While the rest of the world is worrying about the health and environmental fallout from the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the folks are Salvatore Ferragamo are concerned about their sales.

The luxury label’s chief executive officer Michele Norsa says sales of their handbags and ties at duty free stores are suffering as airports across Europe are shut.

“I’m beginning to worry because it’s an important week. People are being sent away and therefore aren’t entering the stores,” she complains.

The important week she refers to is Golden Week, a Japanese public holiday which typically attracts many traveling tourists. I’m sure the brand will take a hit as a result of these lost sales, but let’s put it in perspective.

Salvatore Ferragamo has around 130 duty free stores around the world, which account for 11% of its total annual sales. Hardly enough to cause the business major damage, unlike the air carriers losing billions of dollars each day. To say nothing of the passengers who may find themselves out of pocket if travel insurance firms manage to invoke the act of God clause.

All Salvatore Ferragamo has done with this PR bungle is appear self absorbed. So many people are doing it tough following the volcano’s eruption after all.

New handbag collection olivia + joy, the latest from Accessory Exchange, has made its exclusive debut at Macy’s stores. The bags will be rolled out into other major retailers later this year.

The olivia + joy bags were developed with the aim to “inject some excitement back into the handbag department,” according to Accessory Exchange president Abe Dweck.

The purses are trend focused rather than classic. Look for stud and chain accents catering for rocker chicks and ruffles and bows for the girly girls. They’re crafted from man-made leather-like materials in a range of colors, from statement making black and white to pretty muted pastels for spring. Olivia + joy puts new twists on classic shapes, such as the mini bag which converts to a clutch when straps are removed.

Olivia + joy bags are affordably priced at $48 to $98. Accessory Exchange hopes to expand the accessories range, with plans to add belts and leg wear to the collection by the end of the year.

I’m always saying that I’m not a big fan of Jimmy Choo, but this season’s line is really making me change my mind. It’s replete with fabulous ponyskin clutches like this one that combine his sophisticated aesthetic with a decidedly bohemian flare.

I’m not even really a fan of boho chic, but this clutch goes beyond that. It has a primitive look that is refreshing. That’s not to say that the materials or craftsmanship are anything less than you would expect from designer digs, because they aren’t. It’s just that Choo seems to be working within a new, less glossy paradigm that I really love.

The half-moon shape of this bag is great for a lot of reasons. Firstly, because the flat end will fit neatly in your palm, and secondly because it really draws attention to the laced edges and mimics the leopard spots on the ponyskin.

The combination of colors and textures is what makes this bag so extraordinary, though. The smooth leather laces give a piece-y texture to the edges of the bag, which contrasts with the voluptuous shape and coarse fur of the ponyskin. The single line of lime green lacing is a stroke of genius that ties the whole thing together.

The only thing wrong with the Damian clutch, as far as I can tell, is that I can’t afford it. At $1,895, it’s a boho bag at a Park Avenue price.

We all remember the amazing Alexander Wang Coco duffel from last year. Well, this H2W bowler may well be the affordable alternative that we have all be waiting for.

OK, so the Domino bowler isn’t exactly the same as its inspiration. The large studs aren’t just located to the base; instead, they clamber all over the synthetic leather body. But other than that we have a bag here that definitely shares a few similarities in shape and rocker design with the iconic Coco.

Some die-hard fashionistas may well argue that studs are over. They are soo last year. However, I think the black leather and studs look works brilliantly with this spring’s love of chiffon and lace, creating a great contrast between the soft and the hard.

Thankfully this H2W is more than acceptable as a purse that doesn’t get used all that often, or which only suits one season’s trends. After all it only costs $34.99, as opposed to the $850 Alexander Wang was charging for his. For that price difference I would be happy to have much less than this functional and funky bag actually offers!

Although it is synthetic and thus not as luxurious, I think this H2W Duffel is definitely an option worth considering!

Oryany Handbags takes a real risk with its Wendy-Ayelen Double-Face Tote. No shrinking violet, this bold bag is covered in thousands of colored sequins.

The Wendy-Ayelen is a glitzy number to be sure, but the rich tones and elegant pattern ensure it doesn’t look gaudy. On such a large canvas, this glittering print seems like a work of art. While I love the finish, I’m not as convinced by Oryany’s execution.

I always love a few carrying options, but I’m not convinced by Oryany’s choices here. Large totes are never practical to carry by hand, so the two short handles seem a little useless. The chain strap is longer and more convenient, but when it’s not in use it flaps about aimlessly. And when you are using the metal straps, prepare for some pain! Coordinating leather would have been a much more practical choice.

The interior sees Oryany return to form though. The enormous dimensions are backed up by several leather trimmed pockets. There’s also a wristlet in the same gorgeous sequined fabric. You could carry this inside the tote as a convenient coin purse, or wear it separately when you’re out on the town.

J. Tiras channels all the style of Judith Leiber with this crystal-covered Dottie purse.

Just like a Judith Leiber original, every inch of this gem covered barrel clutch sparkles. It’s also got a healthy sense of humor with whimsical spots all over. Choose from playful pink spots on the jet black Dottie, or this glamorous combination of topaz and pearl.

The interior is tiny, but the leathery lining helps make this space feel a little more luxurious. It’s essentials only though, in the strictest sense of the word, as very few things will fit inside. Thankfully the metal chain is detachable, so it need not take up any room inside the already small space!

The biggest sticking point for J. Tiras fans is likely to be the price. When most of the label’s bags cost $100 or less, the Dottie’s $480 tag is that much harder to swallow. Still, it seems a steal when compared to the four-figure sums Judith Leiber charges for similar purses!
