Angelina Jolie has impressed PETA by thoroughly investigating the practices of Akris before purchasing one of the label’s ecru horsehair handbags.

Horsehair bags are often made using hair from horses killed violently in slaughterhouses, so the Hollywood actress and humanitarian wanted to ensure she would not support this practice.

However, Akris designer Albert Kriemler assured her his label takes a much more animal-friendly approach. Its bags are made from the tails of horses, which “get haircuts just like we do.”

“Angelina has proved time and time again to be a kind of person – most recently when she insisted that the fur coat that she wore in Salt be faux,” a PETA rep told Hollywoodlife.com.

I’m sure we’d all love to support a fashion label that puts animals first, but sadly most of us don’t have Angelina’s disposable income. Her gorgeous Akris bag retails for a little less than $5000.

Just as I was beginning to think Roxy had grown up this fluffy monstrosity crosses my path and changes my mind.

It’s called the I Wish, but frankly the only thing I wish is that Roxy hadn’t created this syrupy sweet accessory. I’ve been known to enjoy faux fur bags in the past, and I’ve even embraced the current trend for oversized bows. But together the two elements are just too much.

It’s a shame really, because when you look inside this Roxy bag isn’t bad. It doesn’t wow me, but the size and features are perfectly adequate. It could use more than its single zipper pocket and the shoulder straps could stand to be a little longer, but there are no deal breakers here.

It’s just those sugary looks that repel a woman of my age. In pink it’s like something Barbie might carry. The white bag is subtler, but I hate to think how that furry finish will attract dirt.

Honestly the only girls I can see embracing the I Wish are under the age of 13. Thankfully at a mere $32, it’s not too far out of their price range.

In the past few years, Chloé has come to dominate the market in young French fashion for a particularly hip demographic. But its fashion forward yet still classic designs appeal to women the world over. In terms of delivering on the brand’s global likability, this Elsi bag is somewhat of a disappointment.

There’s a lot of interesting things going on on this bag. The fabric for one, has a remarkable texture and sparkle. The metallic woven leather is pretty fantastic. But it isn’t really interesting enough to be pared up with such a humdrum classic shape, I think. The total effect is just a little bit lacking.

The front clasp is intricate and beautiful, as is the chain strap. It looks particularly nice held onto the bag by delicate straps of leather. All of the details of this bag are fantastic actually, but the sum total of them put together is just somewhat blah for such a sparkly, glittering item.

Plus, at $1,290, I’m not really sure where the audience is going to be. The bag is too large to be the evening bag of a wealthy socialite, and too expensive to be the everyday of the hipster that might carry such an item regularly.

Sondra Roberts is one of my favourite handbag designers, because she is brave enough to create beautiful and unusual purses without feeling the need to charge the earth.

Cork isn’t perhaps one of the automatic materials you would choose to make a clutch out of. However, in the same way that cork heels can actually look smart, this is great looking, especially with the animal print black stripes! Of course, cork also makes for a box clutch that is lightweight and consequently easy to carry, unless you fill it with too many belongings!

Cork won’t stretch, and that is probably going to be one of the problems with this purse. You don’t have much flexibility, especially with the rounded corners! However, it is wider than you would expect, and it has a functional optional chain strap to make your life simpler.

In a world of over embellished evening bags, the simplicity of this Carlo Fellini purse really stands out.

Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow 1960 fashion line is going from strength to strength, so it makes sense that the mother of two plans to add handbags to her collection.

Nicole says she will add between 40 and 50 purses to her fashion line, which already includes ready-to-wear clothes, footwear, sunglasses, and jewelry. The bags will be relatively affordable by designer standards, with prices starting from $295 and ranging up to $595.

It sounds like a massive endeavor to design so many purses, so it’s not surprising to hear we won’t see them on shelves until spring 2011. But Rick Cytrynbaum, the Cofounder of Majestic Mills, the company that produces House of Harlow 1960 accessories, has already been dropping hints about what we can expect.

“If you look at the clothing and you look at the footwear, you get an idea of what the bags are going to be,” he commenting, adding that the bags will be “very, very, very Nicole.”

I guess that means the bags will have a boho feel with a few modern twists. Nicole Richie’s a modern style icon, so I have no doubt these handbags will prove as successful as the rest of her fashion range.

Emilio Pucci’s groovy bright prints epitomized fashion in the late 60s and early 70s. Luckily for us, the label stays true to Pucci’s psychedelic point of view. This fringed shoulder bag is a spot on interpretation of hippie chic for modern gals.

This bag is so boho rocker amazing that Led Zeppelin should get back together just to perform a concert to it. The bright electric blue of the suede is just the beginning, but it sure is a great one. Although part of me wishes that the hardware looked a little burnished and worn, the shiny gold creates a fabulous contrast with the soft suede, and the bolt detail on the clasp gives the whole thing a casually put together appearance.

The fringe is really what’s getting to me. It’s hard to see in the picture, but there is a full 6-8 inches of it, which means that for most of us it will come almost to the knees in a delightful curtain of boholiciousness. From the chain and suede strap to the amazing fringe, I really can’t say enough good things about this bag. The only disappointment is the $1,705 price tag. Hippie chic should come cheaper.
