbled texture does a decent impersonation. The black and white versions are classics, but I prefer the unexpected charms of this pewter purse.

It seems way too early to be talking about Valentine’s Day, yet every major designer label out there has already given us previews of their soon-to-be-released spring/summer collections. It’s just the way it goes in the fashion world … we’re pulling out our winter boots while they’re showing us linen and pastels.

As strange as it seems, we’ve already got a sneak peek at the upcoming Valentine’s Day capsule collection from Miu Miu. While hearts aren’t always my favorite fashion detail for accessories or clothing, they manage to make a decent appearance in this collection without too much annoying frippery.

I wouldn’t call Miu Miu’s use of the detail simple, by any means, but the preview of the new looks doesn’t make it seem like they went overboard with the theme. The pretty necklaces, shiny luggage tags, and bejeweled bags aren’t what I’d call signature Miu Miu, but they are fun and feminine. They also aren’t a far cry from the label’s jeweled “stage bags” that we can expect from their Resort 2010 collection.
