Marc by Marc Jacobs dominates the young hipster demographic with his edgy, irreverent designs, and this studded derby bag is no exception. It’s sure to spawn knockoffs from Macy’s to Target and everywhere in between.

The genius of this little bag is that is combines badass rocker details with a petite, demure shape. The balance is uncanny. Nothing says rockstar more than black leather, especially if it’s covered in silver studs. And because of its small size, it won’t get in the way of your nightlife, either.

The long strap ensures that you can wear it either over your shoulder or slung across your body, which makes it dancefloor perfect. But this bag is for more than just nights on the town. I can see a more conservative girl using it to add a little punk edge to her everyday wardrobe without overwhelming her usual style.

At $300, a lot of people are going to find the versatility of this bag irresistible, and provided that my credit limit holds, I will be one of them.

As far as I’m concerned, Marc Jacobs is to America what Coco Chanel was to Paris: the designer that epitomizes that nation’s style. But, like the French, sometimes we Americans aren’t always on point. I think this bag is a good example of American boho style gone awry.

The basics of this bag are solid. I love the simple shape, the rich brown leather, and the utilitarian-styled straps. The additional red leather straps are a unique and interesting touch, as well. But the metallic fringe is killing me. It looks like a really ugly chandelier exploded on the front of this bag.

If the fringe wasn’t metallic, it might save the whole bag. As it is, though, the whole thing looks slapped together shoddily. Actually, if you took off the red straps, it might detract somewhat from the ugliness of the fringe, but as it is it looks like a big red frame around the worst part of the bag.

The other worst part of the bag is the price. At $1,750, I just can’t see this baby flying off the shelves.

OK, so I am going to hold my hands up and admit that maybe this $24 bargain isn’t the most stylish bag on the market. There are, after all, plenty of other far more expensive bags that manage to take recycling to whole new levels. However, there is a certain slouchy and relaxed charm about this sling purse. It is summery, and light, and bound to be comfy to carry. It also oozes a boho hippie vibe that makes it very Earth Day appropriate.

With a great back story and eco-friendly fabrics, this fully lined shoulder bag is just the ticket for abating your technology-driven eco-guilt!

Given its name you might imagine this Serpui Marie Anaconda clutch is made from the exotic skin of snake, but instead we find glossy woven patent leather.

It’s not really serpentine, but there is something vaguely reptilian about the polished black leather. It’s accented by thin stripes of contrasting metallic leather, which are woven backwards and forwards to create a modern plaid pattern. It ups the glitz factor, giving it the style we need to rock this purse during the day or night.

If you do want to use this clutch in daylight hours, I hope you don’t need to carry a lot. It’s really a tiny purse, one that’s smaller than I’d prefer at any time honestly. On the plus side that does make it easy to carry, a real advantage considering it doesn’t come with a shoulder strap.

However it does make me question whether it’s worth the price. The $260 retail value is hefty for any clutch, but especially so when we get such little bag for our dollar.

Coach’s decision to slash handbag prices has paid off. The brand has posted a 37% profit increase for the first quarter of the year.

Some might have seen Coach’s strategy to cut handbag prices by 12% and price more purses under the $300 mark as a risky one. However, it seems the bargain bags helped to lure shoppers into Coach boutiques. In fact, handbag sales account for 59% of Coach’s American first-quarter sales, up from 54% in the same period last year.

Analysts say these results are a sign that affluent shoppers are in the mood to spend following the global recession.

While shoppers have enjoyed more affordable prices from Coach in the recent past, they may not last for much longer. Mike Tucci, the president of Coach’s North American retail division, hinted that prices could rise as the brand develops its product line. He says Coach is “really targeting that core … sweet spot” between $298 and $358. It’s not exactly exorbitant, but not bargain basement either.

Only time will tell whether this shift will benefit Coach, or whether customers will turn their nose up at the higher prices.

Coach Handbags on eBay

I might expect to find this Menbur Lace Bow Clutch in Madonna’s wardrobe. It’s exactly the kind of purse I can imagine the pop star carrying in her younger days. Thanks to the recent ’80s revival though, this comes off looking like a trendy clutch rather than a purse caught in a time warp.

The pale satin body is covered in contrasting black lace for a dramatic retro look. I’m less convinced by the “bow,” a messy lace accent hanging underneath a faceted gemstone, but the modern interpretation is bound to appeal to those who like to take a risk. It does provide an interesting alternative to the big ribbony bows we usually see.

While the satin must play second fiddle to the lace outside, inside it’s the star attraction. This framed interior is on the small side, but this soft lining makes the space feel a little more luxurious. I wish Menbur had thought to make its chain strap detachable though. While the hands-free carrying option is convenient, it will clutter the interior once it’s tucked away.

I’m not sure everything about this Menbur purse works, but there’s enough to admire here to justify its $94 price tag.

Folks seem to be deserting Ungaro faster than rats from a sinking ship. In the last six months we’ve already seen Lindsay Lohan lose her artistic director post and Mounir Moufarrige step down as chief executive officer. Now we can add creative director Estrella Archs to the list.

The designer, who worked for Ungaro for just two seasons, has cited “irreconcilable differences related to the creative direction of the brand.“

But don’t think this is the last we’ll see of Estrella. She will continue to develop the brand she established in 2007. We’ll see her latest collection at the Paris Fashion Week.

As for her replacement, early rumors suggest that Giles Deacon may get the job. How long he’ll stay if he does accept the position is anybody’s guess! The French fashion house has gone through four creative directors in the last five years after all!

The metallic bow wristlet looks like a glamourpuss, but she comes at a bargain basement price. You can have her on your arm for just $30.

The Leaves and Straw clutch isn’t by any means Magid’s first venture into the world of woven handbags and straw based creations. In fact, they are very accomplished at making attractive straw purses that combine summery vibes with stylish design. This probably explains why this patterned clutch manages to be quite so cheap at the same time as looking quite so smart.

This casual purse leaves winter at the door from the first time you see it. Although the colors are somewhat autumnal. with the range of reds and browns and greens, the very material just begs to be taken to the beach or to picnics in the park. In much the same way, this wouldn’t look right with a winter coat, and needs instead to be worn with frayed denim shorts or a boho maxi dress.

Thankfully the practicality of this Magid purse isn’t left behind with winter. In fact, considering that you pay only $25 for it, you get a lot of extra touches such as a handle, lining and a functional trim. Of course it may still break easily (straw handbags notoriously need a lot of TLC), but this is definitely a summer staple.
