Sixteen celebrities have donated their handbags to raise money for a cancer support group in Seattle. Purses owned and autographed by the stars will be sold in Gilda’s Club of Seattle’s annual Bags & Bottles auction next month.

The altruistic celebs involved include Carol Burnett, Olivia Newton John, Tina Fey, Sharon Osbourne, and Scarlett Johansson. One of the most unique bags to be sold will come from glass artist Dale Chihuly, who has decorated a purse especially for the event.

Gilda’s Club of Seattle is a meeting place where people living with cancer and their families and friends can come together for emotional support and social interaction. Its Bags & Bottles event will also feature shopping opportunities from Seattle’s most popular bag stores, a silent auction, and wine tasting. Guests are encouraged to bring a new or barely used handbag to donate to the silent auction.

Bags & Bottles will be held from 4 to 7 pm on March 14 at Seattle’s Westin Hotel. Tickets are available for $40 from the Gilda’s Glub of Seattle website.

In a world of fashion houses that follow rules, it’s so exciting to see a brand like Bodhi who breaks them all. In the Temple Bag, it’s created an accessory like nothing I’ve seen before.

It calls to mind Christian Louboutin’s Cocotte hobo with its accordion style, but that structure is much more pronounced here. The name suggests it was modeled on grand Asian temples, but the styling is so abstract that most people won’t get the reference. That’s OK though; I think that makes it look like a work of art rather than a novelty.

Once you’re done admiring the style you’ll probably wonder how practical it is. Bodhi’s done a surprisingly good job here. The flat framed base will keep the bag upright once you set it down, and the leather strap is long enough for easy carrying. The interior is lined with gray logo embossed fabric, and secured with a zip. You’ll probably need to be careful when packing to retain that distinctive accordion look, but with a little practice that shouldn’t be too hard.

The pale yellow color may not seem exciting enough to accompany such an outrageous bag, but I think it works well. This subtle sun shade gives the Temple bag a versatility that a louder color may not have afforded.

Wristlets are often quite similar to wallets, and the best examples on the market are the ones that are happy to try and do both.

The Jessica Simpson Taylor wristlet is a case in point. On one hand the central compartment and little wrist strap make a useful miniature handbag, but on the other hand the multiple pockets and compartments make this perfect to act as a cash carrier and wallet. To find a purse so happy to adapt to both requirements is quite unusual, and I salute Jessica Simpson for designing it.

Despite the great structure the actual purse is a little lightweight and tacky. The snakeskin print isn’t particularly oversized, but in combination with the shiny patent pink many people will dislike it. The silver hardware is also going to be a bit of a tipping point for people’s personal tastes, although I actually quite like the snakeskin in combo with it; it is so much nicer than gold!

Vintage luggage lovers should get themselves to The Pullman Gallery in London. The British antiques dealer is selling a stunning Louis Vuitton Damier cabin trunk from 1890.

The trunk is one of the earliest examples of Louis Vuitton luggage, as it was created less than 40 years after the Parisian company was founded. It hearkens back to the days when travel was for the upper echelons of society, and the well-heeled tourists always had an entourage on hand to carry their suitcases.

The trunk features the rare Damier checkerboard pattern, antique brass handles and hardware, and wood and leather trim. It definitely doesn’t look its age, after being lovingly restored to its former glory.

Priced at $11, 000, this is an item for serious collectors only. But as it’s likely to be the only one of its kind in the world, that doesn’t seem like a bad price to me.

In modern fashion chain straps on clutches are almost obligatory. Many may be disappointed that Bebe doesn’t include one, but at least this purse is small enough to make hand-held carrying easy.

The black/silver version is a classic evening look, but I prefer this unexpected shade called meteor. It’s like a pale gold with rose tones, which help to soften the metallic and make it look much more elegant. If you’re undecided, don’t worry. At a mere $19, you can afford to get both!

Badgley Mischka puts functionality first with the Delia Flat Cross Body bag.

The styling is simple, but sophisticated. That’s refreshing to see in a cross-body bag. While most are very casual, this one wouldn’t look out of place in the boardroom. The interior is just as practical as the outside looks. It’s a very deep space, but so long as you put your keys in the zip pocket and your cell phone in one of the slip pouches this shouldn’t be a concern. There’s plenty of room inside for both essentials and luxuries, and the zipper will make sure that whatever you’re carrying stays safe.

The short handles are complemented by a detachable shoulder strap. I doubt you’ll unclip it though, as this hands-free carrying option is much more practical for a day running errands or hitting the mall.

I do like a fun bag, and you can always get away with it more when the handbag is quite casual like this Steve Madden satchel.

This is smart on the one hand with its glossy yet sophisticated sheen, whilst the thick weave makes it lighthearted and fashion-focused.

We can always trust bank balance-friendly Steve Madden to produce something that looks good without using all our cash. This particular example comes in at $108, and whilst we sacrifice the luxury of real leather we do get a satchel that looks gorgeous! I also worry about the slightly short handles, but the ever practical designer has given us a long shoulder strap as if he knew I would complain!

If you want some all-out glamour, then you can’t get more sparkly than this incredibly expensive D&G clutch.

The Licia is what luxury is all about. You have to shell out an astounding $945, but with a high-fashion designer piece we all know that in many ways that is what it is all about. If it was cheap then people would, believe it or not, be less likely to buy it. The eternal question, of course, is whether this is actually worth the moolah?

I think that you do get what you pay for in the delicate and masterful scattering of crystals, gems and other such glittery wonderfulness (and yes, that is a technical term). The silk satin is also highly luxurious, and makes this Dolce & Gabbana clutch feel as posh as it looks. The one area where I do question its design and therefore its worth, however, is the shape. From the front it is OK,  but this seems a little oversized and slouchy for something that will be used for really high-brow events.

Classy and smart, this is a D&G fan’s dream come true!

While I’ve been pleasantly impressed by Abas’ tiny clutches, this plush Ella purse makes me drool.

I’ve seen Abas use these same elements before, from the opulent Italian leather to the realistic python embossing. But on this larger scale, and with the addition of modern cut-out handles, the label ups the sex appeal.

After swooning over the midnight blue finish, the beige suede lining looks even drabber. But at least it feels lovely while we’re scrounging around for keys and lipstick. You won’t be searching for too long though, with one zippered pocket and three slips designed to handle your small essentials. Double magnetic closures strike the balance between easy access and security.

I hear that the shiny silver frame and handle trims make this purse a little heavy, but I’d be willing to suffer to have it dangling from my fingertips. At $350 retail it is on the expensive side, but here’s a tip. Right now you can get it for half that on Amazon.
