Oryany embodies bohemian cool with this Ella hobo.

That doesn’t mean Oryany toes the line though. The traditional crescent shape is gone, replaced with a surprisingly triangular silhouette. This shape gives the Ella more structure than a traditional hobo, but it still slouches enough to project a relaxed air.

Studs bordering the zippered pocket are arranged in a tribal pattern to give the Ella the right dose of hippie chic. The back is much plainer than the front, but the deep seams and softly mottled canvas add just enough interest.

The generous interior is lined with ribbed cotton. Such a sizable space could easily become unmanageable, but Oryany provides all the pockets we need to keep the clutter under control.

Considering its relaxed style and affordable fabrics, I’m a little surprised by the high-end price. With its $375 tag, the Ella is definitely for girls who appreciate luxury even when they’re enjoying some down time.

Whiting & Davis go all “Barbie” with this metallic pink evening bag.

Usually the masters of metal mesh are all about vintage style design, or rock chick metal and studs. However, the label has added in some color in this shirred clutch, a decision that has transformed it into something feminine and very pink indeed.

Personally I am not sure what I think of the transformation. The colored metal is lovely, and I welcome the change in direction and pace to stop this established brand from getting stuck in its ways. However, I question whether the pink metal in combination with the pearl pink wrist strap is a touch too much saccharine sweetness.

If pink and girly is your thing, however, then the appearance will no doubt be loved, especially with the added tassels and rippled gathering. Plus, these looks and very shiny metal make a great evening bag! You even get a surprising level of function for such a small purse, with plenty of room and a slip pocket.

With all the glitz and glamour of old-time Hollywood comes this Marilyn clutch from J. Tiras.

This is exactly the kind of purse I can imagine Ms Munroe carrying; the red satin body is bold yet elegant, and the tiny rhinestones covering the handle deliver a healthy dose of bling. Marilyn may have believed that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I’m sure she wouldn’t begrudge these sparklers.

This is a clutch which does little more than keep up appearances though. It’s a very long purse, but the narrow design means most of that space isn’t useable. The magnetic closure will simply pop open if you try to overstuff the structured frame design, so we’re really limited to the bare basics. The cut-out metal handle looks gorgeous, but you can just imagine how it’ll feel in your hand at the end of a night out.

Thankfully though, the Marilyn is affordably priced at $84. It may not become your favorite purse, but it will turn a few heads on a night out.

Rags2Riches is one of those special handbag labels which is both eco-friendly and socially conscious.

The purses are made from scrap cloth discarded from local garment factories, then woven together using traditional techniques. Collections are designed by Rajo Laurel and Amina Aranaz, and then handcrafted by women living in the Payatas, a socially disadvantaged community in The Philippines. The women are rewarded for their efforts via a Fair Trade profit sharing scheme. The more purses Rags2Riches sells, the greater the reward for this struggling community.

Rags2Riches innovative model has been recognized with the University of San Francisco Social Enterprise Award and The Body Shop Foundation Grant.

Rags2Riches bags are available from the Rags2Riches showroom in Quezon City and other selected retailers through The Philippines. Recycled Woven Bags on eBay

Last month Helena de Natalio’s Sofi made me swoon. Now I’m just as enamored with the label’s Sofita Shoulder Bag.

It’s no surprise really, as the two bags are very similar. They’re both made from gorgeous Argentinean leather, a skin which emphasizes the bags’ incredible slouchy profile. The leather gathers about the hardware in the same way, and with a similar unstructured shape it’s also bound to become a puddle of a purse the moment you set it down.

On the plus side, just like the Sofi the buckles at the front and sides are more than just aesthetically pleasing. They also help the Sofita convert from a shoulder bag to a satchel to a cross-body bag in an instant.

But there are a few important differences to consider if you’re feeling torn. The Sofita is a shade smaller than the Sofi, and in my opinion that’s a real positive. It’s still more than capable of carrying essentials and a few luxuries; it’ll just complement the average frame a little more than its oversized sister.

Surprisingly considering its smaller stature the Sofita is priced at $500, a few dollars more than the larger Sofi. That might put some people off, but I think the more practical stature makes it worth the splurge.

Australian designer Peter Morrissey is add handbags to his affordable fashion line for retail chain Big W. He will introduce three handbags to the range later this month.
