This Moschino collection’s name tends to be a little misleading, but right now with the post-Christmas sales you can snag this cute purse for under $400. It’s still not exactly cheap, but it’s a lot more affordable than the regular retail price!

Awards show red carpet events never fail to disappoint fashion lovers who are watching with their eyes peeled to spot their favorite labels. The celebrities love to strut their designer duds, which makes it all the more fun for those of us viewing at home.

This year’s Golden Globe arrivals were a bit rainy, but nonetheless full of some of fashion’s biggest names such as Versace, Armani, Marchesa, and others. The majority of the actresses’ gowns were accessorized to the max with glittering diamonds and other jewels. However, let’s not forget the often overlooked red carpet accessory of the evening bag.

They might not always have a starring role when it comes to awards show fashion, but the all-important handbag is as important an accent to a red carpet outfit as hair or makeup. At this year’s Golden Globes, the stars mostly stuck with the designers we tend to associate with red carpet evening bags.

There were quite a few Roger Vivier moments including clutches carried by Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Chloe Sevigny, and Marion Cotillard. Newcomer and star of Up in the Air Anna Kendrick carried a classic Judith Leiber minaudiere as did Olivia Wilde and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Star of True Blood Anna Paquin accessorized her gold, glittering gown with an edgy Alexander McQueen black skull clutch. Ferragamo made an appearance, too, in the arms of The Young Victoria actress Emily Blunt.

Doctors have long warned us of the dangers of lugging about a heavy handbag. So it’s good news that the trend seems to be shifting; our bags are actually getting lighter. And it seems that it’s all thanks to technology.

Gadget advancements mean that we’re carrying less in our purses. Rather than stashing a laptop inside our tote, these days we’re more likely to carry a tiny Blackberry or iPhone.

A study by British retailer Debenhams says that women today carry an average of 3.3 pounds of weight in their handbags, 57% less than they carried in 2007.

“I would definitely say my handbag has got lighter over the past few years thanks to the introduction of lighter gadgets, but like most women I still pack a bag ready for anything,” says the brain behind Ultimo lingerie, Michelle Mone.

No wonder we’re seeing a shift towards smaller handbags in 2010. There’s no point carrying around an oversized purse with nothing much inside it, is there?

Miu Miu is one of those design houses that rarely gets it wrong. But even a talented label such as Miu Miu can take a misstep. And that’s just what it did with the Lurex Jeweled Shoulder Bag.

This is a case of a bag that’s quite simply overdone. I don’t mind the colorful quilted jacquard finish with its lurex overlay, even if it does look a bit like a cushion. The crystal strap is inspired, even if it’s not entirely practical. On another plainer purse, the rhinestone encrusted turnlock would have been a real feature. And tiny studs dotting the edge of a flap closure rarely go astray. But when you put all these eye-catching elements together, it’s just a bit of a mess.

After all that clutter on the exterior, the basic deep purple lining comes as a breath of fresh air. The ruched pocket is a bit more useful than the average open pouch, and the large slip pocket on the front gives us more storage than we might expect.

As designer purses go, this Miu Miu one isn’t so expensive at $950. But I can still think of many more stylish ways to spend that kind of cash.

Frye might be a company more well-known for its legendary boots worn by soldiers in past wars, but I’m definitely a fan of its equally impressive line of handbags. The label might not have a historic reputation; however, the classic designs and attention to detail are superb.

As with this Clover Tab satchel, the prices aren’t likely to bowl you over like many designer brands these days. In fact, you won’t find anything over $500 in this collection of accessories. The Clover satchel retails for a decent $398, which is still a pretty penny but not excessive given the quality of craftsmanship.

The name likely comes from the clover-like hardware on the handle anchors. Along with the signature logo plate and tiny studs on the front, this bag’s antiqued hardware perfectly matches the very traditional vibe of the purse. There isn’t much that’s modern about the design, but there’s a vintage-like beauty to it.

The satchel version comes with comfortable and practical rolled handles as well as a convenient, detachable flat strap. Other styles are available too. Look for the Clover Tab in a clutch or shoulder bag.

The massive earthquake that struck Haiti only days ago, which has left what was already one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world in a devastating state, has triggered an outpouring of sympathy and reaction around the rest of the world.

Not surprisingly, celebrities have been among the frontrunners donating to the relief efforts and calling for others to pitch in as well. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt aren’t the only ones lending a hand, however. Fashion designers and labels are also joining the efforts to raise money for Haiti.

Lauren Merkin and Tory Burch are just two of what will undoubtedly be many fashion brands desiring to help. Lauren Merkin has announced that during the period of January 15th through the 31st, a donation of 25% of all sales will be given to the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders to support their work in the suffering country. In a sort of call for arms, Tory Burch has sent out a message to fans encouraging them to join her support of UNICEF’s response to children involved in the tragedy.

This is surely only the beginning of the fashion industry’s efforts to help. Let’s spread the word and keep the support flowing. What other designers and labels do you know of that are making an effort?
