When the time comes to party, why bother being subtle? Go all out and over-the-top with this Sequins & Satin clutch from Jessica McClintock.

I am not entirely sure about the pattern on this sequined evening bag. Whilst undeniably glitzy, the strange camouflage effect looks more random than designed. It does make for a purse that dazzles under lights and strobes, but as for the level of expertise and planning involved in it, I remain unconvinced.

Personal feelings about the sequin exterior aside, the actual shape of this flap clutch is quite attractive. Curvy, yet with enough angular lines to give it some attitude and edge. The satin interior dresses the purse up even smarter, and does make it completely and utterly into a bag for evenings and parties only.

Glitzy, glam and incredibly affordable, this Jessica McClintock purse is bound to be popular.

For the most part we only see metrosexuals carrying man bags, but that might change thanks to Farm Tactics. The Los Angeles-based brand creates upcycled handbags which are happily rough around the edges.

Farm Tactics uses military textiles from the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s to handcraft its totes, satchels, hip bags, and backpacks. What could be more manly than that?

The collection includes the Tool Bag, made from duck-canvas conveyor belts and military webbing, and the Field Backpack, made from a Dutch military bag from the sixties and a 1940s gas-mask bag. I also love the sound of the Spare Parts Bag, a wallet/tool roll combo made from a 1950s American military spare parts and 1960s German hardware.

Designer Kyle Ng says his one-of-a-kind pieces “look to the past to create the future.”

Military Bags on eBay

Adidas’ collaboration with Stella McCartney resulted in plenty of cute and casual accessories for athletic fashionistas. But with the Bursa tote, the designers created a purse you’ll happily carry outside the gym.

The Bursa stays true to the line’s relaxed style with its 100% cotton body and slightly slouchy look. But the deep blue shade and silver nameplate dress things up a tad, and the bag’s better for it. It may not turn a lot of heads, but it wouldn’t look out of place while brunching at a café or hitting the mall.

If you do plan on hitting the sales, at least you know there’s plenty of room for those bargain purchases. The Bursa has space to spare, although the single zippered pocket is a little disappointing. It’s hardly going to keep such a large space organized. While I appreciate the easy access the open top provides, I also wish there was some sort of clasp to keep the bag closed. At least with the platform base our goodies shouldn’t spill once we sit the tote down.

Niggling issues aside, the simple styling of the Bursa has sucked me in. And at just $75, I’m willing to forgive those gripes.

Dannii Minogue is the latest celebrity to become a fashion designer. The Australian pop star and X Factor judge has just launched a range of dresses, and sources suggest some designer handbags may be in the works.

The purses would make sense, as Dannii has worked with her close friend, handbag designer Tabitha Somerset Webb, on her fashion collection.

“I’m so excited. Having the best day. Today I’m selling my new collection of dresses – pinching myself that the dream has come true!” Dannii told fans on her Twitter page.

But it seems this might not be Dannii’s only move into fashion. Grazia magazine says Dannii may be stepping behind the cameras as the new face of British retailer Marks & Spencer. If this rumor is true, the Aussie star will follow in the footsteps of Mylene Klass and Twiggy.

With the star expecting her first child in July, I wonder whether that modeling rumor could possibly be true. After all, if she’s busy designing and modeling, when will she have time to pop out the baby and take on those motherly duties?

Taking its cues from Valentino comes this budget alternative from Spiegel.

Its black leatherette finish may not convince anyone that you’re carrying a high-end designer purse, but that’s hardly the point. Rather than a mere luxury impersonator, this Spiegel bag simply offers the on-trend large rosette look for less. Rather than a four-figure sum, you can get this Ruffled Rosette bag for just $44.

Of course, Spiegel had to cut a few corners to keep the price down. It doesn’t skimp on space, but it does let us down on features. Such a sizable bag needs much more than a simple slip pocket to stay organized. At least a zippered pocket would have seen small valuables staying put, but I’m pretty sure items will fall out of this open compartment.

That oversized corsage may be a little too ostentatious for some, but I think in basic black Spiegel makes it work. Just pair it with something simple to avoid your outfit looking too busy.

Handbags aren’t the only things that can get incredibly expensive sometimes; now smart wallet/clutches are heading in the same direction. This Cartier purse will set you back $680; but is it worth it?

As someone who has very tight purse strings, my first instinct is to say that no bag, ever, is worth it. But because I know I am a cynic and a fool, I shall rebel against my instinct and look at the best bits. The first unique selling point is the highly unusual red/gold color, like burnt umber and a sunset rolled into one. The saturation is improved by the high quality glossy patent finish, whilst the smart and clearly quality Cartier embossing make it stand out from the crowd.

Prettiness aside, however, this purse is still very expensive. It may well fit inside another handbag if needed or exist as a clutch in its own right, but this unusual wallet isn’t life changing. After all, it has a normal, if useful, amount of organization, and a predictable rectangular shape.

So there we have it. Could you buy a much cheaper wallet that is just as pretty? Yes, very easily; just browse our wallet section for ideas. It is, however, beautiful, and if you have fallen in love then you may find it hard to resist.

The Suede “Swirl” Kisslock Clutch by Sondra Roberts is a little bit vintage, a little bit modern, and a whole lot of style.

The suede body is dressed up with the stitched swirls that give the purse its name. In such a dense fabric, these stitches give the clutch a lovely and unexpected quilted texture that’s so much more engaging than any traditional diamond finish. The combination of modern waves and a gleaming vintage clasp could create a confused look, but Sondra Roberts manages to pull it off.

While the styling would suit a casual day out, it’s so small that you’ll probably only want to carry it after five. You can maximize the space though by planning ahead and leaving the chain strap at home if you know you won’t use it. There’s no sense cluttering up your purse with a strap, is there?

As with so many suede purses, I’m not sure how long this will retain its good looks. But for $75 retail (and even less now that’s it on sale!), I’m willing to take a gamble.

Is there anything that Taylor Momsen cannot do? She stars as Jenny Humphrey in teen drama sensation Gossip Girl, she’s the lead singer of post-grunge rock outfit The Pretty Reckless, and now she’s the face of British fashion label New Look.

I must admit, I’ve never heard of UK brand New Look before, but with Taylor Momsen fronting its campaign I expect all that to change quickly. Taylor’s platinum blonde tresses and devil-may-care attitude seem the perfect match for the label’s rebellious teen market and streetwise fashions.

The brand has a reputation for choosing the coolest up and comers for their advertising campaigns. Pixie Geldof and Alexa Chung have both been New Look models, and Taylor seems to be cut from that same edgy cool cloth.

I wish the ads were more engaging, and the fashions just a little more inspiring, but I can’t fault Taylor’s work here. If you’re more impressed by her studded handbag than I, you can buy it online at New Look.

Sharif takes some of the handbag world’s most popular trends and combines them to create this woven tote with fringe. But the jury’s still out on whether the mix is genius, or simply confused.

Honestly, I’m still trying to make up my mind whether I like this bag or not. It’s eye-catching to be sure. I admire a designer that takes some fashion risks, and this is definitely a gamble. The combination of orange and white is lovely, fun and not at all clichéd. But the fact remains, there’s still a lot going on here.

I might have completely jumped on this bag if Sharif had used just one of the elements. The woven body is stunning, with its interplay of colors and shapes. The diamond plaid design is so much more interesting than most woven finishes we see. The same colors are used for the fringe, which hangs freely from the base of the bag. It’s a little bit boho, but the studs near it ensures it never appears too floaty. And then there’s the flap closure, with its slouchy belt and golden buckle. As I said, there’s an awful lot going on.

The same can be said of the inside, although this is unlikely to polarize fashion fans to the same degree. Instead, all the features here are added to make your life easier. There’s the usual zippered pocket, an open pouch, and a couple of bellowed pockets beside. But this is about more than simply adding compartments. There’s also a dog-leash clasp for added security, and a fob to take care of your keys.

If you hate this Sharif purse, the bottom line won’t do anything to change your mind. But it’s refreshing to see such a practical purse priced under the magic $100 mark.
