Mmm, what a gorgeous and unusual color! Despite the deceptively simple shape, it would seem that this Gin Lane hold-all from Jessica Simpson is anything but ordinary.

So, let us start with the color. This rich patent tone is a meeting of lime and olive, creating a sumptuous and earthy shade that is bright at the same time as being quite subtle. Whilst a red or yellow bag never fails to attract attention, this shade is muted enough to let you get away with it at work or for a casual day out. The other colors in the range share the same sheen, but in my opinion this version achieves the best balance between color and class.

The shape is great too, although as always you will have the problem of making it slouch in just the right way. If you achieve that, however, then it manages to avoid looking scruffy due to the cute coordinated zip accessory and the luxury finish. To have it look so simple and so smart for only $87.90 isn’t to be scoffed at, although you don’t get real leather for that price.

With lot of pockets and plenty going for it, I have been convinced by this kiwi handbag. And how nice that for once an elegant bag comes in at under $100!

This Pura Lopez clutch manages to combine a glamorous shape with a hessian fabric, creating something that looks at once elegant, and rustic!

Designing something beautiful using hessian is an area that hasn’t much been explored. I think this thick and textured fabric is still too deeply associated with poorness, and poor fabrics don’t work well for posh bags as they make the wrong impression! I think this is a mistake, however, and clearly Pura Lopez agrees with me as this clutch costs $310.

When we aren’t worrying about the fabric choice, we can realize that it works really well. The mottled gray shades make for a sophisticated yet unusual purse, which is exactly what you would want from something so expensive. You would want a purse that stands out from the crowd! The ruffled slouchy shape of this also works brilliantly for this season’s trends, and I could see it combining happily with soft peach or nude shades.

With bags of texture and plenty of attitude, this smart little clutch is only missing a shoulder strap!

The appearance is unmistakably Eenamaria, with its bold colors and strong lines. That’s one for a cell phone, and another for the business cards you need when making connections.

It’s not luxurious enough to suit the glamorous soirees that any Uptown Girl is sure to intend, but this colorful clutch is ideal for catching up with friends or surviving the urban jungle.

The Reflection from Donald J Pliner takes the hobo out of the hippie era and into the 21st century.

With only a hint of slouch, this is a much more structured looking bag than most hobos. While that may disappoint hobo purists, I think it makes it a more versatile choice. Most hobos really only suit streetwear and long music festivals, but this wouldn’t look out of place when carried to the office or a dinner date. The patent leather finish, in conservative beige or black, only adds class to this sophisticated purse.

I also appreciate the minimalist design. The embossed logo on the front pocket is a discreet homage to the designer. The shape is simplistic too. The shoulder strap is the star for me. The link and band design is so unusual, but practicality hasn’t been forgotten. It’s more than an aesthetic element with its generous 7.5 inch drop.

The playfully printed lining, with its peace signs and boots, is in delicious contrast to the reserved exterior. While Donald J Pliner has fun here, the label remembers the things we need. Zip and slip pockets are on hand to make organization a breeze.

For $225, the Reflection hobo makes a great option for girls still searching for a reliable go-to purse.

Donna Sharp has never struck me as a very subtle brand, but this Savvy Handbag might just make me change my mind. Gone are the colorful prints and feminine accents, replaced by this much subtler design.

From a distance, this looks like any black handbag. The shape’s a little more interesting than your standard boxy tote, but it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. But look closer at this Savvy bag and you’ll see what made me take a second look.

This handbag is made from lush velvet embossed with a delicate paisley print. The effect is gorgeous, and yes, subtle. I never would have expected to use such a word to describe a Donna Sharp bag, but there you have it.

After seeing the deceptively simple exterior, this cleverly organized interior caught me off guard in the very best way. Donna Sharp goes beyond the standard lining and side pockets formula by offering something much more functional. The medium-sized space is divided into three sections by a large zippered pouch. There’s another smaller zip pocket in one side, and there are two slotted pouches and a pen slot in the other.

I love the restraint Donna Sharp has shown here, but the designer hasn’t forgotten about her loyal fans. The Savvy is also available in a range of colorful prints and patterns typical of the brand.

Is it just me, or has nautical style been in fashion for seasons upon seasons now? It keeps falling out of the limelight and then climbing straight back in.

Well, one of the best ways to get in on this indomitable trend is to buy a classy handbag that lets you channel the sailor-chic vibe without looking silly or tacky. I think that this M. Andonia structured tote is one of the most sophisticated options on the current handbag market.

Although I am not completely convinced by the rope weaving its way across this tote, the rest looks great. The matte striped fabric is nautical without going over-the-top, whilst the red patent anchors work in great and shiny contrast. This in combination with the red trim and clasp makes a great looking tote!

The Anchors Away tote does cost a lot, at $369, but the defined shape and classy design (and the rather wonderful red lining) make this a worthy option.

Tommy Hilfiger isn’t known for being particularly fashionable but this Trail clutch is really quite stylish.

The design of this leather clutch is simple, but effective. The shape follows an elegant and familiar structure, whilst the cute turquoise clasp breaks up the long expanse of white. Immediately I feel this makes the purse minimalist and very pretty, avoiding the boring style that white bags often end up falling prey to.

This casual purse may be pretty, but its tennis style design keeps it ultimately casual. Whilst the contrasting stitching and designer pebbled leather are undeniably smart, this is more suited to a summer wedding or smart day-wear rather than nights on the town. Especially when you look inside; this clutch has lots of room and a lovely casual red striped fabric!

The Trail clutch is good looking, cleanly designed and not priced too high.

While most of the Coloriffics collection is conservative and classic, this satin handbag with rosettes is right on trend.

I’ve seen so many bags featuring rosettes lately, but what sets this one apart is the price. At $50 retail, it’s a lot more affordable than many similar handbags you’ll find. That makes it a great way to enjoy the current trend without spending a little cash. We don’t know how long this look will be popular after all!

Satin is an ideal fabric for these rosettes. It’s flowing and frothy, and makes perfect petals. Butthis purse isn’t perfect. I can see the hard box purse peeking out underneath the petals, when a more high-end label would have covered this up. It’s a minor gripe, but this hard metal doesn’t seem to fit with those feminine flowers.

We see more metal in the kisslock clasp and handles, and again I’m not sure whether it works. I always love the vintage charm such a clasp brings, but this one is far too chunky. It undermines the handbag’s feminine charm; a more delicate clasp would have been far more appropriate. The snake chain handle is also a curious choice. Again, it just doesn’t seem to fit.

I may be picky because I’ve seen so many brands release similar bags, and these labels didn’t make such mistakes. However these flaws are minor, and easy to live with if you’re on a budget.
