Military style meets practicality with this modern Tribeca Tote from Tusk. I can definitely imagine New York’s hippest young things carrying this contemporary handbag!

The Tribeca’s looks are simple, but that’s exactly what I like about it. The clean design allows the gentle natural grain of the lush lambskin to take the spotlight. Such a soft skin helps to balance the edgy design, giving it just the right dose of femininity for modern bagistas.

While the appearance is impressive, it’s the Tribeca’s versatility which will make it a wardrobe staple. The shoulder straps won’t bother most girls, but I prefer mine a little longer. Thankfully Tusk also adds a longer detachable strap, which allows us to carry this tote cross-body style. You’ll appreciate it too once you stuff this sizable tote to the limit.

Lambskin purses tend to be a bit pricier than their cow cousins, so I was surprised to see this Tusk one costs just $458. It’s not exactly bargain basement, but it this bag is relatively affordable considering its soft skin, modern style, and practicality.

With its high society name, it should come as no surprise that the Vivian from Coccinelle is one classy accessory.

This shoulder bag is structured and smart, a bag of excellent breeding. Wide vertical pleats add interest to the authentic leather body, while the long tassel shows Coccinelle’s playful side. Those pleats really are the star attraction though, so it’s a shame that they get lost in the dark color choices. Deep brown and black are classics, but a paler tone would have made these accents really stand out.

The braided handles are also gorgeous, but I wonder how comfortable they’d feel on shoulders. They say beauty is pain, but I hope we won’t suffer too much when the Vivian is loaded to capacity.

Because this shoulder bag really can hold a lot. Pockets in either side wall help keep the clutter at bay, encouraging us to make the most of all that storage space. My only gripe is the lining, and it’s a minor one. The stripy blue and red print just doesn’t seem to work with the Vivian’s upper crust good looks.

At $425, this elegant and versatile shoulder bag represents great value.

CC Skye has outdone itself with this gorgeous hobo bag. It’s called the Love 82, and that’s exactly the emotion it inspires in me!

Often the slouch of a hobo makes it look slovenly, but not so here. The soft body only makes the luxury leather appear more opulent. The gentle pleats are undeniably feminine, but the classic colors ensure it doesn’t appear too girly.

The interior is almost extravagantly large, but I think it works here. There are zip and slip pockets to take care of gadgets and valuables, and a clip to keep your keys within easy reach. The pale lining isn’t the most practical – I expect it to show pen stains and make-up marks before long – but I’m willing to forgive CC Skye this little misstep.

I prefer the Love 82 in matte colors, whether traditionally textured as it is here or embossed in an exotic pattern. The black and white snake print simply looks too busy; the pleats become lost in the mottled scales and it’s a great shame. Keep it simple and you’ll shine carrying this luxury hobo.

Tianni has added another beautiful pattern to its range of stunning traditional totes with this lovely floral pattern.

This tote has the most traditional shape. Long simple nude handles coordinate with little touches of trimming, and a stylish clasp. Then all you have is a spacious and functional body, where the beautiful floral print is left to speak for itself. A riot of summer and spring colors, this is the perfect complement to the warm weather soon to arrive.

Of course, for $50 you won’t get a classy leather exterior to match the traditional tote shape. However, I actually prefer the fact that the bag is made of canvas, as its much more appropriate for beach-wear and other such summer frolics. And, of course, the absence of leather makes this Tianni handbag much more affordable!

Classic, pretty and floral, this is one of my favorite totes on the market.

The Aldo Taormini clutch is a  dramatic and eye-catching way to spend $14.

Yes, you heard me right. $14. Or $13.98, to be precise. That plonks this ruffled purse neatly into the realm of incredibly affordable, and means that even if you only get to use it a few times you have still got a bargain! The dramatic gold edged ruffles will mean that you are likely to only be able to use this in an evening environment, but that is more than OK for the price.

Whilst the golden waves aren’t as refined as you would see in an expensive designer piece, from a distance they will look quite smart, especially in combination with a simple black dress and gold accessories. I would prefer a less slouchy shape, but at least the soft fabric exterior works with the loose ruffles.

This dramatic Aldo evening bag is probably of of the cheapest structured handbags on the market.

The folks at new eco-friendly shopping portal Mission Savvy believe that fashion really can change the world. Launched this month, the online boutique features an eclectic range of fashion items created by environmentally conscious designers.

The items are grouped into five collections, each with a different social issue attached. A portion of the profits from each line benefit a related charity.

The casually feminine Dream collection supports the Performing Animal Welfare Society in its work liberating chained animals from circuses. The minimalist Compassion range works with the Jakarta Animal Aid Network to protect animal from abuse, neglect, trade, and exploitation. Proceeds from the modern Freedom range go to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to support its work in eradicating cruel animal testing procedures in the fields of medicine and science. The boho-inspired Instinct line gives to Defenders of Wildlife and Wild Care Cape Cod. Both organizations are committed to protecting wildlife in their native surrounds. The gym-ready Voice line helps rescue and protect animals from inhumane farming practices, with proceeds benefiting Farm Sanctuary.

There aren’t a lot of bags available at present, but it’s early days. I’m looking forward to watching this innovative shopping website grow in the future.

Ecoist is definitely a brand which believes in the old adage that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The label’s latest eco-friendly range of purses is made from used chip packets!

The Recycled Frito-Lay range features handbags carefully crafted from old Doritos, SunChips, and Cheetos wrappers. Each package has been woven and sewn together by Peruvian manufacturers according to Fair Trade practices. I love the way the colorful packet designs are used to create bold, abstract prints. You’d almost never guess these bags lived former lives as chip packets!

The limited edition line features some of Ecoist’s most popular handbag shapes including shoulder bags, coin purses, pochettes, and baguettes. The collection also includes bracelets, placemats, and some cheeky chip bowls!

In keeping with its commitment to sustainability, Ecoist will plant a tree for every bag sold, including the new limited edition Frito-Lay purses. The Frito-Lay handbags are available from $22 from the Ecoist website.

The Stud Muffin! The brilliant name alone has me loving this Roxy handbag!

After the name, it is the versatility of this convertible handbag that is the most impressive feature. At first glance, it looks like a normal wristlet: quite large, but with an optional wrist strap to help you carry it. Then you realise that it also comes with a very long chain strap, which converts this clutch bag into a useful cross-body, and keeps both your hands free. Alternatively there is even a third option, with a shoulder strap making this into a traditional handbag. Very impressive indeed!

We definitely can’t complain about the usability of this Roxy purse, or the name. So how about the looks? Personally, I like them. The silver studs are a nice feature, but not over-the-top, and the quilt-styled white stitching adds another layer of texture. Some people may find the bright white a little impractical, as you have to avoid staining it, but it does look clean.  For now!

This very affordable Roxy wristlet (Clutch?! Cross-body?! Shoulder bag?!) breaks away from the label’s normal surfer vibe, and I think it works!

While the Northern Hemisphere is anticipating summer down south in New Zealand they’re beginning to rug up. To celebrate the new season, Wellington label Konev Leather will release a limited edition winter line.

The In The Pond range was inspired by the beauty of gardens in Versailles and France. Each bag was cleverly designed to sit comfortably at the waistline and flatter most figures.

“With handbags this is really important. What a lot of people do is choose an oversized handbag, which makes you as wide as the handbag. Or an undersized handbag, which just looks wanting on the body. It looks proportionately wrong,” explained designer Samantha Hannah.

“I researched the general shape that New Zealanders are, which is either round or big on the bottom and smaller on the top. The shape suits those body shapes and as the leather ages and softens it becomes slouchier, which suits curves, yet its rectangle design also suits a tall slim person. It’s still got structure.“

The In The Pond collection features satchels, handbags, and wallets made from colored cowhide and strangely enough, fish skin! That’s taking the pond theme to extremes!

The satchels are large enough to suit a laptop, and each one is lined in vibrant red fabric for “energy and passion.”
