The folks at Spartina 449 have certainly been busy. The label has introduced five new collections to celebrate the spring/summer season.

Spartina 449 is proud to be based in beautiful Daufuskie Island in South Carolina, and takes its inspiration from the beauty of its seaside home. Each Spartina 449 bag is carefully crafted from linen and accented with high-quality leather.

The Fuskie Lane line is inspired by the area’s unspoiled sandy beaches. The Port Passage range takes us on a ferry ride to the mainland. The warm tones of the Island Kiss collection recall the area’s rich sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean. Water is the inspiration for the Freeport line, a range featuring deep blues, greens, and purples in its vibrant prints. And finally there is the Sweetgrass range, named after the sparse grasses found on Daufuskie Island’s sand dunes.

Each range features a collection of handbag shapes, from small wallets and clutches to larger day totes and drawstrings.

The brand knows it owes a lot to its local area, and so it contributes a percentage of its profits to the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation, a non-profit group that looks to preserve and protect the region’s historical and cultural heritage.

I fell hard for Mywalit’s Full-Flap Multi-Compartment purse, and I’m lusting almost as hard over the brand’s large leather coin purse.

Once again, Mywalit delivers a bag that’s more functional than it first appears. Coin purses are notoriously impractical for all but your loose change, but this one’s packed with organizational features. It’ll take care of more than coins with three credit card slots and a small outside pocket for other small items.

Those card slots won’t suit a serious shopping spree, but they’ll handle the essentials. You should be able to fit a slim cell phone inside, while the ring near the top zip takes care of your keys.

The cute domed shape is matched with an amazing range of color combinations. There are an ambitious 17 in all, many more than we get from most designers. They range from simple plain color combos to patriotic flag designs. This girly Gypsy Rose purse is my favorite, but ask me tomorrow and I might tell you something different!

Okay, I have to admit Jimmy Choo is not one of my favorite designers. His uptown Park Avenue aesthetic just isn’t my thing. This amazing clutch, however, might just be enough to make a convert out of me.

I am in love with basically every detail of this bag. The ballooned rectangular shape is perfect, and the pattern color blocking is sublime. So the combination is enough to take my breath away. And the beauty of the whole thing is that even though the current trends are represented here in terms of neon and animal print, the bag itself transcends fads.

I really don’t know how to stop gushing here. The silver logo band around the center of this bag is perfectly placed, and it balances the brightness of the neon and the edginess of the leopard spots beautifully. This is a masterfully crafted bag that has really made me look at Jimmy Choo differently.

Carry your belongings around with this funky-handled purse from sporty brand Diesel.

OK, let’s start with the obvious. The name. This Diesel handbag is called, eloquently, the Strip Club bag. I get the pun, of course, but I have to say that the name strikes me as slightly odd and even a bit tasteless! Of course, I may just be being uptight, but it had to be said!

Naming mishaps aside, however, this is quite an interesting handbag. The brand has played it cool with a quiet color scheme of silver and white, two colors that when put together become instantly modern. Indeed, the combination is quite space age, and I like the idea of this futuristic design teamed with a dark outfit with silver/white accessories. Even the shape is modern, with the wrapped circular handles. They obviously aren’t as comfy as a shoulder-strap, but you are lucky enough to get that comfy option too on this metallic tote.

With a deckchair style striped interior and lightweight canvas design, it strikes me that this purse may well be perfect for summer. It has enough room for a book to read on the beach, but is still slender. For the price of $135 I would appreciate more quality materials than polyurethane, but at least it is durable.

Fun, cool and modern, this minimalist striped purse is the perfect antidote to a hot summer’s day.

Mellow World gives retro patchwork a springtime lift with its Bliss bag.

The star of the show is the bold patchwork flower on the front of the bag. Colorful swatches of faux crocodile, alligator, python print skin make the petals, while a gleaming metal stud stands in for pollen. Glittering rhinestones create smaller blooms and buds which dot a stitched branch. The softly textured faux leather body is complemented by faux snakeskin trim. There are a lot of different textures and embellishments going on here and I’m not sure it all works, but I admire Mellow World’s willingness to take risks.

The daring front makes the almost bare back seem a bit boring, but I do appreciate the zippered pocket Mellow World’s included. It’s always nice to see a pocket here, as it gets a little extra security against your body.

This is an enormous bag, but Mellow World makes it more manageable with a large zippered envelope running down the center. This separates the interior into three user-friendly compartments. With cell and sunglasses pouches and a zippered wall pocket to boot, this large space is surprisingly easy to work with.

Its daring looks will polarize stylistas, but if you’ve fallen for them the $64.95 price tag seems a steal.

Eco-friendly handbag label GG2G has pledged a percentage of its profits to Farm Sanctuary, a charity which helps to rescue and protect animals from inhumane farming practices.

GG2G will give 3% of proceeds from its soon-to-be-released handbag line, Salvo, to Farm Sanctuary. These innovative handbags are made from vinyl discarded by the restaurant industry. In addition, GG2G will donate 15% of sales from its new organic cotton T-shirts to the charity.

“Sustainable and animal-friendly labels are providing consumers with ways to both treat themselves and be kind to the Earth and its inhabitants,” explained Farm Sanctuary’s Development Director Samantha Ragsdale. “We are excited to watch the evolving market for animal and eco-friendly products and are grateful for the support of emerging companies like GG2G.“

I’ve always admired GG2G’s eco-friendly approach to handbag production, and now that it’s supporting animal protection my respect has grown. It’s a shame the label is only donating 3% of the handbag sales, but it’s definitely better than nothing!

Considering its sexy moniker, I expected Moonsus’ Allure to be a lot more … well … alluring. But what this hobo lacks in style, it makes up for in substance.

It’s not that the Allure is ugly; it’s just very sensible. Carrying it will never commit any fashion sins, but it won’t attract a lot of attention either. It’s got more preppy structure than boho slouch, and the signature print is much more subtle than many I’ve seen. Classic colors like khaki, black, and mocha are also conservative choices. It’s inoffensive, and frankly almost enough to put any fashion fan to sleep.

But then I looked inside and was instantly woken up. This is a purse which knows what girls want, and delivers it. There are plenty of open pockets for your PDA, phone, and pens, a zippered pocket for small change and valuables, and a key-ring clip for your house and car keys. The satin lining is an unexpectedly luxurious touch, which helps to make this generous space feel even more opulent.

If you want high fashion, you’ll never want to spend the money Moonsus asks for the Allure. But if you’d prefer a practical purse which transcends the trends, the $158 price tag doesn’t seem like such a bad deal.

Say it isn’t so! The rumor mill is buzzing with talk that designer Stefano Pilati may soon be pushed out of Yves Saint Laurent. His no show at the recently Metropolitan Opera Gala, YSL’s biggest event of the year in the US, has done little to quell the gossip.

Word from Paris Fashion Week is that while Pilati’s gorgeous shoes and handbags are selling well, the reception hasn’t been so positive for his ready-to-wear line. The powers that be at YSL aren’t happy, and it seems they might look for another designer to deliver better figures.

A spokesperson for YSL denied any rift between the designer and the label, commenting that he did not appear at the gala as “He was busy with current work on the collection as well as the advertising campaign.“

I can understand that fashion is business, and if the dollars aren’t rolling in then the big wigs have to take drastic measures. But I really hope this is one of those rumors with little foundation. I love the work Pilati has done at Yves Saint Laurent, and I’d hate to see him leave!

Serpui Marie delivers a pint sized dose of personality with this Clementine Bag.

There’s something so striking about the combination of deep green suede and glossy black patent stripes. It’s not a color combination we often see, and I’m glad Serpui Marie took a risk.

It’s built like a satchel, but this is actually a teeny tiny purse. It’ll have room for the essentials you need on quick trips like cash and keys, but if you’re stopping out for longer than a few hours you may struggle for space.

A bag this small doesn’t really warrant a cross-body strap, as it’s light enough to easily sling over one shoulder, but I never mind a few carrying options. That strap is actually detachable so you can convert the Clementine into a clutch without too much fuss.

The $250 retail value seems a little steep considering that we don’t get a lot of bag for our dollar, but the high quality materials used help to justify the slightly exorbitant price.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs line is usually ahead of the trends. But it also sometimes combines trends in a way that makes them palatable to a wide audience. The Pearlie is a perfect example of this.

The Pearlie combines the current trend of classic quilted leather bags with a pared down, minimal aesthetic. The shape of the bag is so simple that it seems almost boring. Honestly, it doesn’t really knock my socks off, but I appreciate its subtle charm, especially when you look close at the hexagonal quilting. The Pearlie looks simple, but there is a lot of detail behind it.

The off-white color makes it perfect for spring and summer styles, but I’m not sure how practical it is in the long run. I love a good beat up white leather bag, but the classic/minimal look of this bag doesn’t really lend itself well to wear and tear. In a few months I imagine that, instead of looking broken in, it will just look worn out.

The plus side is the price. At $250, you can use this bag for spring and summer and not feel bad stowing it away for the rest of the year. But you might want to take cleaning bills into account when figuring out whether it’s a good purchase for you.
