Lodis has created something that manages to combine two hard-to-manage materials, bright gold and snakeskin, into a very classy purse. Having gushed about the strangely attractive looks of this Goldfinger purse, I feel that I should criticize something. Anything. I suppose I could point out that the lack of a shoulder-strap is slightly inconvenient – but it does allow you to clasp this against your beautiful black evening gown – which will set it off perfectly!

Lanvin epitomizes French chic. Its designs are both classic and cutting edge, beautifully crafted, and a little bizarre, sometimes. The Happy Snakeskin bag is the perfect example of how well all of these things can be brought together.

First of all, who doesn’t love snakeskin? No one that I know of except the occasional vegetarian. This particular snakeskin is so delicately textured that it has an almost lacy appearance, and the black and white color combination really brings out the best of the scale detail.

The classic rectangular flap-front shape is simple enough to allow the natural beauty of the snakeskin to show through. It’s also sized in such a way that it will definitely be noticed with any ensemble, but it’s certainly not ostentatious.

I don’t always love the way that Lanvin throws a chain, grosgrain, and leather strap on everything, but here it looks like magic. The softness of the grosgrain perfectly accents the texture of the snake, and the chain and leather adds a tiny bit of edgy charm.

This is a beautiful everyday bag for a woman for whom money is no object. Priced at $2,230, it’s reasonable for an exotic, but too rich for my blood.

I’m not sure how timeless this look will be, but for now I think it makes an interesting alternative to studs. Studs might be on trend, but that also makes them a bit commonplace. These accents are the ones that will make fashion fans take a second look.

It’s called a mini, but that’s a relative term. While it’s much smaller than the oversized bags many girls love, it’s large enough to carry the items most of us need. There are three open pouches for girly gadgets and a large zippered pocket in the other wall. Another secure pocket in the front is ideal for carrying the goodies you need on hand.

I’d probably hesitate to spend $595 on this purse, as its appeal likely won’t last more than a season or two. But if you’ve got the cash to spare, the Eyelet Mab Mini Satchel will make a fun addition to your wardrobe.

Halston is the latest fashion house to get the Hollywood treatment. The documentary Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston charts the rise and fall of the man considered the first American celebrity designer.

In the 1970s stars like Lauren Bacall, Liza Minelli, Bianca Jagger, Diane von Furstenberg, and of course Jackie Kennedy lined up to wear cashmere dresses and evening gowns designed by Bergdorf Goodman’s hat designer.

The Whitney Sudler-Smith directed documentary features more of the famous fashion house’s fans including Anjelica Houston, Andre Leon Talley, and Billy Joel. Diane von Furstenberg and Liza Minelli also make appearances.

This is a very different project for Whitney Sudler-Smith who also brought us the gory Torture TV and the beer-soaked comedy Bubba and Ike. Only time will tell whether the director has the chops to bring the glamour of the Halston legacy to the big screen. Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston will debut at the Tribeca film festival on April 30 ahead of its release to the general public.

Leather rarely graces minaudieres, and when it does it tends to add sneering attitude. Inge Christopher softens the bad boy fabric with flowers to create his Mika minaudiere.

The pale metallic cherry blossoms are illuminated against the dark leather. These delicate Japanese blooms make this hard-edged case a real thing of modern beauty. Forget the crystals we’re used to seeing on minaudieres; this purse might just be the new wave. That’s a good thing too, because at $150 it’s a lot more affordable than any Judith Leiber!

Of course, just because we’re not paying four figure sums doesn’t mean minaudieres have changed too much. They’re still as impractical as ever, with their hard structured shell inhibiting our storage potential. The black satin lining will muffle the sounds of your cell phone and change as you walk, but that’s as practical as this baby gets.

I suppose I could also praise Inge Christopher for adding a silver chain for carrying, but I’m not sure this one’s worthy of applause. It’s not removable, so it’ll simply clutter our already tiny bag when we opt for old-fashioned clutching. And the chain’s too short for us to comfortably go hands-free.

Still, the Mika’s looks are dazzling, and it’s not too expensive. Perhaps I can forgive those impracticalities after all!
