Bebe give a glitzy take on the popular woven tote with the Charlie. While brands like Bottega Veneta and Elliott Lucca give woven leather a classic look, Bebe prefers something more outrageous.

The brand combines skinny strips of metallic polyeurethane to create this headturning design. The surface could easily look busy, but by using complementary tones Bebe creates a purse that is dazzling without being garish. The thick braided handles match the thin piping along the top of the bag to create a unified look. I could have done without the long tassles, a countrified accent which seems at odd with the overall design, but they’re sparse enough to ignore. The juvenile butterfly key fob is another anomaly, but at least it’s easy to remove.

This tote is enormous, but its slender profile makes sure it still looks chic. You could probably squeeze in a few chunky items, but this tote looks at its best when carefully packed to maintain its clean lines. The durable jacquard lined space has open pockets for gadgets and a zippered pocket for coins and other small valuables.

At $169 this tote doesn’t have the quality of its woven leather alternatives, but it is a fun way to spice up a casual outfit.

How heavy is your purse? Recent studies show that the average handbag weighs 23 pounds. To put that in real life terms, it’s the equivalent of carrying around a 15-month-old child!

So what is weighing our handbags down? The most popular item is a cell phone, with 85% of women and 43% of men carrying a mobile in their bag. Other commonly found items include “keys, pens, tissues, headache tablets, chewing gum, MP3 players, lip balm, a mirror and deodorant.” It’s little wonder that our handbags are so heavy!

Here are some interesting tidbits from the survey though. It seems women aren’t the only ones overstuffing their bags. Men are actually twice as likely as girls to carry spare underwear and pet dogs in their bags! One in 20 men carry a pooch in their purse, compared to one in every 100 women.

So most of us aren’t carrying dogs, but our handbags still weigh as much as a small child? It seems to me that we need to reevaluate what we mean by handbag essentials, or at least invest in more lightweight bags!

With styling that’s contemporary, yet classic, the Arlette from Badgley Mischka makes a great everyday tote.

A gathered belt cinches in the body, adding pleats and further emphasizing the tote’s slouchy shape. That gives the Arlette a casual look, although the dark colors help it work on evenings out as well. I prefer the punch of this red tote, although those searching for something more conservative will enjoy the Arlette in black.

The Arlette is a sizable bag, with plenty of space to handle essentials and a few luxuries besides. The interior is sensibly appointed with all the organizational features you’d expect. A handful of slip pouches and a zippered pocket in the walls will help take care of some of the clutter. This fabric lined space closes easily with a magnetic snap.

At $375, the Arlette is no impulse buy, but its classic looks and high-quality design make it great value. If you tire of bags quickly, I suggest looking elsewhere. But if you prefer to invest in a bag which will last for several seasons to come, the Arlette is a great candidate.

I’ve never been a big fan of the standard Burberry line. I know it’s classic and everything, but all that tan and red plaid just irks me to no end. The Burberry Prorsum line, on the other hand, is young and fun, and still classic in its own way.

The Maggie Shoulder Bag is a little more pared down than what I’ve come to expect from Burberry Prorsum, but I’m ready to go with it. The ever-so-slightly off-white color of the leather with the intricate gathering is butter soft and irresistible. The elegant shape of the bag combined with its uptown brand of edginess makes it the kind of handbag that could work with a lot of different looks. It could go office elegant or avant garde with the change of a blazer.

The flat leather shoulder strap is the perfect length and design. It’s not going to fall off your shoulder or dig into it. And the size of the bag makes it really practical for everyday use. I’m not sure how practical white is for regular toting, but that’s really a matter of preference and lifestyle.

Overall, I think this is a fabulous new offering from Burberry Prorsum, and it makes me look forward to seeing more from this label.

If you have a kid who eats packed lunches, then this fun yet functional tote may be just the thing for them.

I don’t see why children’s bags always have to be glittery, or kind of horrible. Surely there must be a way to make something attractive at the same time as being durable. I am not talking designer babies, but just something that is actually nice. This cartoon tote manages to achieve those goals, combining waterproof vinyl with a cute and colorful tortoise print that will be loved by children and adults alike.

As you can see from the photo, this is designed to carry to school all the stuff your kids may need. It can hold their lunches, their books, and even their show and tell. Having lots of room makes this stripy handbag all the more useful, although I feel the lack of a clasp may lead to some stuff getting lost whilst they play!

I could talk about the cheap materials and the over-the-top brightness, but actually these are advantages rather than letdowns. You don’t really want to have to spend more than the $12.99 on a kiddies bag, and you also don’t want it to be made out of a luxury fabric! All you want is something useful, affordable, and fun!

Cross-body bags tend to be casual accessories, the kind of things you sling over your shoulder when you’ve got a busy day ahead. They rarely look as beautiful as the Becca from Abas.

Its looks are luxurious, but this purse isn’t quite as opulent as it first appears. The Becca seems to be made of exotic python, but it’s actually crafted from Italian leather. Now this cowhide is nothing to be sneezed at, but it’s not as prized as snakeskin. This works in the Becca’s favor, making it durable and relatively affordable.

The simply shaped pouch features an external zipper pocket, and that’s just the start of it. There are more pockets inside the ribbed nylon-lined interior.

What I like most about the Becca is that it doesn’t forget what cross-body bags are supposed to be about. While it looks like a glamourpuss, this handbag is convenient and practical. What a combination!

London-based luxury label Dunhill is expanding into the world of men’s luggage this season. Forget metrosexual murses; the heirloom travel bags from the spring/summer 2010 collection ooze masculinity.

The Bladon Leather collection is crafted from vegetable tanned leather with a sophisticated natural grain. The treated cowhide gives each piece its own personality now, but its marks and shades will only ripen with age as the skin takes on a rich patina. There are four styles to choose from, each crafted with elegance and practicality in mind. They are accented with brushed nickel hardware and lined in durable cotton twill.

The collection’s moniker is a nod to the brand’s rich heritage. It is named after the English town where loyal Dunhill customer Sir Winston Churchill was buried.

No prices are confirmed yet, but I’m pretty confident that these bags won’t go cheaply. They will be available at Dunhill boutiques and selected retailers around the world.

With spring just around the corner, flower printed purses are right on trend. M. Andonia gives florals a retro twist with the Beverly Kiss Shoulder Bag.

The psychedelic styled flowers are sketched on an eggshell blue background. The black, white, and lemon hand-drawn look is a far cry from the vibrant blooms we often see, and I think this point of difference works in this M. Andonia bag’s favor. However I probably could have done without the Swarovski crystals which dot the petals. They don’t really add anything to the design, but at least they’re sparse enough to ignore.

The kiss-lock closure seems a little confused here; a vintage touch which doesn’t really gel with the 60s-inspired flowers. But at least this clasps makes the Beverly Kiss bag secure. The hot pink lined interior is a much better match for the patterned exterior. It’s a simple space, but this playful fabric makes it much more appealing.

At $289 this shoulder bag does seem a little costly. For that price I’d expect to see genuine leather used for more than just the trim. But if you’ve fallen for its looks, that’s not likely to matter!

Echo takes the backpack out of the schoolyard and into the disco with the glitzy Tamworth bag.

OK, it may look a little out of place on the dance floor, but the metallic crinkle fabric is definitely eye-catching! Honestly, this slouchy fabric is too loud for me no matter what the shade. But with three different options to choose from, plenty of girls will find one that works for them.

While the colors are questionable, the design is a lot more appealing. I really like the zipper which runs through the wide shoulder strap. It means the Tamworth can work as a sling bag when you’re on the go, or easily convert to a traditional backpack when you’re carrying a heavy load.

But be warned, this Echo bag is a bit of a lightweight. Its small stature makes it more appropriate for quick trips into town than lugging textbooks to class. At least there are zippered pockets on the side when you need a little extra storage space.

The Tamworth may not be the best backpack I’ve seen, but at $98 at least it won’t break the bank.
