These trends are switching straight over to the High Street, probably because they are so easy to interpret and transform into something normal and wearable. This handbag doesn’t feature any of the chiffon and ruffles that this season predicted, but is great as a muted way of bringing girlishness into your life.

The handbag itself seems to work best in the pure and innocent off-white shade rather than some of the brighter, more garish, options. This way the cut-out flower pattern is able to be the feature rather than the color, with the clever play of light and shadow that this unusual leather surface provides. I particularly like the addition of a feminine and on-trend flower accessory, which is also cut from the same mottled leather.

From the plaited handles to the frilly pattern, this Jessica Simpson handbag is beautifully girly. The color may be a little impractical both inside and out, but this is one purse that is perfect for the next season whilst remaining subtle at the same time.

I’ve always found the purses from Roberto Cavalli’s Just Cavalli collection to be a little hit and miss. Sadly the confused design of this shoulder bag sees it fall into the latter category.

Some may feel the snake print is too busy, but I don’t mind the texture it gives the polyester fabric. But such an outlandish pattern should have been the only embellishment. It’s not. We also have the ornate leather trim around the zippered pocket, which complements the loosely braided handle. By adding these Western-inspired touches, the look simply gets muddled. Is this purse runway ready, or appropriate for a rodeo?

It’s a shame, because this isn’t a bad bag. It’s the ideal size: large enough for carrying essentials and a few luxuries, but not so big that it’ll overwhelm a small frame. This functional space is lined with durable jacquard, while the pockets are reinforced with leather.

It all adds up to the kind of purse you could carry happily carry every day, if only it didn’t look like that. I can’t decide whether I should wear it with a neutral ensemble or my cowboy boots!

If you’ve had your eye on a classic Chanel handbag, it might be time to make your move. New York shop assistants say the price of the timeless bags will jump on February 1. While it’s not clear how much more we’ll be paying yet, estimates range from $50 to nearly $350.

It might seem hard to justify such a price increase in the midst of a global recession, but Chanel can get away with because demand hasn’t waned. These designer bags have waiting lists ranging from 30 people to a few hundred. While bagistas willingly wait to get their mitts on a Chanel purse, I suppose the label can charge whatever it likes!

But take heart Chanel lovers. If your favorite quilted handbag now seems even more out of reach, there’s always eBay. While some in-demand styles are auctioned off at prices higher than retail, there are still some bargains to be had.

This multi-colored snake version is the most outlandish in the range, but it’s also the most authentic looking. By keeping the colors earthy, I don’t think it appears too outrageous, but some conservative fashionistas may disagree. The Nessie is also available in caramel, stone, and pinkberry, all with the same subtle snake-embossed sheen. While no one will confuse these with authentic snake, they do make the most of the Nessie’s pleated details. These tend to get lost in the patterned bag, but become a real feature on the plainer varieties.

Satiny green fabric lines the sizable interior. A large zippered pocket and two open slips help keep this roomy expanse organized, while two more secure pockets up front take care of the goodies you want on hand.

Edgy silver hardware helps to dress up the dual shoulder straps, which are just a little longer than the average for everyday carrying. It’s a good thing too, because the Nessie is the kind of bag that could easily become a favorite fashion accessory!

Louis Vuitton’s Core Values campaigns always make a lovely change from the slick and superficial ads that usually litter the fashion magazines. The latest commercial stars one of the world’s most revered photographers, Annie Leibovitz, and her friend, the legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. Set in Annie’s New York City apartment, the subtly-lit advertisement captures a tender moment between the two old pals.

It’s easy to forget that this is a commercial, at least until you spy the Louis Vuitton Neverfull holdall, which is ironically full of books on dance.

This beautiful ad follows on from other successful Core Values campaigns, which have starred Sean Connery, Keith Richards, and astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell, and Sally Ride. It will appear in the February 2010 issues of magazines around the world, while a film documenting the making of the ad will be seen at the Louis Vuitton Journeys website from February 11.

Ralph Lauren steps away from the casual accessories we’re used to with the truly luxurious Ricky.

Taking its cues from the Hermes Birkin, the Ricky combines a timeless structured look with to-die-for exotics. In this case its hand-selected African crocodile, although the Ricky is also available in python, alligator, and glossy patent leather. Here silver and rhodium-palted brass hardware complement the regal purple finish.

The closure looks like a typical turnlock, but it’s a lot more secure than that. This logo-engraved Cooper lock closes shut with a key. Two keys sit on the detachable key belt, but personally I’d leave one at home in case your belt goes astray! The glove-leather lined interior is fitted with secure snap pockets, zippered pouches, and a handful of gadget slips. The brass nameplate inside is removable so you can engrave it for that personal touch.

This isn’t a bag for budding bagistas or fashion newcomers though. At a massive $16995, this Ralph Lauren purse is quite the investment piece.

Rather than overdosing on the metal, Rebecca Minkoff shows remarkable restraint by keeping the studs on the top. The silver circles, in various sizes, work together to create a striking abstract pattern. The playful bird-print inner lining is a delightful contrast to the mostly plain exterior. This roomy space is made easier to manage with a sizable zippered pocket and three open slips. That’s a little more than the average, which should please gadget-loving girls. If you’re looking for more storage room, you can make use of the large zippered pocket on the back.

The shoulder strap is incredibly long, making it suitable for over-the-shoulder toting and cross-body wear. But I can’t quite work out why it’s removable. While some bags benefit from a clutch conversion, this isn’t one of them. It’s far too large to comfortably carry by hand, so I’d guess the strap will stay put for most of us.

The Roadie is available for a relatively affordable $287.50.
