Gucci shows so many designers how it’s done with the Guccissima, a handbag whose signature print doesn’t obnoxiously boast the brand.

Instead, the interlocking Gs fade subtly into the background of the sunshine yellow leather. You know they’re there, but they’re not distracting. And while the bold color may not suit everybody, I’ll take it any day over the drab browns and khakis so often used for signature fabric.

The Guccissima is called a hobo, but it’s far removed from those boho-chic bags we typically see. There’s no slouch, and the shape is closer to a Cole Haan triangle tote than a traditional hobo. But whatever you want to call it, this purse is an alluring combination of sophistication and fun.

The interior is generous, but not as well appointed as I’d like. A lone zipper pocket is all we get to keep our small items in order. That single compartment is just not big enough to save bits and pieces from ending up in the corners of the purse.

I like this purse, but I don’t know if I like it enough to spend the $1800 retail on it. Thankfully Amazon has discounted the Guccissima by more than half, making it a much more tempting proposition.

Jalda may offer some fairly unexpected bag materials like stingray and eel skin, but even this brand has its version of the ever-present and oh-so-popular croc-embossed leather handbag.

The Jalda Bean Clutch, a favorite style from the label, gets its name from the bean-shaped cutout handle. The hardware takes front seat when the purse is folded over to carry as a clutch. The detail gives the Bean Clutch a bit of a retro feel, though the vibe is somewhat subtle.

This convertible fold-over shape might be a little more practical than some handbags, but I’m not completely sold on the unfolded tote option. Like most purses with this silhouette, the Bean Clutch opens up to a vertical tote. It seems like a great feature until you realize that the cutout handle is only on one side of the opening. Even with the magnetic closure holding everything in, I’d much prefer a handle on either side, or at least a detachable strap.

However, this croc-embossed Jalda clutch is chic and stylish with its beautifully varied texture and pretty color options. For a decent imitation of the real material, this leather handbag’s $355 price tag isn’t too bad.

Stuart Weitzman is starting 2010 with a brand new accessory line. The fashion brand has joined forces with Mosaicon SpA for the handbag and leather goods collection.

While the economic crisis has hit many luxury labels hard, Stuart Weitzman sees the silver lining. Far from seeing the doom and gloom, he says the financial downturn is an opportunity to test new ideas.

“When everything is fantastic, it’s hard to find a new opening,” he explained to WWD. “People are doing well with all they’ve got. When things changed last year, opportunities arose and we began to see a real demand for a price-value relationship. What we’re offering will have the same price-value feeling as our shoes do, and when you can sell in salons and be the lowest price as we are, there’s a real opportunity to build a strong business. Our bags are marketed with the same idea.”

The new Stuart Weitzman handbags will hit selected department stores early next summer. The purses will be priced between $395 and $595.

Givenchy has been known to push fashion boundaries, but it shows remarkable restraint in creating the Eclipse satchel.

The classic good looks start with the lovely black leather finish. It has a slight sheen to the pebbled surface, but it’s not as glossy as a true patent might be. It’s just enough to add interest, inviting attention without demanding it. Some may long for more color choices, but this is one of those times when a label is committed to its vision. This is a black bag, and if you don’t like it you can look elsewhere.

The curved shape is almost hobo-like, but deep seams add more structure than these bohemian bags offer. The braided handle and a splash of silver hardware are the only accents on this fairly minimal design.

Two open pouches and a zippered pocket do their best to keep this luxuriously large space organized. The Eclipse is probably a little deep for just a few pockets, but that amount is more than many designers offer.

Givenchy purses never come cheaply, and at $1595 this is no exception. But at least you know it’ll stay in vogue much longer than many of the brand’s accessories will!

The rumors of Lara Stone following in Madonna’s footsteps and replacing the international pop star as the new face of Louis Vuitton have proven true. The recently released sneak peek at the spring/summer 2010 shots couldn’t be more opposite to the campaigns involving Madonna.

As opposed to the singer’s porcelain doll poses and fishnet gloves, model Lara Stone is all about relaxation in the new ads. The campaign features Stone stretched out comfortably in the grass surrounded by moss, doves, and LV paraphernalia.

It’s all quite bohemian-chic, free-spirited, and a little Brigitte Bardot-inspired, if you ask me. This seems to fit with the vibe that Louis Vuitton was going for, according to Marc Jacobs:

“After our successful collaboration with Madonna, we are very happy to be working once again with Steven Meisel on the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2010 fashion campaign,” says artistic director Marc Jacobs. “Because the collection loosely took its cues from the idea of the new age traveler, we decided to create a green, outdoorsy set that would evoke a spirit of peace and love. To model the clothes, we wanted a modern, iconic, sexy beauty … It had to be Lara Stone.”

Exotic animal skins or materials that have been embossed to give that appearance are quite the rage right now, but I’m not sure that many women would put this particular animal’s hide at the top of their wish list for handbag texture.

In fact, I had to do a double take when I saw that this Inge Christopher clutch is embossed with a texture to resemble armadillo skin. Armadillo isn’t exactly what I’d classify as high fashion since it typically renders images of cowboy boots and buckles in my own head. Growing up in the south, it wasn’t completely abnormal to spot one on the side of the road, which makes me kind of cringe to think of carrying one around on my handbag.

However, I must be missing out on a trend since Inge Christopher’s use of the texture is surprisingly stylish. The unexpected overlapping of embossed leather strips draws attention to the interesting variations in the print and makes for a very pretty shape.

Because of the metallic sheen to the Armadillo Clutch, this little bag is best used for accessorizing a party outfit or other slightly dressy ensemble. Although the bronze color shown here is lovely, the pewter, light gold, and peacock blue versions are equally commendable. For times when a clutch just isn’t practical, Inge Christopher added an optional chain strap that is just substantial enough to make it practical without taking away from the style.
