It might take its inspiration from the Victorian era, but the Alex Corset Hobo from Linea Pelle is all modern.

The name comes from the large criss-cross stitches which accent the top corners and base. They resemble the lacing used to tighten an old-fashioned corset, but unless you knew the name you probably wouldn’t make the connection. That’s a good thing, as it saves the Alex from being just another novelty purse sold on a gimmick.

While these accents are lovely, most fans will be drawn to the luxury Italian leather. Its softness is only emphasized by the bag’s typical hobo slouch. I’m not too fond of the skinny tassels which seem to adorn so many of Linea Pelle’s recent releases, but they aren’t a deal breaker for me.

The conservative leather hues are paired with a wild zebra print lined interior. This is where I want to see a bag break loose. Tucked away inside, the lining is almost like a secret for the owner to enjoy alone. I also approve of the luxuriously large space, but that’s where my praise ends. A single zippered pocket simply isn’t enough to keep such a big space organized, and Linea Pelle should have known better.

It might be a pain to use, but there’s no denying that the Alex Corset Hobo has a certain charm. And at $495, it won’t completely break the bank.

After unceremoniously receiving the boot from Ungaro, actress Lindsay Lohan is moving on to another fashion endeavor. The Mean Girls star now plans to design handbags for Ed Hardy.

“Lindsay and the design team at Ed Hardy have mutual friends, and they knew she was interested in looking for a handbag license and partner,” an anonymous source revealed. “They thought she’d be a good fit and so did she.”

Another source suggested Lindsay is currently developing three collections for the brand, and there could be more where that came from.

“Lindsay is very directly involved with the project, and she’s always pulling things online and from magazines for ideas,” the source added.

Lindsay’s fashion forays have never matched her work on the screen, so I’ll be surprised if these bags impress me. Then again, I’ve never really warmed to Ed Hardy’s flamboyant designs, so perhaps Li-Lo’s stamp will be an improvement!

Carlo Fellini has tweaked the classic satin clutch purse to create the Monica. The style is traditional to be sure, but it’s those individual touches that make all the difference.

The beautiful satiny body is tightly pleated to create dramatic waves and texture. These tiny pleats take the traditional satin body to a new place, and one that’s much more luxurious. This is offset by the frame. Ordinarily this would be another traditional feature, a vintage touch which is lovely but not very interesting. Not so here, where rows of tiny beads add more modern elegance.

The choice of shoulder chain or shorter wrist strap is another unexpected addition. I generally consider myself lucky if my clutch comes with one hands-free carrying option, so it’s a real bonus to find two. Each is detachable too, so when they’re not in use the design looks clean.

The interior is small, but that’s not altogether unexpected. It is rich though, with satin lining continuing the illusion of luxury. I say illusion, because despite its lovely countenance the Monica isn’t a snooty socialite. At just $50, she’s quite commonplace. But looking at her, you’d never know. I won’t tell if you won’t!

Here we have yet another smart purse from reasonably priced designer, Nine West.

This zip clutch isn’t overly decorated or over-the-top, which is good because anything else would have detracted from the great and unusual shape. Those curved edges are further emphasized by the zip covering the length of the flap, which of course is also part of the bag’s function itself. When unfolded this purse can hold much more, making it versatile in terms of storage.

The unusual rose color is a nice contrast to the biker chic style, and I think it is a happy meeting of femininity and tough leather attitude. The only uncertain design feature is the triple seamed accent, which I think takes away the effect of the curved lines. I am won back around by the multi-colored cord-like interior, however!

Sleek and simple, this is a pretty purse with a little attitude.

One of the things that I love about Marc Jacobs is that his lines never look trendy or overplayed, but they always seem really relevant to whatever is going on in fashion at the moment. The color, shape, and embellishment of the Kelsey have an undeniable 80s influence, but the whole package looks modern and current.

The hobo shape on this bag is way more rocker than it is boho. It has the lovely rounded off edges that I love, but the smooth leather has a thickness that helps it maintain its structure. Another interesting thing about the leather is the texture. The skin has a weathered, almost pebbled appeal, but the bright pop of color makes it look totally new.

The zippers are really what is going to attract people to this bag, though. I love their asymmetrical placement and varying sizes. They give the bag a pop punk look that is fresh and eye catching.

And at $360, the Kelsey is actually affordable to the hip, young things that are going to want it. Which makes it, in my estimation, pretty on point.

We can soon get the First Lady’s look for less, with Isabel Toledo confirmed to design a capsule collection for Payless.

The line won’t feature a suit like the pale yellow-green one Michelle Obama wore at the president’s inauguration, but it will include affordable handbags and shoes. The range will feature a fun selection of fabrics, including patent leather, rubber, and mesh, and not one piece costs more than $40!

“For me, fashion is personal and intimate, I love the unexpected, and I am truly excited to join Payless in its continuous mission to democratize fashion,” Ms Toledo said. “As a fashion designer, I focus on the consumer to create designs that are meaningful, inventive and very functional. Shoes must be flattering and wearable, and I am thrilled to collaborate with Payless to create something new and fresh for all women through my new Payless shoe line.“

The collection will be available in Payless stores across America this fall. Apparently this is just one of many collaborations in the works for the budget retailers, so I can’t wait to see who’s next!
