Maison Martin Margiela has a cult following like almost no other line. The designer’s style is simultaneously cutting edge and totally classic. This bag is completely in keeping with itsistic aesthetic and I predict that it will be a major seller.

Truthfully, this is exactly the kind of bag that I love. Every detail is impeccable, the quality is extraordinary, it’s totally practical and will work with almost any outfit. The beauty of a bag like this lies in its subtlety. There’s absolutely no frills or frippery to distract from its minimalistic charm.

The simple rectangular shape is enhanced by the slim shoulder straps and onset stitching. I love the convertibility of this bag. Unlike so many hybrid bags, this one will actually go from hand-held to shoulder strap with no effort. And although the longer shoulder strap is removable, its look is so consistent with the rest of the bag that I don’t think it’s necessary.

The fabric is sturdy, neutral, and will stand up to years of use and abuse. Not to mention that it will be easy to keep clean. This is basically a rucksack for high fashion types. Unfortunately, it comes with a high fashion price tag. At $745, this really isn’t going to make it as an everyday for your everyday girl, but for those with the funds, it will be well worth it.

Diane von Fursternberg is getting ready for summer with a brand new range of beach totes.

Her latest collection features nine colorfully themed totes, including a tropical garden, leopard print, Warhol-inspired daisy, and an explosion. At just $75 you won’t expect them to be too luxurious, but no one wants to expose a high-end purse to salty sea air do they? The coated canvas has a sexy sheen, and any spills or residue simply wipe away with a damp cloth.

The open top design isn’t the most secure, although it does offer easy access to our beach towel. If you’re looking for secure storage there is a zippered pocket hidden inside. It’s so large you could easily use it to keep your bathing suit away from sandy shoes, or your damp swimsuit away from the novel you’re reading.

I am only a fan of leopard print in certain situations, but I think this luxury wallet from Lovcat is one of the few to make it work.

Rather than looking gaudy or tacky, the oversized and arty print on this particular clutch actually looks quite classy. Perhaps the cute brown leather bow helps to cement this impression, as it instantly makes the wallet look vintagey and consequently elegant rather than trashy.

Having sold myself on the print, I can’t really complain about any of the other features of this animal print bag. And, to be fair, I wouldn’t really want to. The leather is beautifully shiny, the gold panel sophisticated. Really this is a looker! The print on the inside coin section perhaps confuses the safari theme a little, but overall I think Lovcat is onto a winner.

With a plethora of pockets combining functional with fun, this Lovcat purse would be a great addition to any girl’s handbag. The only downside is that you have to shell out $145 to get your hands on one!

Well, well, well, Calvin Klein keeps on producing accessories that are as much about the unusual design as they are about the CK brand.

The Falling Water tote isn’t the first fluffy named purse to come out of this fashion house in recent months, but I am going to put myself out on a limb and say that this is  one of the most innovative designs that I have seen in a long time. The exterior is, you see, is a strange and clever combination of pleating and quilting, which results in this slightly puffy synthetic leather striping. It feels great to hold, even though the synthetic leather is a poor substitute for what we would normally expect from a top designer.

That striping, whilst not totally clean and perfect, does work well with the predictable tote shape. You can fit lots in, including books and folders, instantly making it acceptable for work or college. You also get a couple of exterior and interior pockets to add to the practicality, even if hiding the outside zips didn’t quite work. The only non-practical thing is the thin chain and fabric shoulder strap, which looks like it would break if you filled the bag too much!

This Calvin Klein tote does have a few flaws, but the design and style is great and very contemporary.

Sharon Osbourne isn’t the only British star taking a stand against the use of fur in fashion. Twiggy has joined the chorus, slamming designers using real fur in London Fashion Week.

The America’s Next Top Model judge is also the face of PETA’s latest ad campaign, which features the provocative slogan “If You Wouldn’t Wear Your Dog, Please Don’t Wear Any Fur.”

“I am very sad that some designers are still using real fur when the fake alternatives are so effective and so easily obtainable,” she recently said. “These poor animals are kept in such terrible and inhumane conditions. Is it really worth this cruelty just for fashion’s sake? I don’t think so.”

I must say that I agree with her. I’m an easily taken in by a furry bag as the next person, but I probably couldn’t tell the difference between an authentic pelt and a very convincing fake. When the alternatives are so good, why indulge in fur?

Love them or hate them; purses from Mary Frances are never boring!

Just as we’ve come to expect from this designer, the Firefly clutch is sure to polarize opinion. But that’s the only predictable thing about this colorful mess of chiffon! The soft rainbow tones work with leaf and flower accents to create a springtime garden. It’s worth looking closer at these embellishments because they are so skillfully done. Both front and back are covered in suede leaves and velvety ribbon roses. Beads and freshwater pearls are dotted between them, creating a look that’s lush and full. Even the kiss-lock closure, with its faceted stones, seems to mimic tiny gum nuts. It may be overly embellished for some, but I can’t help admiring Mary Frances’ dedication to her vision!

This clutch is larger than many on the market, but as it’s made from lightweight chiffon it should be easy to handle. If you’d prefer to go hands free though, simply attach the shoulder strap. This beaded chain might not be comfortable, but it’s just as fun and flamboyant as we’d expect from Mary Frances.

At $200, this isn’t a cheap after-five accessory, but it is one that will stand out from the crowd.

We already know that Botkier likes its tasseled handbags so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the brand has produced another one to be added to the portfolio.

The Howard Street clutch is a funky combination of cowboy tassels, rock-chick zips, and a cool shape. Botkier is clearly aiming to create something edgy but fashionable, and I think it has achieved it. I am not totally sold on the long leather strings, which remind me a little of a squid (!), but the incredible qualitys of the materials more than makes up for it.

Those unusual feature pockets are not just there to look good; they also offer lots of storage space for girls who need some organizational aid. Then on top of that you have a spacious interior, and a cross-body strap to keep the whole thing stylish and secure.

This is an expensive purse at $375, but if you want luxury leather and good looks then this Botkier bag is bound to suit.

Nautical-themed bags are right on trend as we all look forward to the warmer weather ahead. Two’s Company embraces the fashion with this Nautikos Tote.

Rather than subtle nautical accents, the Nautikos is upfront with its blue and white color scheme and bold sailboat print. While I often prefer something less obvious than this, the pattern really works here. And considering the budget price, it’s an unexpected joy to see the boats emblazoning both front and back. I love the way the pale print is further accented with white leather handles.

The boat print is what really makes this Two’s Company. That aside this is a fairly basic tote, simple but classic. It’s not the kind of tote that could double as an after-five accessory, or even work if you’re lounging on an expensive yacht on the Caribbean. But if you’re sailing on your average rig, or lazing by the lake, this will do the job nicely.
